Stewards delayed declaring correct weight to view the video of the start to ascertain whether MOOKTA’S REWARD (B Cornell) had been denied a fair start. After viewing the video Stewards deemed that MOOKTA’S REWARD had obtained a fair start. MOOKTA’S REWARD had kicked out as start effected resulting in the gelding losing considerable ground. SARATOGA BOY (M Cornell) shifted outwards as start effected and then raced erratically in the early stages of the race. Stewards questioned Jockey T HUISH in regard to the seemingly disappointing run of GEODUDE. Jockey HUISH stated that his instructions had been to endeavour to obtain some cover in the early stages of the race but the gelding over raced. And was then under pressure from the 800 metre mark and failed to run on. Trainer of GEODUDE, V OLDFIELD confirmed the instructions given to T HUISH and stated that in the horses previous runs in Darwin the horse had led and over raced and then compounded at the finish of its races. He was of the opinion that ridden more quietly the horse may have finished the race off better. Stewards noted both explanations and informed V OLDFIELD that in future when giving riders instructions that may result in a change of a horse’s normal racing pattern, he should inform Stewards prior to the race.
