Excitement Builds in Singapore with Friday Feature Meet
- Wednesday, 05 March 2003 00:00
Come Friday, 7 March, racegoers will be treated to an exciting evening at the Singapore Racecourse as top thoroughbreds compete for the $1million International Group 3 Singapore Classic and the $350,000 Singapore Group 1 Lion City Cup. The first race that evening will commence at 6.15pm.
During the evening, former President of the Republic of Singapore, Dr Wee Kim Wee, who is also Patron of Singapore Turf Club, will be the Guest-of-Honour and will be presenting prizes to the winning connections of both feature races as well as donation cheques to 15 charities totalling $150,000 on behalf of the Club and Singapore Pools (Private) Limited. The list of charities is at Annex A.
Singapore Classic
A field of 14 runners, comprising overseas entries from Malaysia and Hong Kong and 11 local contenders, spearheaded by Horse of the Year 2002 SMART BET, will be vying for the coveted trophy. Please refer to the Club's release dated 21 February for details.
The Classic will be televised 'live' over SuperSports Channel 22 from 8.30pm that evening.
Lion City Cup
The Lion City Cup, with 12 top sprinters entered, is the first leg of the Singapore Sprint Series. The other two legs are the Fischer Stakes on the 2 May 2003 and the Singapore Airlines International KrisFlyer Sprint on 17 May 2003. The owner of the horse who wins all three legs of the series will receive a $150,000 bonus. The horse who wins any two legs in the same year, will earn for his owner $50,000.
Trainer Charles Leck is gunning for his fourth Lion City Cup with an armada of five.
Leading his quintet is veteran multiple-feature race winner PACIFIC PRINCE, who despite his age, has shown that he is no pushover. Leck is also represented by the exciting youngster NINETYFIVE EMPEROR who has won six races in a row. Completing Lecks strong hand in the field is BON AMIE, YORICK and the consistent ANGEL OF HARMONY.
Champion trainer Malcolm Thwaites is hoping that STORM RACER will add the Lion City Cup to his win in the EW Barker Memorial Trophy while trainer Patrick Shaw will be banking on Silver Plate and MRA Cup winner QUE EXPRESION to carry his stables flag.
In the history of the Lion City Cup, BLUE STAR, ADDED ADVANTAGE II, JINGLE BELL IV, FISCHER and SUPERB EFFECT have each won the Lion City Cup twice. Last years Cup was won by CLASSIC MARCO who is not entered this year.
"Guess the Singapore Classic 2003 Winner" Contest
Racegoers stand a chance to win fabulous cash prizes in the "Guess The Singapore Classic 2003 Winner" Contest. To participate, they must present a betting coupon with a minimum amount of $50 to redeem for a contest form and drop their entries into the respective boxes representing the participating horses in the Singapore Classic at any of the four contest booths located around the Racecourse. The prizes are:
1st prize : $1,888
2nd prize : $ 888
3rd prize : $ 388

Additional entertainment that evening will be provided by the Singapore Police Force Marching Band.

McEvoy to Stay in Dubai for World Cup
- Tuesday, 04 March 2003 00:00
McEvoy is experiencing a riding spell in Dubai after winning the jockey's prize of two business class tickets to Dubai at last September's Melbourne Racing Club Dubai Racing Club Cup Day. McEvoy rode four winners on the day to win the trip.
The 21 year-old top jockey has already ridden two winners during his stay in Dubai and he rides trackwork for the Godolphin team five mornings a week.
McEvoy thinks that the Godolphin team will be in Victoria earlier this spring than previously to prepare for their campaign of winning the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

Northerly and Grandera Set to Clash in Singapore
- Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:00
A total of 194 entries from 17 different countries were received at the first nomination stage for the International Group One Singapore Airlines International Cup and the International Group Three Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Sprint.
Heading the entries are defending world champion, GRANDERA and Australia’s Champion NORTHERLY. These two great horses met in the WS Cox Plate last year with NORTHERLY coming out the better. GRANDERA will be looking to avenge that defeat as well as defending his Singapore Airlines International Cup crown on 17 May 2003.
However, both may have to overcome top class Japanese horses EISHIN PRESTON and AGNES DIGITAL who have shown that they can perform well outside Japan by winning Group One contests in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is well represented by Hong Kong Cup winner PRECISION and OLYMPIC EXPRESS who took out the Hong Kong Mile in a remarkable Hong Kong International Raceday last December.
Heading the entries for the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Sprint are defending champion NORTH BOY and Hong Kong Sprint winner ALL THRILLS TOO.
The Tony McEvoy trained NORTH BOY, showed that he is back to his best by finishing second in the Oakleigh Plate (Group 1) at Caulfield recently when coming into the straight in a hopeless position.

