New Weekly Feature - The Black Book

It was a big weekend of racing right around the country with Sydney holding a great Saturday of action, while yesterday the focus was centred on Caulfield's cracking dual Group One raceday.

Today we launch a new weekly updated section called the Black Book.

We attempt to find coming winners and try to pick the big race winners in advance.

Also posted each Monday will be the Sack Book - horses which have disappointed, lost their place in the black book or generally not capable of featuring in some of the feature events this spring.

THE BLACK BOOK

Rosehill - Saturday

Race 1
RIVER TO ME - Should be winning soon.

Race 2
VICTORY VEIN - Unbeatable in Flight Stakes - then watch out Melbourne!
QUIET AS - Given a huge task at second start. Hopefully it hasn't dented her confidence. Coming black type winner.

Race 3
INTO THE NIGHT - Looks set to win again.
JUST DEVINE - Capable of surprising soon. Not hopeless in stakes races.

Race 4
CHUCKLE - Wins in another two strides. Great run. Seems to have developed nicely in its break.

Race 5
PLATINUM SCISSORS - Didn't know what to do when sent to the front on Saturday. Will bounce back soon.
MASKERADO - Connections have a big wrap on him. Derby bound in Melbourne. If he can run straight he will win plenty of good races in the future.

Race 6
DRESS CIRCLE - The Metrop looks his again. No whip - no worries!
FREEMASON - Caught the eye making good ground late.

Race 7
CRAWL - Gordo took all of the attention of the Hawkes runners, but this fellow was clearly the run of the stable.
HOEBERG - Getting fitter - settling into her new home well. Quality mare when right.

Race 8
DUEL FUEL - Capable Queenslander who ran well. Made handy late ground. Looks set to win in the Harbour city.

Sandown - Saturday

Race 1
SUPREME HEIGHTS - Will improve from first jumps start. Has plenty of flat ability.

Race 2
THE MIGHTY LIONS - Should be at peak fitness next start. Capable when right.

Race 3
DISCO HIPS - Will develop into a nice type with time. Should have finished closer. Was impressive on debut - form out of race looks handy.
MAGIC BIRD - Already a stakes winner. Will be fitter for this run and if placed correctly can win again soon.

Race 4
HOMECOMING QUEEN - Great debut effort. Still has a few things to learn and when she does watch out!

Race 5
PAESTUM - Consistent performer who will always give you a good honest run.

Race 6
ROCK OF THE AGES - Looks like he is not far from finally breaking that frustrating run of second placings.

Race 7
YORUBA - Hit the line strongly. Stable has a bit of an opinion of him. Capable of making it back to back wins.

Race 8
PAST THE SKIES - Just grabbed right on the line. Is already a city winner and should not be far from doing likewise again.

Caulfield - Sunday

Race 1
VENUS WAS HER NAME - She's Got It! Impressive win. Will win a stakes race this preparation.
VISAGE - Found the line well. Set to feature in better races.

Race 2
CALMING - Proven dual stakes winner who caught the eye with another strong effort. Stable going well.
COSMIC STRIKE - Can strike at her next run. Stakes winner in handy quality in Adelaide. Runs well while fresh.

Race 3
LASHED - Jumped away with them and made up plenty of good late ground in the centre of the track. Stable keen on her for Thousand Guineas and Oaks.
MACEDON LADY - Gave John Symons plenty to smile about. Looks an ideal Oaks proposition.

Race 4
HELENUS - Lightly raced three-year-old who again made up good ground at long odds. Should be further suited over longer distances.

Race 5
BEL ESPRIT - Plenty to like about his gutsy effort. Back to the three-year-olds for the Guineas. Oliver and Symons are confident he will get 1600 metres - and that will do me!
FRITZ - Was a top class performer in New Zealand early on and he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Made rapid late ground in the centre of the field. Capable of running a big race at huge odds again soon.
WEASEL WILL - Made up strong late ground on the outside and is working up to another good win this preparation.
USTINOV - Already proven big race winner who made up some ground without being punished too hard.

Race 6
NORTHERLY - What can you say?!?! This bloke should have been the Horse of the Year last season (he got my vote) and he is now probably the most popular horse in Melbourne (and Perth of course). Big weight - no worries - bring on the Caulfield Cup and whatever else.
MAGICAL MISS - Got beaten by a champion. Likely Cox Plate contender before she attempts to emulate Saintly and give Bart another Cup.
TULLY THUNDER - Looks a Caulfield Cup chance. Quality Group One winning mare.

Race 7
PENTASTIC - Strong win after coming from well back. Capable of featuring in better races.
BIG PAT - Stuck on well after covering plenty of extra ground. Flukey Cup hope.

Race 8
LETHAL LEIGH - Found the line strongly. Will get further and he looks set to become a black type performer very soon.
BEREZNY - Probably the run of the race. Adelaide stakes winner who looks close to his best again.
