Tokyo City Cup Naming Rights Won by Centre Racing

Twenty-five companies all vied for the opportunity to become race name sponsors of the 2003 Group 3 Tokyo City Cup, a principal feature race in the Jayco Summer of Speed Festival.

The February 15, $100,000 event is one of the of most valuable races of its grade in the country and for the fourth year the SA Jockey has conducted a unique sponsorship lottery that sees the winner not only gain the naming rights to the race but also win a year round sponsorship package and a trip to Japan to witness the running of the Adelaide City Cup.

Previous winners have been Blackwell Funerals (2000), SA Independent Forwarding (2001) and Rawson’s Electrical (2002) but the company identified as the 2003 sponsor at Friday night’s draw was Centre Racing, a Northern territory licensed bookmaker, offering telephone and internet betting. It is owned and operated by Terry Lillis who has been a registered bookmaker since 1969.

Other prize winners were – Forrest Estate Wines, Honda Australia, Silverline Security and Bonnett’s Saddleworld.

Lindsay Park out to defend title

The Jayco Summer of Speed Trainers competition had a familiar look to it after completion of the first round of the Series on Saturday at Victoria Park. Tony McEvoy, who won the event last year, got off to a flyer in this year’s event as 2-year-old Regrowth, strolled to victory in the Feltex Carpets Queen Adelaide Stakes. McEvoy also picked up two points with his other runner, Rainbow Echo.

The day’s other feature; the Feltex Carpets New Year’s Gift was won by the quality mare Devil In Disguise, trained by Bill Papazaharoudakis. There were more points for Lindsay Park as the former Western Australian Lady Knockout finished fourth.
