Magical Pearl

Veteran South Australian miler Magical Pearl prevailed in a typically action-packed renewal of the $80,000 Listed Malaysia Airlines/Advertiser Newspapers Balaklava Cup (1600m).

The win ensured Magical Pearl won his first race since the 2009 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) under weight-for-age conditions.

That's not to say Magical Pearl has endured a form slump. The eight-year-old son of Keltrice was beaten under a length by Alcopop when finishing third last start in this season's Penny Edition.

Trained by Dennis O'Leary, Magical Pearl ($7.50) profited handsomely from a perfect Damien Oliver ride.

The multiple Group 1 winning rider positioned Magical Pearl in fifth position and produced him at the right time to win by three-quarters of a length ahead of Candle ($26).

Trainer William Smart had to settle for another placing in the Balaklava Cup. Silent Surround ($14) finished third while stablemate Silent Sophia ran second behind Haddle McDaddle in last year's edition.

The Lloyd Williams-owned Base ($3.50) rattled home out wide when it was all over for fourth while Xaieta ($17), last year's third placegetter in the Balaklava Cup, finished fifth.

Second favourite Glaneuse ($6) was afforded no favours from his wide barrier and was caught three wide with no cover the entire journey. However under the urgings of Clare Lindop still boxed on bravely to be beaten 2-1/4 lengths into sixth place.

Sadly for the second consecutive year, the Balaklava Cup was marred by a fall over the concluding stages.

The Jon O'Connor-trained Homicide Hank broke a leg and fell shortly after passing the 300 metre mark. Jockey Jeffery Maund was conscious and taken away by ambulance to undergo further precautionary medical tests.

In the other feature race of the day, Basil Da Man ($2.90 fav) claimed the $40,000 Maxwell Cooper's Memorial Sprint (1050m) by a half length ahead of Too Many Reds ($10) who made ground out wide but had every chance to secure victory.

North Beach ($12) was able to sprint quickly when gaining clear galloping room inside the final furlong to finish third ahead of outsider Heaven For Sure ($51).

Obsidian Dragon ($3) was ridden hard to hold the lead out of the gates but quickly wilted under pressure in the straight to finish seventh.

Rebel Raider

The career of dual Derby winner Rebel Raider hangs in the balance after suffering yet another significant injury.

The six-year-old son of Reset was scratched a day before last Saturday's $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks won by Alcopop after co-trainer Andrew Glyvas realised there was heat in his near front leg during a light trackwork hitout.

Scans were immediately taken on the galloper with the sombre results coming through on Monday evening that Rebel Raider had sustained "ligament damage".

"I'm disappointed, but I'm not as devastated I was last year," the other half of the training duo Leon Macdonald told The Advertiser.

"We knew there was a chance this could happen again."

It is now the fourth time Rebel Raider's preparation has been curtailed due to injury.

Rebel Raider enjoyed an injury free three-year-old season, claiming the VRC Derby in November and then the South Australian Derby in May.

However its been a tale of woe since with Rebel Raider unable to string more than two starts together in four subsequent preparations.

Rebel Raider was then retired with the intention of standing at stud. But when no studs showed interest, connections opted to put Rebel Raider back in work for another tilt at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup.

Rebel Raider finished fourth when resuming from a 48 week spell in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on August 6.

Chris BryantThe career of jockey Chris Bryant is at the crossroads after testing positive yet again to a banned substance.

Thoroughbred Racing SA stewards announced this morning that Bryant had been stood down since July 29 after producing a urine sample at Morphettville on July 16 which contained substances amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Bryant has been advised that an inquiry into the circumstances of the analyst’s finding will be conducted at TRSA’s Morphettville offices on Thursday, 8 September, 2011 commencing at 2.30pm (SA time).

The South Australian jockey has incurred the wrath of stewards on more than one occasion for returning positive samples to banned substances.

Bryant was suspended for three months after testing positive to cannabis at Gawler on April 17, 2005.

He then tested positive to oxazepam at Oakbank on March 24, 2008 and was outed for four weeks. Oxazepam is a drug commonly used to treat anxiety and insomnia and in some cases control symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Then last year at Hamilton on April 17, Bryant was suspended by Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) stewards for six months after returning an irregularity to amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Bryant rode seven winners from 73 rides since returning from that suspension last October.

Billy EganApprentice Billy Egan will not be able to ride until mid-September after TRSA stewards handed down their verdict for a positive swab.

Egan produced a urine sample at Morphettville on Saturday, 16 July 2011, in which the substance Phentermine was detected.

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant. The substance is illegal under the rules of races should Phentermine be present at a concentration above 500 µg/L.

In giving his evidence at Monday’s inquiry, Egan admitted to taking the substance the previous evening and consequently pleaded guilty to the charge.

Stewards then suspended Egan for six weeks but backdated the penalty to 29 July, the day he was stood down from riding. He will be able to ride trackwork and in official trials from this Friday onwards while he’ll be free to ride competitively on September 9.

Furthermore, stewards also directed Egan to provide evidence from an approved medical expert regarding his optimum riding weight prior to riding in races.

The racing career of dual Derby winner Rebel Raider looks to be finally over after he aggravated an old sesamoid injury.

Rebel Raider was on the comeback trail after a suitable stud could not be found for the entire before heat developed in his sesamoid following his first-up fourth in the Spring Stakes in Adelaide on August 6.

Trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas scratched the six-year-old from last weekend's Penny Edition Stakes and scans revealed a ligament had broken away from the sesamoid.

"I'm not saying he is finished but he probably is because he will be a seven-year-old next year," Macdonald said.

Injury prevented Rebel Raider running in the past two Melbourne Cups with a fractured sesamoid in the 2010 spring prompting his retirement.

"It was devastating last year when he fractured the bottom part of his sesamoid and it was touch and go this year," Macdonald said.

"It healed up all right but a ligament has come a bit adrift from the bottom of the sesamoid which was probably on the cards when he was put under real pressure.

"He wouldn't have come back if they could have found a decent stud for him and now it looks like we are in the same boat again."

A son of unbeaten Zabeel stallion Reset, Rebel Raider won six of his 21 starts.

He is a Group winner from 1200 metres and his two Group One wins were the Victoria and South Australian Derbys over 2500 metres.

His Group Three-winning half-brother Shamoline Warrior will stand at New Zealand's Bluegables Farm this spring.
