Missile Stakes Pair Trial Well At Rosehill

A set of barrier trials at Rosehill on Tuesday could yet prove the strongest form reference for the first Group race of the Sydney season.
The Chris Waller-trained Royal Descent and Hawkes Racing's Messene stepped out in separate trials ahead of their race returns in the Missile Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
Jockey Tommy Berry was taken by Messene's third placing to Heart Testa in his 900m heat and said he left plenty in the tank for race day.
"He trialled really well. He did it pretty much on the bit," Berry told Sydney's Sky Sports radio.
"I love the way he really quickened up in the straight without me asking him to.
"It was only a soft trial because he does race Saturday."
Messene finished second to Sweet Idea in last year's Missile Stakes and is one of 14 nominations for Saturday's renewal.
After originally entering only Weary from his stable, Waller threw in a late nomination for Royal Descent who has not raced since her Queen Elizabeth Stakes placing in April.
The mare turned in a sharp performance to take out the opening heat of Tuesday's trial session against six stablemates, including Victoria Derby winner Preferment who finished third.
Group One winners Boban, Grand Marshal, Press Statement and Melbourne Cup placegetter Who Shot Thebarman also competed at the Rosehill trials.
