Saturday's Sydney Cup fancy Grey Song has been given the top weight for the $404,140 smoke-free Adelaide Cup (3200m), a race at this stage in which he is an unlikely runner.

Trained by veteran Flemington based horseman Tommy Hughes, Grey Song was given 57 kilograms for the race following his recent Group win in Sydney.

The Max Lees trained County Tyrone, the reigning Group One Queensland Derby winner, was handicapped with 56.5 kilos.

Australia's most popular horse Badger's Wood, who ran unplaced in today's Warrnambool Cup behind Gunnamatta, has 54.5 kilograms along with local stayer Odysseus and the Rob Smerdon trained Majestic Avenue.

Gai Waterhouse's Grand City and Majestic Avenue's stablemate Le Destina both were given 54kg.

The top weighted three-year-old in the race is the Lee Freedman trained Mummify (53.5kg),

The winners of the Malaysia Airlines S A Derby (10.5.03), the Carlton Draught Stakes (10.5.03) (Penalty Free Race) and the NZ Hawkes Bay Cup (12.4.03) are exempt from the ballot on this race.

Maguire's Group One Dreams on Track with Sound Action

Victoria's most promising filly Sound Action will face the toughest test of her short career on Saturday when she runs against some established stars in the Group One Schweppes Oaks (2025m) at Morphettville as the Adelaide Cup Carnival hots up.

The filly who is on the brink of boasting an unbeaten record from six starts would give her little known Colac based trainer Roberta Maguire the "thrill of a lifetime" if she lives up to wraps currently bestowed upon her by many good judges.

Well known Sydney bookie Col Tidy released his first market for the Oaks showing Sound Action at the head of betting at $5. She is clear of Lashed ($5.50) and Jameela ($7).

Maguire, who incredibly will saddle up her only other galloper Miss Coconut in a restricted race at Morphettville on the same afternoon, said both fillies would be floated to South Australia tomorrow.

"Both Sound Action and Miss Coconut will leave tomorrow morning," Maguire reported. "And they will be stabled just outside of Adelaide in conditions similar to they have here (at Colac)."

Sound Action, a daughter of the former shuttle stallion Vettori, was a bargain buy for Colac based owners Pat, Chris & John Ladhams and Peter Foley. The group paid just $2,500 for the filly as a two-year-old.

Maguire comes into the story about nine months later when she is the recipient of a phone call that would ultimately change her life.

"I just got a phone call from the owners really out of the blue," Maguire recalled. "They offered her to me to train and I guess the rest is history now."

Sound Action, a strapping chestnut, has the current record of five wins and a second placing from six starts. But her record looks certain to be enhance to a perfect 6 from 6 as her only defeat came at the hands of Bella Vichy, who returned a positive swab. The inquiry, which opened Monday, has been adjourned.

"If she happens to get that race then her record is faultless," Maguire said. "It (the record) just goes to show what a classy filly she is."

Wayne Hokai, one of the state's most proven country riders, gets the opportunity of a lifetime on Saturday when he returns to partner the filly in the Oaks.

"He (Hokai) missed her last win as he was suspended," Maguire said. "It was always the intention to have him ride her in the Oaks."

Maguire is "not at all concerned" about the extra 225 metres of Saturday's feature.

"She'll handle it (the distance) no problems," she said. "And all going well the extra distance of the next Oaks should also be fine."

Maguire, who'll be up against such proven training champions as Lee Freedman, Tony McEvoy, Graeme Rogerson and George Hanlon in the Oaks, never dreamed of being a trainer when she competed in pony club at a young age.

She was a regular showjumper until she moved to Victoria about 15 years ago.

"I guess I got into horse racing when I got married," Maguire said. "My partner owned a racehorse and I thought I could do a better job than his current trainer!"

"Since then I have probably only trained ten horses and all but one have won races for us," she added.

Sound Action will be out to eclipse the racetrack achivements of the former Maguire trained mare Around and Over.

"She (Around and Over) won five city races including a couple of set weights and penalties races for mares at Moonee Valley," she recalled.

Maguire is hoping to go a few places better than Around and Over did in the trainer's only interstate run to date.

