Lone RockThoroughbred Racing SA have announced major prizemoney increases for some of South Australia’s most prestigious races.

Next year’s renewal of the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) will be worth $500,000 while the South Australian Derby (2500m) will be worth $450,000.

Most notably is the fact the 2012 South Australian Racing carnival will be more compressed as compared to previous years.

“We identified this three-week window in the Australian racing calendar and have worked to bring together the majority of our biggest and best races into one exciting Carnival,” said TRSA CEO Jim Watters.

The first week of the carnival will be 'Ladies Day' on April 28, featuring the Group 1 Sportingbet Classic  (1200m) – also known as Robert Sangster Stakes – as well as the Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) and Group 2 Queen Of The South (1600m).

'Derby Day' will follow on May 5 when the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) is held along with the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) and Listed Oaklands Plate (1600m) for two-year-olds.

The carnival will conclude with ‘Super Saturday’ with the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) and three races at Group 3 level including the RA Lee Stakes (1600m) and SA Fillies Classic (2500m).

“The eyes of the nation will be on South Australian racing for that period and we believe that will generate great interest, excitement and investment from all over Australia, with total prizemoney of $3.5M over the three days,” Watters added.

The 2012 edition of the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) will be held on March 12 but a switch to May seems inevitable.

“Obviously, our preference – and that of Thoroughbred Racing SA– would be to have the Adelaide Cup as the culmination of that Carnival, and we will continue to work towards that outcome,” said SAJC Executive Officer Brenton Wilkinson.

“With the support of trainers both locally and interstate, we’re extremely confident the Autumn Carnival will be a huge success.”

TRSA also announced an increase of $548,000 in prizemoney for standard metropolitan Saturday race meetings.

The increase, which takes effect from the start of next season, will mean that prizemoney for current $32,000 races will be increased to $34,000 while ratings banded ‘68+ races’ will increase from the current $32,000 to $40,000.

“Today’s increase follows significant growth in prizemoney with metropolitan stakes increasing by 50% across all categories, Group and Listed prizemoney increasing by 24% and all other classes up by 66% over the last three years,” Watters said.

Black And Bent's Weighty Task

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/50647-black-and-bents-weighty-task.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/090711/r5blackandbent1_ft.jpg desc=Star jumper Black And Bent will have to set a modern-day weight-carrying record to win Saturday's Leslie Short Hurdle at... size=small}

Black And BentStar jumper Black And Bent will have to set a modern-day weight-carrying record to win Saturday's Leslie Short Hurdle at Morphettville.

The Robert Smerdon-trained gelding has been asked to carry 73.5kg in the 3100m event which is his first hurdle start of the season.

Since metrics were introduced in 1972 the highest winning weight has been 73kg, carried by Moon Chase at Caulfield in 1999, Old Fox at Morphettville in January 1984 and Zama Lad who won the South Australian Grand National Steeple at Murray Bridge in May 1984.

Black And Bent hasn't raced over the jumps since winning the Australian Hurdle (3400m) by 12 lengths under 66kg at Sandown in June last year.

At his next start he injured a tendon when runner-up to Niptious in a 2500m heat of the Banjo Paterson series at Moonee Valley and was sidelined for almost a year.

The Black Hawk rising six-year-old goes into Saturday's event as a last-start winner of the Banjo Paterson Series Final (2600m) at Flemington on July 9.

Beyond that connections, who include Melbourne Racing Club chairman Mike Symons, are eyeing a trip to Japan for Black And Bent to tackle rich jumps events in either December or in the autumn.

"It's fair to say tomorrow is a means to an end. It's not ideal," Smerdon said.

"If there was an option in Melbourne such as a 2600-metre race on Saturday we might have gone there but he needed something, particularly a hurdle start, leading into Warrnambool on Sunday week where it will be 3600 metres and probably wet conditions.

"So the trip over and back and the race is the best option we could come up with. He's in great shape and he has the constitution to handle all that.

Black And Bent"It'll be interesting to see how he handles the weight. They say weight will stop a train but we're expecting him to win the race."

The reigning Australian Jumper of the Year, who has won six and been placed in another four of his 12 career jumps starts, is set for the Kevin Lafferty Hurdle (3600m) at Warrnambool on July 31 ahead of the $200,000 Grand National Hurdle (4000m) at Sandown on August 14.

Smerdon has built up Black And Bent's fitness with three flat trials, three flat runs and three hurdle trials, the latest when second to Phaze Action over 2400m at Pakenham on Monday.

Steven Pateman has been engaged to ride Black And Bent in all his jumps assignments over the winter.

Strathalbyn-based trainer Mick Whittle has been issued with a suspended fine after pleading guilty to abusing an official.

TRSA stewards received a complaint from an official at the Strathalbyn Racing Club that on May 31 Whittle used foul language towards the official in a telephone conversation.

After considering all circumstances in the case, stewards imposed a $400 fine which is wholly suspended on the proviso Whittle is not found guilty of a similar breach in the next six months.

Whittle will saddle up talented sprinter Periduki in Saturday's $32,000 Betfair +68 Handicap (1000m) at Morphettville Parks and if successful, Periduki will have won three of his last four starts.

Talented South Australian middle-distance galloper Brad Star has been spelled following his nasty fall in Sunday’s $20,000 Port Augusta Cup (2250m).

Brad Star was racing in fourth position, one away from the rail, and jockey Shayne Cahill appeared to be commencing his run three-wide around the field to join the leaders just prior to the home turn.

But Brad Star knuckled badly and fell to the ground, dumping Cahill and bringing down Nicole Stone aboard the Trevor Day-trained Lottyliel.

Brad Star examined at the Morphettville Equine Clinic earlier this week which revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg with significant soft tissue swelling to the near hind leg.

Trainer Vincent Bradley told stewards he would now spell Brad Star as he would need approximately six to eight weeks rest in the paddock to recover from the soft tissue damage.

Bradley was advised by TRSA stewards that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required prior to presenting for a future trial or race.

Brad Star, who won the 2007 Darwin Guineas and Northern Territory Derby, has raced 60 times for 12 wins and placings with prizemoney beyond the $400,000 mark.

Meanwhile, Cahill is expected to out of the saddle for a fortnight as he recovers from minor facial injuries but in contrast Stone walked away unscathed from Sunday’s tumble.
