Sylvaner's Morphettville Love Affair Continues
- Saturday, 10 May 2003 00:00
Ballarat bussinessman and trainer Barry James had his doubts before the race but talented mare Sylvaner put the race beyond question soon after the turn in the Group 2 Marsh Classic at Morphettville today.
Sylvaner has an affinity for Morphettville, having won four races from five starts, but a tendon injury almost ended the mare's career soon after her win in the same race last year.
After a long recuperation, the mare bounced back to her best form winning the race for the second time.
"It's taken almost a year to get her back," James said. "It's a great thrill to be able to come back again and win this race. She had more weight this year and it looked a tougher line-up but she just loves it here."
Sylvaner will now back up in Monday week's Listed Pope Packaging Stakes (1600m) - a race she also won last year before a spell.
"She'll stay in
Adelaide now for that race," James said. "She'll be even fitter for the run
and if we get any rain over the next week it will suit her even better."

Sylvaner Back for Another Marsh
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
And along for the ride again this year is talented mare Sylvaner, who has an affinity for Morphettville and will attempt to win back-to-back Marsh Classics.
At her first visit, as a three-year-old, Sylvaner finished out of the placings in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks, but stayed around to win the Stuart Crystal Stakes a fortnight later.
She returned again last year and, not only did she win the Group 2 Marsh Classic, but also saluted in the Listed Pope Packaging Stakes (1600m) on Cup day.
The mare injured a tendon after last year's carnival but has been given a long lay-off in the hope she can return to her best form at her favourite track.
"She had a tendon injury so I gave her a very long break," James said. "I have set her for this race all along - I just hope she can return to her best form."
James is referring to her two unplaced runs this time in but she has needed some "match practice" after such a long break.
"She has really needed the runs but is coming along quite well," James said. "Her work has been good and I'm confident she will show the Syvaner of old this weekend. It's a tough field, though, with some talented mares and she has more weight this year, so it makes it tougher."
Sylvaner will come up against talented mares such as Tickle My, Li Lol Lill, Latte, Devonshire and Lady Knockout as well as a number of up and coming last-start winners.
Should she run well, the mare will be aimed at the Centaurea Stakes - a fillies and mares handicap - on Cup day. Her chances of a win in that race will increase dramatically on a wet track.

Shintaro Aimed at Sprint Double
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
The three-year-old, who was transferred to Smerdon's stables after fellow Aquanita trainer Russell Cameron decided to move to Macau, is primed for a first-up win in Saturday's Group 2 Yallambee Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.
All going to plan, And Shintaro will then run in next weekend's Group 1 Honda Goodwood Handicap at the same track and distance.
And
Shintaro, with three wins and three placings from six starts, can also give
Smerdon back to back Yallambee's after winning last year with another
talented three-year-old Troubles (pictured).
"He is a lovely horse who comes into the race with good form over the summer," Smerdon said. "He lacked a bit of maturity though but seems to have progressed well in his break. I'm really happy with him and he's been trained for this race for a while now."
And Shintaro rounded off his Yallambee preparation with a recent trial at Cranbourne. Smerdon is obviously hoping to win Saturday's Yallambee, but a first three finish will enable the colt to escape the ballot of next weekend's Goodwood.
"He looks as though he'll get a mile, so these two sprints suit his preparation well," Smerdon said. "Assuming he runs well enough in the Yallambee he'll then back up in the Goodwood, and may even go on to Brisbane. The Queensland carnival doesn't give you much time to prepare for the spring though so it will be a matter of weighing that up.We just want to get through Adelaide first."
In another of Saturday's feature races, Smerdon will saddle up Le Destina in the Group 3 Carlton Draught Stakes (2500m) - the final lead-up to the smoke-free Adelaide Cup nine days later.
Le Destina has been racing in great heart in Melbourne and should run a bold race again Saturday.
"He's in good form, winning his last two starts and he's another that seems to have come along well since last year," Smerdon said. "He ran fourth in the Brisbane Cup last year so we know he'll run the two miles, which is pretty important. The Adelaide Cup has been his Autumn aim all along but he may also go to Brisbane afterwards."
Le Destina won a restricted race on this weekend at Morphettville last year but failed to make the Cup line-up. This year, though, he is guaranteed a run, having been handicapped with 55kg.
While Smerdon will be
trackside at Morphettville this weekend, he will have one eye on the meeting
at Moonee Valley where veteran sprinter Bomber Bill has his final hit-out
for the Goodwood. Another of Smerdon's Goodwood hopefuls, Deprave, has
pulled up well since finishing second in the Group 3 Honda Stakes at
Morphettville last weekend.