"Around and Over finished fifth in the Swettenham Stud Stakes in Adelaide," Maguire recalled. "It was a great run that day."

Ribe has been labeled by Maguire as the horse to beat in Saturday's race, which will also be contested by Group winner Lashed, unbeaten galloper Yvonne, recent Port Adelaide Guineas winner Jamella and the boom George Hanlon trained Alicat, the current first emergency for the event.

While trainers like Lee Freedman, George Hanlon, Graeme Rogerson and Tony McEvoy are regulars in the winning stalls in feature events, Maguire is just hoping her dream can come true on Saturday.

"Group One races are what it is all about," she said. "Everything has gone right so far and I'm just hoping things continue through to Saturday."

And if Sound Action does win Saturday's Group One Oaks you can bet Colac will be in for a party like never before!

The recent dominance of Magic Millions graduates in Sydney over the Autumn Carnival shifted to Adelaide’s Cheltenham track today when graduates from the company’s sales ran the trifecta in the listed KPMG Cinderella Stakes (1000m).

Bargain buy On Focus (Keltrice-Candid Camera by Victory Prince) scored her third stakes win and gave her connections more reason to celebrate when she produced a strong finish to down her more fancied rivals Rinky Dink and Al Samoud.

On Focus, who is trained by little known Morphettville based horseman Craig Curtis, cost her owners a mere $8,000 at the 2002 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Second home was another 2002 Adelaide graduate Rinky Dink, who is by the hot juvenile sire Distorted Humor, while well bred Gold Coast purchase Al Samoud was third home earning valuable black type.

A classy chestnut filly, On Focus, had already earned valuable stakes win in the Walter Brown Stakes last start and on debut last preparation in the Dequetteville Stakes.

All three fillies look set to feature prominently in the upcoming features over the Adelaide Cup Carnival which continues through May.

Million dollar yearling Keep the Faith made a stunning debut to to his racetrack career when he murdered a Melbourne stakes winner in the KPMG Tax Consulting Plate (1000m) at Cheltenham in Adelaide today.

A colt by the champion, yet ill fated, Japanese siring sensation Sunday Silence, Keep the Faith captured headlines as a yearling when he sold for a cool $1.2 million at last year's Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.

Knocked down to the bid of Darley Australia's Oliver Tait, the colt was given to current Adelaide and Melbourne premiership leading trainer Tony McEvoy to train.

McEvoy, who was in Brisbane today, was not surprised by the ease of the win - a four length demolition of Melbourne spring carnival stakes winning juvenile Pinchbeck.

"I'm not surprised at all," McEvoy reported. "He was always our chance for the Blue Diamond and (Golden) Slipper, but he got shin sore."

"He'd always shown plenty of ability and we knew he was something special," he added.

Enjoying a lovely run just off the pace by top local rider Simon Price, Keep the Faith was switch around the leaders heels at the top of the straight and then unleashed a paralysing finishing burst to firstly hit the front and then pull clear in an effortless win.

"It was a top class win," McEvoy said. "Sensational is a good word for it."

McEvoy is not sure where to head with the youngster, who is being ultimately aimed at some of the country's most time honoured Group Ones in the spring.

"We could run in The Jansz (on Adelaide Cup day at Morphettville) or even head to the Sires' (Produce) in Brisbane," McEvoy said.

"But it's the spring that is going to be the major aim with races like the Caulfield Guineas and the (VRC) Derby on the agenda."

Racegoers around the country were all talking about Keep the Faith following his win - with word circulating Cheltenham, Moonee Valley, Randwick and Doomben.

"I heard he was the talk about the track today," his in form trainer said. "Even here in Brisbane plenty (of people) were talking about him well after the race."

"It looks like I've got something special here," he summed up.

Phillip Stoked With Two Runners in Oaks

Morphettville trainer Phillip Stokes has just a baker's dozen of horses in his stable but has managed to secure berths for two of them in Saturday's $250,000 Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m).

Stokes will start the consistent Nancy Eleanor and the improving Making The Road.

Despite his small team, Stokes is currently sitting second on the Metropolitan Trainers' Premiership behind Tony McEvoy, with 21 city wins and a winning strike-rate on 35 per cent.

