Neilson stated that after being slow to begin he had elected to stay at the back of the field as he felt that if he had tried to take a position closer to the lead he would have been caught wide in the middle stages. He further stated that when he eventually made a run around the field from the 600 metres he had been caught wide on the home turn and because of the quick pace over the final 400 metres, UMANOOLA was unable to make up any ground. UMANOOLA was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

He further informed Stewards that THE EX FILES had been shod on both hind feet on the morning of the mare’s last start and it was his opinion that this had contributed to its poor performance last week. Mr. Jolly further advised last week was the second time THE EX FILES had been shod on the morning of a race and had performed poorly. He added that he will have THE EX FILES shod prior to race day in future. He also added that in his opinion the way the race was run today contributed to the improved performance of the mare.