Two Early Scratchings for SA Derby
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
The John Symons trained Kravitz has been taken out, while the third emergency Exectuor is also an early withdrawal.
With Kravitz being a scheduled runner, this enables to the Stuart Gower trained Clay Man a start in South Australia's blue riband.
Clay Man, currently a 100/1 pop, will be ridden by local senior Ben Claridge.
Mummify holds current clear favouritism for the Derby in all markets.
St Leger Form to the Test in SA Derby
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
In 1999, Our Position finished a close second in the St Leger before finishing third in the Derby, while in 2001 Big Pat won both races. Last year, the Robbie Laing-trained Pantani finished runner-up to recent Sydney Cup placegetter Grey Song in the St Leger, before taking out the South Australian Classic (below).
And
this year's St Leger may also prove a strong form pointer. Sir Pentire,
prepared by Robbie Laing and by the same sire as last year's winner Pentire,
won the 2800m test. A neck away third was Glefti, trained by David Racovolis.
Splitting the pair in a three-way finish was Dance On Wood.
The two horses are drawn alongside each other in barriers five and six respectively for Saturday's event but Racovolis is hoping to turn the tables.
"There was just nothing between them at the end of 2800m last start," Racovolis said. "Glefti travelled well into the straight but didn't show a lot of dash. He rallied again though at the finish and fought on strongly in a good effort. He certainly hasn't gone backwards since and I'm looking forward to the race this weekend."
Racovolis prepared Our Position in 1999 but is confident Glefti can make a better stayer.
"He's still very immature, and I'm happy with what he's done so far as a three-year-old," Racovolis said. "I'm really looking forward to next year though - he'll make a good stayer"
Glefti has won just two races but has two Group placings to his name. Along with his St Leger run, he finished runner-up behind Natural Blitz in the Group 2 Shannon Classic at Caulfield in March.
Assuming Glefti, who will be ridden by Steven King, runs and pulls up well after Saturday, the gelding will back up nine days later in the smoke-free Adelaide Cup, where he has 52kg.
Early markets have Saturday's Veuve Clicquot Stakes winner Mummify as a $2.75 favourite, ahead of Zero Issues, who finished fourth behind Mummify, at $7.00, along with NZ Derby placegetter Lord Woburn. Sir Pentire is on the third line of betting at $9.00, while local hope Vicksburg, third behind Mummify on Saturday, is on $13.00. Glefti is at $17.00 along with another local Jemeela.

Mummify's Perfect Draw Has Him Hot for the Derby
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
The Lee Freedman trained gelding Mummify looks set to continue the great run of graduates from the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale when he lines up in Saturday’s Group One Malaysia Airlines SA Derby (2500m) at Morphettville.
Since the moment he was knocked down to leading Melbourne based trainer Lee Freedman for just $41,000 at the 2001 Adelaide sale, Mummify has always shown he was destined to be above average.
Mummify, a South Australian bred chestnut son of the former champion galloper and Melbourne Cup winner Jeune, is aiming to be his sire’s first Group One winner.
At the barrier draw held earlier this week in Adelaide the Freedman trained proven Group One performer came up with gate four, right alongside the last start VRC St Leger winner Sir Pentire, the second favourite for the blue riband.
From the former talented At Talaq mare Cleopatra’s Girl, Mummify has scored two wins, including his last start runaway win in the Derby’s main lead up, the listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes at Morphettville last Saturday.
As well as being the favourite for the SA Derby, Mummify is also the current favourite for Monday week’s Group One smoke-free Adelaide Cup (3200m). Connections are taking one race at a time and will decide after the Derby whether dreams of winning the Cup will have a chance of occurring.
Freedman will be hoping Mummify can
follow in the footsteps of another Magic Millions graduate who had
provided the trainer with a number of Group One victories, the brilliant
grey Subzero.
Eleven years ago
Subzero shot to prominence in Adelaide when he won the SA Derby. A bit over
a week later he added the Adelaide Cup to his honour roll. The best was
still to come when the super stayer in November won the Melbourne Cup at
Flemington.
Woburn Leads Kiwis Hopes in Derby
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
Lord Woburn (Woburn at home), took just a couple of days to get over the long trip and according to Sharrock is "ready to run a big race".
"He was a little off his feed in the first couple of days but now he's pushing me down to get at it," Sharrock said. "I'm thrilled with the way he's settled in and I'm looking forward to the weekend."
Lord Woburn has five wins from his 13 starts, including a win in the Group 3 MWTU classic (2000m) at Awapuni. But his biggest ever run, according to Sharrock, was when a half-length third to St Reims in the Group 1 NZ Derby.
"He drew barrier 20 and was near enough to last on the turn," Sharrock said. "He made up many lengths in the straight to be beaten about half-a-length. His final sectionals were excellent and I rate his run equal to that of the winner. It's hard to line up the form, I know, but on that run I think he'll be very competitive."
Sharrock
was on hand to watch Mummify thrash his rivals in the Listed Veuve Clicquot
Stakes at Morphettville last Saturday and rates that horse as the one to
beat.
"It was a very soft win by Mummify and you'd have to rate him hardest to beat," Sharrock said. "But my horse is an out and out stayer who will thrive at the trip, and he also has an excellent turn of foot. He will take holding out at the end."
Patrick Payne was originally to have ridden the gelding but an injury has forced him from the saddle. Sharrock was lucky enough, though, to secure the services of top rider Kerrin McEvoy.
Sharrock hasn't tasted success in Australia since the early nineties when Jim's Mate won the Group 2 J.J Liston Stakes at Sandown in 1992. He also won the same race with Kairau Lad three years earlier.

