Queensland country racing clubs are fearing a shake up of the state's racing industry will lead to many clubs being closed.

One country club official has lashed out at officials indicating that city racing was protected even if they operate on a loss.

Des Barrett, the president of the Bundaberg Racing Club, told ABC that dozens of tracks could "die."

"There's concern for every country track because I think the QTRB (Queensland Thoroughbred Racing Board) and the Government are not one bit interested in country racing, it's as simple as that," Barrett said.

"Doomben can loose a million dollars, there's not even a quibble about that."

"What the hell's going on in Brisbane, what's wrong with country racing, there's none of them going broke," he added.

News of clubs closing in the state comes after the Cairns Jockey Club was told their current schedule of racing would be halved, to just 14 meetings.

A number of Cairns trainers are likely to leave the area because of the overhaul in that area. Club officials say that racing would struggle in the area with the horse population expected to decline. Job losses would also be experienced for the local economy.
