Ben Currie Making His Mark As A Trainer

Young trainer Ben Currie's plan to break into Brisbane's top 10 trainers is off to a flying start thanks to some astute cheap buys.

Toowoomba-based Currie has had seven winners already in the new season and three of those have been in the metropolitan area.

Handy gelding Gully Command scored at Doomben on Saturday and Currie said there was more to come.

"Gully Command cost us just $3000 and he has now won over $100,000. He should have won his previous two starts and deserved some luck," Currie said.

Currie used travel to season Gully Command who has raced at such far-flung tracks as Goondiwindi, Dalby and the Sunshine Coast.

Gully Command is likely to tackle another city race over 1600m in a fortnight.

Currie was also in the winners' circle with Great Game at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and the former Patinack mare Grey Countess won at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

"Great Game and Grey Countess weren't overly expensive so things are going OK," Currie said.

The 24-year-old followed a family tradition when he won the Toowoomba trainers premiership last season.

"That has been my plan all along to concentrate on winning the Toowoomba title and then attempt to push into the top trainers on the Brisbane premiership," Currie said.

"It is obviously a long term plan but we will be having more runners in town from now on."

Currie, who is from one of Queensland's most famous racing families, studied journalism but has put that career on hold.

His grandfather is Toowoomba trainer Paul Nolan snr, while his uncles Michael Nolan and Paul Nolan jnr have been successful trainers over the past two decades.

Currie's father Mark helps Ben with his team which has grown to 45 horses.
