RACE 1 : BRECKNOCK INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP - 1050 metres

PHYLL THE FLYER (J. Bowditch) was slow to jump.

I AM THE MAN (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly.

AL ZIMER (J. Maund) was inclined to rear as the gates opened and missed the start.

On jumping away ELMO’S HERO (NZ) (H. McKechnie) shifted out and brushed AMACLASE (J. Holder).

In the vicinity of the 600 metres CASH LOAN (C. Lindop) was inconvenienced when taken out marginally onto KING’S CHOICE (D. Tootell) by ELMO’S HERO (NZ) (H. McKechnie), which was inclined to lay out.

In the vicinity of the 500 metres AL ZIMER (J. Maund) raced fiercely for a short distance and was obliged to be restrained off heels.

Near the 200 metres AMACLASE (J. Holder), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in and tightened GRAND MANSION (T. Barras) onto ZASHMIR (W. Kerford). J. Holder was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

When questioned regarding his riding of AMACLASE over the concluding 70 metres, J. Holder explained that the mare had been inclined to lay in and in his opinion was not responding sufficiently to his riding. He stated that in an endeavour to have AMACLASE improve, he had elected to ride in a hands and heels fashion. He added that in his opinion, his mount’s run had ended. J. Holder was advised that his explanation was accepted, however, he was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts to the finish of a race.

RACE 2 : HAIGH’S CHOCOLATES HANDICAP - 1518 metres

EXALTED TIME (J. Maund) shifted in on jumping away and brushed LA SUPREME (S. Price).

Shortly after the start LA SUPREME (S. Price) and MR SCANDAL’US (B. Vale), which was attempting to hold its position, brushed on several occasions.

At the entrance to the straight EXALTED TIME (J. Maund) shifted out onto PALAZZO (W. Kerford), which was inconvenienced when tightened onto KELMARK (S. Cahill), which became unbalanced for a short distance.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of KELMARK, S. Cahill explained that he had elected to allow his mount to drift back after jumping in order to obtain cover and have his mount relax. He stated that in the vicinity of the 1300 metres he was obliged to race three wide with cover, however, shortly afterwards was forced to race without cover. He stated that, in his opinion, KELMARK was still inclined to be immature and not as genuine as he would like, however, considering the pace of the race he felt the gelding had raced well below his expectations. Mr. S. Gower, the trainer of KELMARK, stated the only explanation he could offer was that KELMARK may have got its tongue over the bit during running. He added that he had been disappointed the gelding had not run on. He responded that both his runners, KELMARK and CLAY MAN, had pleased him leading up to the race and he personally had found it difficult to prefer the chances of one horse above the other. Mr. Gower gave an undertaking to report to Stewards any change in KELMARK’s condition in the next seven days. KELMARK was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was sore in the off hind leg. Stewards ordered that a swab sample be taken from KELMARK.

RACE 3 : THE CHAIRMAN AT NORWOOD HANDICAP - 1100 metres

STRAIGHT BY (J. Maund) was slow to jump.

At the entrance to the straight OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa) in attempting to improve its position shifted out and hampered BELLA SIGNORINA (S. Price).

Approaching the 200 metres OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa), which was inclined to lay out under pressure, shifted out and inconvenienced BELLA SIGNORINA (S. Price). N. Tomizawa was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

N. Tomizawa reported that OUR FAME was inclined to lay out over the concluding stages.

RACE 4 : TOOP & TOOP HANDICAP - 1050 metres

ALADAR (J. Bowditch) knuckled on jumping away.

Shortly after the start ALADAR (J. Bowditch) was inconvenienced when tightened by COBAMUSE (C. Lever), which got its head up and was inclined to shift away from CHAPEL ROYAL (M. McDonald).

Inside the 500 metres ALADAR (J. Bowditch) was inclined to race keenly, improved onto heels and was obliged to steady.