Hall Hoping for Hometown Derby Win
- Friday, 09 May 2003 00:00
Twenty-five years ago this weekend, a young Hall strapped Regal Jester the day he won the Derby for his father Joe. In the saddle that day was John Murray who, now as Joe's foreman at Morphettville, has cared for Zero Issues in the fortnight leading up to tomorrow's race.
The colours of Zero Issues - navy, red and gold - has a fimiliar feel for locals, too, with its principal owners being Adelaide Crows board member Allan Sheppard and Peter Katelanis.
"There's a few local connections with both the owners and the stable, so I'm hoping the horse can do the job," Hall said. "On his form he's earned a chance at a race like this but it will be a real achievement if he can pull it off."
Hall is referring to Zero Issue's limited program and experience going into the race. Of all tomorrow's Derby runners, he has had the least race starts - just four.
"It's a big task to ask a horse to step up to this sort of distance in Group 1 company - especially in the one campaign," Hall said. "Even though his breeding suggests he'd be more of a sprinter he's pretty well always indicated he'd make a stayer. He's a big, long striding horseand looks like a stayer physically."
Hall has set Zero Issues for the South Australian Derby since the gelding finished third at just his second start at Sandown - Hall then declaring the gelding "above average". He secured a trip to Adelaide by winning next start at the same track over 1600m.
In his fourth and final start leading up to tomorrow's race, Zero Issues ran a luckless fourth in the Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes behind Mummify. The gelding settled well and was within striking distance on the turn, but was held up at a crucial stage, finishing fourth beaten less than three lengths.
"He got blocked for a run and shuffled back but went to the line as well as anything," Hall said. "Obviously you never know whether they'll run the extra trip until they try but I was happy with his run and he's done everything right this week.
"His lack of experience might play against him but if he can come through this test it will auger well for the spring. I've no doubt he will be a much better horse next time in."
Luke Currie rode Mummify in the Veuve Clicquot but Danny Nikolic has been booked for that mount in the Derby. Currie quickly secured the ride on Zero Issues soon after learning he had been replaced.
Hall, who began his training career at Morphettville before relocating to Flemington, has already won a Derby - in Victoria - with Hit The Roof in 2000. He is keen to add a hometown win to his record.
Zero Issues must overcome a quality young field though, including his biggest hurdle - pre-race favourite Mummify.
Mummify, an easy winner of the Veuve Clicquot Stakes, can give trainer Lee Freedman his second SA Derby having already won the race with Subzero in 1992. Subzero backed up to win the Adelaide Cup nine days later, before also winning the Melbourne Cup later that year.
Bookmaker Colin Tidy has installed Mummify as a $2.25 chance for tomorrow's Derby, and a $9.00 third favourite for Monday week's Adelaide Cup behind Karadan ($5.50) and Corporate Queen ($7.00). He has 53.5kg in the Adelaide Cup, but could attract a half-kilogram penalty should he win tomorrow. Under the conditions of the race, the winner of the Derby will carry 53kg, but the weights have already been raised one kilogram, which will take Mummify's weight to 54kg.

Holland, rider of KING CROW, explained that he had commenced to improve to the outside of HAND PASS in the vicinity of the 400 metres, however had formed the opinion that the gelding was inclined to lay out under pressure and rather than interfere with runners to his outside he had instead shifted back to the inside of HAND PASS to attempt to make ground. He stated that near the 100 metres he had been obliged to steady as a result of APTEGO (T. Barras) rolling in and was then held up for a short distance before proceeding to take a tight run between that gelding and ULRICHO (D. Tootell). D. Elegant a Super Goodwood Chance
- Saturday, 03 May 2003 00:00
Super Elegant (9.00), prepared by Tony Vasil, carted 58kg and jumped from barrier 18 but still proved too strong for his rivals to win over fellow Aquanita runner and favourite Deprave (5.00).
Local speedster Agalia battled on well for third.
Vasil said Super Elegant, who won the Group 3 The Jansz at Morphettville three years ago as a two-year-old, would be even better suited by the 1200m of the Goodwood.
"He's an even better horse over six furlongs and he did it with a big weight today," Vasil said.
"He drops to 54.5kg in the Goodwood - all we need now is a bit of rain. He grows another leg in the wet."