Having the two fillies in Saturday's feature race at Morphettville is the culmination of 12 months planning for Stokes and he has achieved the result via very different paths.

"A fair while ago I knew I had two horses capable of running in these races," Stokes said. "Nancy Eleanor is pretty classy and has got there through the traditional lead-up races, while Making The Road has taken more time to get to where she is but won very impressively last start and has earned her chance."

Nancy Eleanor won over 1350m first-up at Cheltenham Park, before winning the Group 3 Adelaide Guineas (1600m) next start at Morphettville. Last start, and just her third from a spell, the filly ran a solid fourth behind Yvonne in the Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes (1800m) at Cheltenham Park.

"I thought her run was good," Stokes said. "They didn't go hard but she made up a lot of ground in the straight. She's fitter now, is looking for the extra ground and will appreciate getting back to Morphettville.

"She's been trained to run in both Oaks and is pretty dour. As long as she stays out of trouble and can start winding up at the top of the straight, I think she'll acquit herself well."

Making The Road managed to scrape into the race after winning the Gallipoli Trophy at Victoria Park last Friday. The filly, stepping up from 1450m to 2000m, overcame a slow early pace and sprinted away from her rivals for a comfortable win.

"We aimed her at that race in the hope of earning enough prizemoney to make the field," Stokes said. "That's worked out perfectly and it was a good effort to jump up sharply in trip and win so well. She's pulled up really well and won't have any problem with the trip. She has a lot more dash that her stablemate so has drawn ideally in barrier two."

Nancy Eleanor has drawn barrier seven.

Stokes has had just one Group 1 runner in his career - Squillani who finished well back in the Railway Stakes in Perth late last year.

RACE 1: - ANZAC DAY/SABIS HANDICAP - 1300 metres

COOL RESPONSE (N Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out inconveniencing JAZZIC (J Holder).

Near the 1100 metres COOL RESPONSE (N Tomizawa) was obliged to steady off the heels of TENABLE (B Claridge), which was taken out marginally by MANUNA (C Lever).

Super Groove Heads Top KPMG Field

Talented galloper Super Groove may be one of the least experienced three-year-olds in Saturday's $75,000 Listed KMPG Stakes at Cheltenham Park but what he lacks in match practice he makes up for in ability.

The lightly raced grey, with three wins from just four career starts, has been freshened for the first of the feature Adelaide Cup Carnival sprints since winning easily at Moonee Valley in March.

While the Tony Noonan trained gelding's only failure came at the hands of Yell in the Group 3 C S Hayes Stakes during last year's spring carnival, jockey Nash Rawiller believes he can earn his stripes over the carnival feature sprints.

"I'm sure he'll measure up," Rawiller said. "He pulled up sore after his failure in the spring and was tipped out, but other than that he's done a great job winning all his other starts. He's always had ability but has also kept improving as he's gone along and this looks a nice race for him fresh."

Saturday's KMPG Stakes - the traditional lead-up to the Group 2 The Yallambee Classic (1200m) at Morphettville on May 10 - has drawn a field of 15 talented speedsters both locally and from Victoria. There is an abundance of early speed in the race and one of those capable of taking a forward position is Rawiller's mount.

"He has a very high cruising speed but is quite strong at the end of the races," Rawiller said. "He doesn't have to lead but will be up in the firing line at some stage."

Other Victorian entries include Wyndam Glory and Dubai Ice (Tony McEvoy), Dantana and Norwich (Rick Hore-Lacy), Acee Deecee (Dean Lawson), Pelias (Dan O'Sullivan), Class Success (Michael Moroney), Ottavia (Danny O'Brian) and Nkwazi (Nigel Blackison).

Locals include Naden (Leon Macdonald), Sunday Shoes (Stuart Gower), Cobamuse and Crest Of Gold (David Balfour) and Pura Seda (David Jolly).

Most trainers would be hopeful their charges can graduate to the $150,000 Yallambee Classic, also for three-year-olds, and perhaps continue on to the Goodwood Handicap on May 17.

The first three placegetters from the Yallambee escape the ballot conditions of the Goodwood Handicap.

Last year the locally-trained Zip Zip Aray finished fourth in the KMPG, a luckless third in the Yallambee before winning the Goodwood.
