Broken Down Brew Retired

Brew and O'Malleys Boy, flag-bearers on either side of the Tasman for Ballymore Stables, have both run their last race.

Melbourne Cup winner Brew, on the comeback trail after being put aside with ligament problems 18 months ago, has been forced into retirement with a sesamoid fracture. O'Malleys Boy, one of New Zealand's equine characters, has suffered a tendon tear.

Brew was scratchy after running in the Craiglee Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, but had his connections guessing when his previously troublesome ligaments appeared free of any problems.

X-rays taken today at the Flemington stable of trainer Mike Moroney revealed the beginnings of a foreleg sesamoid fracture, spelling the end of his career.

"We had said all along if there were any doubts, we would pull the pin," part-owner Paul Moroney told ThoroughbredNews tonight.

"We feel relieved that we picked up a potentially major problem early and are able to give him an honourable retirement."

Likewise, O'Malleys Boy goes into retirement nursing a tendon injury that is not life-threatening and thus allows him a worthwhile life away from the track.

The little bay, like Brew an eight-year-old, proved a real character in a career that produced 11 wins from 54 starts.

"We'll really miss the daily routine with Biggles," said part-owner Judy Moss, using the nickname that has become synonymous with one of New Zealand's best liked racehorses.
