RACE 1 – SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 2200 metres

Approaching the winning post on the first occasion YOUNG BEAUTY (T Barras) shifted in on to FREELANCE (D Carney) taking that mare in on to SWITCH VISION (C Symons) taking that gelding in tightening PURE GOLD STAR (C Lindop), which was forced to check and lose its position. YOUNG BEAUTY continued in tightening FREELANCE, SWITCH VISION on to CROWNED SERDAR (B Claridge). T Barras was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137 (a) and suspended from riding for a period from midnight on Thursday 26 December 2002 and to expire at midnight on Wednesday 1 January 2003, a period of five meetings. In determining the penalty Stewards considered that T Barras had not been previously suspended in almost three years of riding.

Near the 1300 metres PURE GOLD STAR (C Lindop) was obliged to steady off the heels of FREELANCE (D Carney), which shifted in.

RACE 2 – HAMILTON SUNSCREEN PLATE 1000 metres

The start of this race was delayed owing to M Neilson rider of MAGICAL SWITCH being injured as a result of that filly rearing in the mounting yard. M Neilson was ruled unfit and was replaced by N Tomizawa.

Shortly after jumping PROPER BAY (B Grimston), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in on to SIGISHOARA (Darren Holland) resulting in that gelding being taken in on to MR JAY VEE (J Potter). MR JAY VEE reacted away and shifted in abruptly breaking through the running rail. PROPER BAY continued to lay in throughout the remainder of the race. PROPER BAY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

Near the 400 metres MAGICAL SWITCH (N Tomizawa) shifted out inconveniencing SMYTZER’S WHISPER (C Symons).

Inside the 400 metres SIGISHOARA (Darren Holland) shifted out resulting in both MAGICAL SWITCH (N Tomizawa) and SMYTZER’S WHISPER (C Symons) reacting away.

M Neilson was further examined by the Club’s Doctor who ruled him fit to fulfil his remaining engagements.

J Potter was transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for precautionary X-Rays.

RACE 3 – IT’S XMAS – CALL THE BROADWAY BUTCHER HANDICAP 1250 metres

Near the 500 metres KADASHA (B Claridge) was disappointed when attempting to improve inside CARDONAGH (M Neilson) and was then required to steady off the heels of CARDONAGH.

Inside the 400 metres LETA (C Symons), which had been inclined to lay out continued to lay out severely hampering LUANDA STAR (S Price) on a number of occasions. C Symons was reprimanded and advised that in future he would be required to stop riding and attempt to straighten his mount. LETA was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4 – MALAYSIA AIRLINES HANDICAP 1800 metres

On jumping away ELEPHANT ROCK (C Symons) was tightened by WILLIAM OF OZ (D Tootell), which had been taken out by runners on his inside at the same time TARTAN ARMY (D Carney) laid in. Near the 1600 metres SIMPLY MAGICAL (T Creek) was inclined to get its head up and race ungenerously.

RACE 5 – RADIO TAB HANDICAP 1450 metres

PALAZZO (W Kerford) was slow to jump.

On jumping away DANCING LASS (C Symons) shifted out on to CLASSICAL ROCK (D Tootell) taking that gelding out on to AMENGEE (T Barras), which shifted out tightening KOODO POLO (B Claridge), who then clipped the heels of TENNESSEE ROYAL (S Price).

RACE 6 – MITTY’S HANDICAP 1000 metres

MAVOURTRICE (J Holder) jumped away awkwardly and was then tightened by TORFILA (H McKechnie), which had been taken out by APTEGO (M Neilson), which had been taken out by LOS TOREROS (T Barras).

J Holder the rider of MAVOURTICE explained that after being inconvenienced on jumping away his mount had not travelled as well as he had expected and it struggled to keep the back of APTEGO as that gelding improved. He added in his opinion MAVOURTICE had raced like a tired horse. MAVOURTICE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – COURAN COVE ISLAND RESORT HANDICAP 1300 metres

SPANISH ARMS (C Lindop) jumped away awkwardly.

DISCO KID (J Holder) was slow to jump.

Near the 500 metres MAZUMA MIRAGE (B Vale), which was inclined to lay out, rolled out and inconvenienced LORD JAPATO (NZ) (B Claridge), which became unbalanced for a short distance.

In the vicinity of the 400 metres, MAZUMA MIRAGE (B Vale), which continued to lay out, shifted out and was obliged to steady off the heels of LORD JAPATO (NZ) (B Claridge), which rolled in.

DISCO KID, which performed poorly was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to be sore in both fore heels.

RACE 8 – AUSTRALASIAN TURF MONTHLY HANDICAP 1250 metres

REFLEXES (D Tootell) jumped away awkwardly.

BELTELLO (B Claridge) made the turn off the back straight awkwardly and shifted out obliging LOCHIE’S BOY (Darren Holland) to race wide.

Near the 800 metres BELTELLO (B Claridge) was obliged to steady off the heels of ANATOLIA (N Tomizawa), which shifted in.

Darren Holland the rider of LOCHIE’S BOY explained that he had eased that gelding out of the event inside the 200 metres as he had become concerned that it was making a noise and was struggling in its action.

LOCHIE’S BOY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Miss K Mooney the trainer of LOCHIE’S BOY informed stewards that the gelding would be subjected to an extensive Veterinary examination. Stewards advised Miss Mooney that the gelding would be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial before accepting for a future event.

Race 3

Mr L Macdonald, the trainer of SMOOTH AS SILK, advised Stewards that the mare underwent an extensive Veterinary examination subsequent to Wednesday’s race and the examination revealed SMOOTH AS SILK to have a deep seated bruise in the near fore hoof.

Race 5

Mr L Macdonald, the trainer of BETA FORTUNE, advised Stewards that the mare underwent an extensive Veterinary examination subsequent to Wednesday’s race and the examination revealed BETA FORTUNE to have a bone chip in the near fore fetlock. Mr Macdonald advised that he had recommended to the owners that BETA FORTUNE now be retired.

Race 7

Stewards conducted an inquiry into an incident, which occurred in the vicinity of the 1100 metres.

H McKechnie the rider of RECKABAR was found guilty of a Charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137 (a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of OAKFIELD PRINCE (B Vale) taking that gelding in on to BIG DEMAND (J Maund), which was severely hampered and taken in on to RALLY (J Potter), which was forced to check and lose its position whilst being tightened on to TRIMAHA (C Lindop) resulting in that gelding contacting the running rail and being forced to check.

H McKechnie was suspended from riding for a period from midnight on Sunday 22 December 2002 and to expire at midnight on Saturday 4 January 2003, a period of seven meetings. In determining the penalty Stewards took into consideration there were four metropolitan meetings.