Hayes and Size Score Sha Tin Doubles
- Saturday, 01 March 2003 00:00
Size grabbed an early double when Ahead a Head (All Fired Up-Brookfields) and Ace Academy (Royal Academy-Aussie Consul) won consecutive races early on the ten event card.
Hayes matched Size's efforts thanks to wins from For Your Eyes Only (Celtic Swing-Comedy Cafe) and Equator Kid (Kenvain-Kadidja).
The latter is the former brilliant Perth galloper Lord Mason, and he won a HK$1.6 million (approx AU$420,000) Class One event.
Former Collingrove shuttler Marju, a son of the international siring success Last Tycoon, took siring honours with a double. Sounds Better (ex Liege) and Northern Gold Ball (ex Soviet Maid) both got the chocolates.
Among the other sires to get winners were the champions Danehill and Zabeel and the young shuttler Foxhound.
Kerrin Wins Group Race in Dubai
- Sunday, 09 March 2003 00:00
McEvoy was at his very best guiding home the out of form Conroy to back to back wins in the Mahab Al Shimaal for Mohammed Al Jamali.
On the line Conroy had a neck advantage over Conflict, while Persuasivo Fitz was a further length back in third place.
Meanwhile, champion galloper Grandera showed he could be on track for a tilt at the Dubai World Cup with a narrow win in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd III over 2000 metres.
With Frankie Dettori in the saddle for his fourth winner of the night, Grandera proved a half length too good for Grumblefoot in a performance which could have been impressive.
Grumblefoot probably would have finished closer had he not been interfered with by State Shinto, who attempted to savage the eventual runner-up.
Wong Elected Chairman of Asian Racing Federation
- Saturday, 01 March 2003 00:00
Mr Wong is now at the helm of an organisation with three seats on the Executive Council of International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.
Mr Bob Charley, Chairman of the Australian Racing Board, was elected Vice-Chairman of the ARF, along with Mr Naoki Koike, who will become the head of the Japan Racing Association later this month.
This is most prominent position that Hong Kong has ever held in international racing. The ARF comprises 20 controlling bodies of horseracing stretching from Hong Kong to Turkey, and Australia to South Africa.
Accepting his new position, Mr Wong said: "I am very honoured to take on a role of great importance to our Federation, and also as I am following in the footsteps of Murray Acklin, a great leader from New Zealand who helped grant this body a much louder voice in world horseracing. Our sport owes him a debt of thanks."
He added: "No doubt racing will deal with important issues over the coming years, but surely none will be as pressing as the threat posed to the racing's very fabric by unlimited, unregulated and uncontrolled betting companies that contribute nothing to our sport, and nothing to society.
"Together racing's governing bodies must take immediate and firm action against these offshore operators. I urge ARF members not just to take a united front against these parasitical and illegal pirates that threaten racing's integrity, but also to lobby their respective governments to help arrest this problem," Mr Wong said.
All 20 nations unanimously adopted in principle the Good Neighbour Policy which says no organisation will accept bets from residents in the other jurisdiction and neither will solicit, market or advertise wagering without prior authorisation from the other jurisdiction.
ARF nations contribute 66% of total betting turnover globally, race for 53% of the world's racing stakes, and feature almost 40% of the world's racing population.
Its member countries are Australia, Bahrain, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

· An increase in the number of foals from 915 (2002) to 1015 (2006).
· Increasing the number of off-course betting centers from 28 (2003) to 48 (2006).
Betting figures being returned in Korea are huge judging by figures presented to todays Conference by Yang-Tae.
The average number of people attending race-meetings either on-course or at one of the 28 off-course betting centers on a given day is 200,000 and each of these patrons are wagering an average of $US 400 per person a day.
Park Yang-Tae said the racecourses in Korea had been developed as a family park not merely a place for betting for adults. We have developed the inside of the racetrack into a family park which includes childrens playground, promenades, soccer fields and horse-back riding. Racing fan days offer free admission and drinks to patrons.
We have made efforts to enlarge the racing fan base and diversify betting methods. Focusing on younger generations and family fans has been an important commitment, he said.
A number of customer-orientated facilities at the racecourses have been developed such as a parking lot, straight walk-way with roof and a nursery room.
Yang-Tae said there were further opportunities for racing to develop given the growing leisure and gambling market in Korea and the introduction of a five-day working week (introduced in July this year).
