Waterhouse Trains One-two In Premier's Cup

Gai Waterhouse will build on a stable quinella in the Premier's Cup by sending the winner Greatwood and second-placed Bonfire in different Group One directions.
Greatwood ($5.50) led all the way to beat Bonfire ($5) by 1-3/4 lengths in Saturday's 1800-metre race at Rosehill but it is the runner-up who may take the biggest step.
"Bonfire is likely to go to Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup while Greatwood will stay in Sydney for the Metropolitan," Waterhouse said.
Stable jockey Tommy Berry had the choice between the two and opted for Greatwood but said it was a case of horses for courses.
"I thought Greatwood was the best suited in this race," Berry said.
"Bonfire us a very nice horse and they will go their separate ways now.
"Greatwood is very promising but probably a bit more like The Offer.
"He will be better again in the autumn and improve to the spring next year."
The Offer, who is the early favourite for the Melbourne Cup, won three stakes races in the autumn, including the Sydney Cup.
All three Waterhouse stayers have been imported from Europe as is the current trend.
"Why wouldn't you buy them there," she said.
"The first nine home in the Melbourne Cup last year were imported horses.
"You have to be in it to win it."
Waterhouse was in it last year, with Fiorente giving her a first Melbourne Cup win.
