Gower to Kick off Sunday Shoes' Stakes Run

Talented grey filly Sunday Shoes will target the Listed KMPG and Group 3 Honda Stakes after a strong first-up win at Cheltenham Park on Saturday.

While trainer Stuart Gower is reluctant to commit to a run in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap, he is not ruling out the possibility should the filly complete her two immediate tasks.

The $75,000 Listed KMPG Stakes, over 1000m at Cheltenham Park on April 26 is next in line before backing up a week later in the $100,000 Group 3 Honda Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

"She was only half-fit on Saturday and will definitely improve on the run," Gower said. "Her best form is over 1000m and she doesn't have any trouble with 1100m but anything further sees her out."

On Saturday, Sunday Shoes beat a talented line-up of experienced sprinters, sitting just off the leader and running away to win easily with Ben Claridge in the saddle.

"She seems a lot more relaxed now and it was good to see her take a bit of a sit, because she normally just jumps and runs," Gower said. "She has pulled up super and should go well in the two lead-ups to the Goodwood. I won't rule out a start in that race but she would need to go really well in the Honda Stakes."

Meanwhile, promising filly Subella will have a wind-sucking operation this week following her defeat in Saturday's Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes. The filly raced on the pace but laboured in the straight, finishing 12th and beaten almost six lengths behind Yvonne.

Gower said the filly had wind-sucked throughout the race and would see the vets this week. He has all but aborted plans to run her in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 3, instead backing off and aiming her at the Listed Stuart Crystal Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on May 17 - Goodwood Handicap day.
