As N Cumberland was late on course due to transport difficulties, A Huke was substituted as the rider of Mon Railleur. On jumping Sanjaya shifted in bumping Tanamin. Darvin Daka was slow into stride. Lanatius began awkwardly and then near the 700m ran off the track resulting in Bold Ideas being hampered, Dame Tristram being checked and Mon Railleur being taken out to the outside fence. Trainer P Atkins was advised that Lanatius must barrier trial on two occasions to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to racing again. Near the 600m Hands Free hung out crowding Tanamin out onto the heels of Sanjaya. In the straight Mon Railleur raced greenly and Tanamin hung out under pressure.

Filzao jumped awkwardly. Danabay jumped awkwardly, then raced ungenerously in the early stages getting its head up and when being steadied off the heels of Blossoms near the 1000m veered out abruptly causing Flaming Inferno to be checked. Near the 900m Blossoms got its head up and shifted out bumping Oblique out onto O’mars. Approaching the first turn Fietinski got its head up when being steadied away from Oualie which was taken in by All About Class (H Bowman) when not quite clear. H Bowman was severely reprimanded and advised that when he shifts ground to ensure he is two lengths clear. Near the 200m All About Class was steadied off the heels of Occidental when that horse shifted out under pressure.

RACE 3 – Toronto Workers Club Class 1 Handicap 1850m

A post race veterinary examination of Poetic Nijinsky did not reveal any abnormalities. A post race veterinary examination of Cotton Queen revealed the filly to be showing signs of moderate respiratory distress.

RACE 4 – Mistral International Pty Ltd Provincial 4yo & Upward Class 4 Plate 1300m

Due to the slow early pace Seatime and Red Baroness raced ungenerously in the early stages. Near the 400m Exotikos was buffeted between Magnum Lass and Real Dream (A W Robinson) which shifted in. A W Robinson was advised to exercise more care. A short distance later Exotikos had to be steadied and shifted to the outside of Real Dream to obtain clear running.

RACE 5 – Club Macquarie & B & L Herington Charity Open Cup 1300m

As apprentice D Johnston was overweight, permission was granted for J Lee to be substituted as the rider of Centra’s Gift. Apprentice Johnston was fined $100 under AR 120(b). Salim’s Tip was crowded at the start between Deranged and Speedy Punter which shifted out. Oakfield King pulled hard in the middle stages and near the 600m was continually steadied away from the heels of Bogart. Rounding the turn into the straight Oakfield King (P Losh), which was racing keenly, shifted out abruptly inconveniencing Prince Vettori. P Losh was advised to exercise more care when allowing his mounts to shift ground. Near the 200m Rebel Rock, which was tiring, shifted out slightly. King Cappo, which was racing to the outside of Rebel Rock shifted out away from that gelding inconveniencing Channon Magic and causing Deranged to be restrained away from the heels of King Cappo.

RACE 6 – Housewares International Pty Ltd Class 2 Handicap 1500m

Sir Pekan got its head up on several occasions in the early stages. When the place slowed near the 1200m Red Audi got its head up while overracing and had to be continually steadied away from the heels of Strabo until passing the 800m.

RACE 7 – Dora Creek Workers Club Class 2 Handicap 900m

Acting on veterinary advice that Touch The Plate was unfit to start the gelding was a late withdrawal at 4.34pm. Stewards subsequently directed that all monies wagered on Touch The Plate be refunded in full and made no other alteration to betting. Trainer P Ryan will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before Touch The Plate is permitted to race again. A post race veterinary examination of Majestic Son did not reveal any abnormalities. Corner Kicker bled from both nostrils and will incur the mandatory three months bar. Stewards inquired into the reasons for jockey T Phillips (A Penny) not riding his mount out over the concluding stages. T Phillips explained that after jumping awkwardly he felt his saddle snap in half with the front section of the saddle flipping back over itself resulting in the tree of the saddle sitting upside down and the points of the saddle breaking free of the tree. He said from that point he was in extreme difficulty with his saddle rolling from side to side through out the event. He said at the top of the straight when A Penny was racing truly he was able to use moderate vigour on the mare, slapping it down the shoulder with the whip. He said over the final 100 metres the mare commenced to tire and shift ground resulting in his saddle rolling significantly more than it had in the early part of the straight. He said as such he stopped riding the mare out over the concluding stages as he believed had he continued his saddle would have shifted dramatically and he was of the opinion this would have resulted in him being dislodged from A Penny. After considering T Phillips’s explanation and inspecting his saddle and their own observations of the film, stewards accepted his explanation.

Jibena and Sky Can Hurri bumped at the start. Near the 800m Piper Jo was steadied away from the heels of Charnwood Channon, struck the running rail and became unbalanced. Near the 200m Piper Jo was checked. An inquiry into the riding of Piper Jo in the straight was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
