RACE 1 – WEST END DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE - 2050 metres

Upon jumping away FREELANCE (D. Carney) and TERRIST (W. Kerford) bumped together.

Racing to the winning post on the first occasion FREELANCE (D. Carney) made slight contact with KENTON KNIGHT (M. Neilson), resulting in that gelding shifting out onto OSH (Darren Holland), which became inconvenienced when having to be eased off the heels of ARRABIN (NZ) (B. Claridge).

M. Neilson, rider of KENTON KNIGHT, reported to Stewards the gelding was held up for a short distance in the vicinity of the 400 metres.

A Veterinary examination of OSH subsequent to the event revealed the gelding had sustained a puncture wound to its near fore leg.

RACE 2 – MICHAEL NASALIK MEMORIAL HANDICAP - 1600 metres

Racing to the 1400 metres HAPPY FAMILY (A. Stead) shifted in, resulting in REAL SHANTY (D. Tootell) being hampered. A. Stead was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres PIT BOSS KISS (NZ) (B. Neville) had to be eased when tightened by REAL SHANTY (D. Tootell) on its outside, which was taken in marginally by HAPPY FAMILY (A. Stead).

RACE 3 – MERRY CHRISTMAS / SABIS F & M MAIDEN PLATE - 1350 metres

In the vicinity of the 700 metres VINTAGE GIRL (C. Lindop) became unbalanced for a short distance when racing tight on the inside of GRANDE ROSSO (J. Potter).

IWO JIMA (J. Lyon) showed a tendency to hang out throughout the event. A subsequent Veterinary examination revealed the mare had slight soreness in the near side of its lower back. Mr. A. Muhlethaler, Trainer of IWO JIMA, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the mare accepting for any future event. IWO JIMA must also complete a Barrier Trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before accepting for any future event.

RACE 4 – CLIPSAL CLASS 4 HANDICAP (HEAT 5 STAR OF XMAS SERIES - 1350 metres

KING’S HAVEN (D. Tootell) raced ungenerously in the vicinity of the 800 metres and threw its head in the air.

Racing inside the 600 metres ELLAWARREN LAD (B. Claridge) shifted in slightly onto KING’S HAVEN (D. Tootell), who in turn shifted in slightly onto COZARVY (C. Lindop), resulting in those three horses brushing together for a short distance.

Rounding the home turn PARINGA (D. Carney) shifted out slightly, making contact with ELLAWARREN LAD (B. Claridge).

RACE 5 – GARWOODS EARTHMOVERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1600 metres

SWITCH VISION (S. Price) was slow to begin.

Apprentice M. Neilson rider of FINA DAZE (NZ), Trainer Mr. K. M. Sweeney and the Stable Foreman Mr. R. Mirelli were questioned into the reasons for M. Neilson returning to the Scales three-quarters of a kilogram over the weight at which he had weighed out. After taking evidence Mr. K. Sweeney was fined $100 under ARR 140A for carelessness in saddling FINA DAZE (NZ) with the addition of a towel.

RACE 6 – TRENCHLESS PIPELAYING CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

MASTER SIMBA, which underwent a Veterinary examination prior to the start, revealed the gelding was lame in the off fore leg. As a result MASTER SIMBA was a late withdrawal at 3.28 p.m. on Veterinary advice.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on MASTER SIMBA be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN 5 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE 6 cents in the dollar.
SP bets are not subject to the deductions.

BLUE PRINCESS (S. Price) was held up momentarily at the 600 metres, and in the vicinity of the 300 metres the filly had to be eased from the heels of TERTIAN’S GAMBLE (J. Lyon), which was weakening.

When questioned into the performance of RORTING, C. Bryant reported to Stewards the gelding never seemed interested in racing in today’s event despite niggling RORTING throughout the race. When put under the whip RORTING never responded to C. Bryant’s riding. Mr. M. Minervini, Trainer of RORTING advised Stewards it would be his intention to trial the gelding before accepting for any future race again. A Veterinary examination of RORTING, which had performed disappointingly, revealed the gelding had intermittent lameness in its off fore leg.

RACE 7 – STRATHALBYN TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1350 metres

BARTAS BOY (B. Dunn) jumped away awkwardly.

On jumping away SPAGET (J. Potter) shifted out, resulting in GUNS ‘N’ GLORY (D. Carney) being inconvenienced.

RACE 8 – HAPPY NEW YEAR MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres

ZANY was a late withdrawal at 4.48 p.m. when the gelding, after being loaded, broke through the barriers riderless and galloped some distance.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on ZANY be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN 7 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE 8 cents in the dollar.
SP bets are not subject to the deductions.

GOOD TURN (M. Neilson) jumped away awkwardly.

BENGRETA LAD (T. Creek) was slow to begin.

AMENGEE (A. Stead) jumped away awkwardly and was inconvenienced due to POKEMONSTER (C. Buchiw) shifting in slightly.

GOLILLY (B. Vale) showed a tendency to race wide throughout the event and shift away from runners on its inside. Mrs. B. Geracitano, Trainer of GOLILLY, was warned that a repetition of the mare’s racing manners may lead to action being taken against it.

Racing to the 500 metres GOLILLY (B. Vale), which had commenced to weaken, had to be checked when racing tight between YE MIGHTY (B. Claridge) on its inside, which shifted out marginally and ACE SURE (D. Tootell) on its outside, which shifted in slightly.