J. Holder, the rider of DEFIANT, explained that he was content with his mount during running, however, when placed under pressure in the vicinity of the 200 metres it had failed to respond in the manner he had expected and inside the 200 metres, it was his opinion, it had commenced to shorten stride. He added that it was the stable’s opinion that DEFIANT had done very well leading into the race and had been expected to perform well. DEFIANT was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly to be lame in the off foreleg.

Subsequent to the race CHAPEL ROYAL was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 5 : PERKS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS HANDICAP - 1600 metres

SEA THE WAY (N. Tomizawa) shifted out on jumping away and inconvenienced KURTRAY (J.Maund).

Inside the 500 metres I KEN (J. Potter), which was showing a tendency to lay out, shifted out and tightened RUB SHOULDERS (J. Patton) onto the hindquarters of BOOGIE KNIGHT (J. Bowditch), which became severely unbalanced. J. Potter was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.

Inside the 400 metres RUB SHOULDERS (J. Patton) was obliged to check off the heels of I KEN (J. Potter), which had been taken out by RAINBOW THAI (B. Vale).

RACE 6 : BAKER YOUNG STOCKBROKERS TROPHY - 1600 metres

QUESTAMATIC (D. Tootell) missed the start.

Inside the 500 metres MOWGLII (N. Tomizawa) was obliged to steady off the heels of ELATHEA (B. Vale), which shifted out. B. Vale was advised to take greater care when shifting out in future.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow Stewards to review the official footage of the start. After considering submissions from D. Tootell, the rider of QUESTAMATIC, Mr. G. Kennewell, the trainer of the mare, and the Official Starter, Mr. L. Cromwell, Stewards ruled that QUESTAMATIC be declared a non-runner on the grounds that it had been denied a fair start.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on QUESTAMATIC be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 10 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 10 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

EVANS was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had sustained a laceration to its near fore cannon.

RACE 7 : OYSTER BAR APHRODISIAC HANDICAP - 1200 metres

SHINING PATH (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly.

Inside the 700 metres STARBUCKS (A. Stead) was inconvenienced and obliged to steady when tightened between SHINING PATH (D. Carney), which got its head up and commenced to lay out, and GRUMANS (J. Lyon), which was racing keenly and laid in.

N. Tomizawa, the rider of BISHA MON, dropped his whip approaching the finish. N. Tomizawa was reprimanded and advised that future carelessness would result in a penalty.

After the finish, SHINING PATH staggered and crashed through the running rail and collapsed. SHINING PATH was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had suffered a massive internal haemorrhage.

RACE 8 : FPD SAVILLS HANDICAP - 1200 metres

M. McDonald was questioned regarding his being unable to make the required weight to ride WYNDAM QUEST in this event. M. McDonald was advised that in similar circumstances in future Stewards would impose a penalty.

LA MOOLA (J. Holder), SAUVIGNON HILL (D. Carney) and SAPRISTI (NZ) (C. Lever) were all slow to jump.

Near the 200 metres LA MOOLA (J. Holder) shifted in onto WYNDAM QUEST (N. Tomizawa), which shifted away abruptly and hampered TOWN WATCHER (J. Patton).

GENERAL:

Mr. V. Bradley, the trainer of RENDELSHAM STAR, the winner of Race 4, was questioned regarding his use of a mobile telephone whilst leading that gelding around the mounting enclosure subsequent to the race. Mr. Bradley pleaded guilty to the charge under ARR 160A, Part 2(a) and was fined $150.

Blood Samples were taken from the following horses for the purpose of TCO2 testing:

Race 2 CLAY MAN, MR SCANDAL’US, LA SUPREME, MOOTANG, BLUEWIN and WE WILL ROCK YOU.

Race 5 GET UP, KURTRAY, RUB SHOULDERS and CENTURY HAWK.

Race 6 BORDER TIME, QUESTAMATIC, OXFORD DOLLAR, EVANS, MOWGLII and TERMINUS PRINCE.
