Victorian Jockey in Drugs Controversy

r4lisairwin.jpg (8946 bytes)Victorian jockey Lisa Irwin will be forced to front an inquiry by stewards after a urine sample shock at the Hamilton races yesterday.

Irwin was one of two jockeys, cross country hoop Paul Daniels was the other, to be asked to provide a urine sample at yesterday's meeting, but what should have been a simple exercise has turned into a saga.

Stewards "had concerns with the urine sample provided" by Irwin and they then requested she provide another sample.

However, Irwin failed to supply stewards with the second sample when required.

The first sample, which stewards have their "concerns" on, has been sent to the Racing Analytical Services Laboratory for analysis.

A stewards spokesman said any sample takes "a few days" to be screened and the results will be passed on to officials.

Prior to directing Irwin to give the second sample evidence was taken from the Racecourse Detective and the Club Sauna Supervisor as well as the rider.

An inquiry into the reason why the hoop failed "to produce a urine sample subsequent to the stewards directing her to do so" will be held when the results of the first sample are returned.
