RACE 1 – HENNIG & COMPANY/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE  -   1250 metres

There was a delay at the start when an adjustment was made to the bridle of DANELEAH (B. Claridge).

TALUSE (J. Burgess) jumped awkwardly and then dipped shortly after the start.

IMELDA SEA (B. Grimston) was reluctant to hold its position when racing on the inside of NOT LATE (C. Lindop) in the vicinity of the 1000 metres, and as a result lost its position.

Near the 100 metres OUR KDAN (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied when DANELEAH (B. Claridge) shifted out at the same time as TALUSE (J. Burgess) shifted in.   Both J. Burgess and B. Claridge were reminded of their obligations when shifting ground.

Over the concluding stages ESKION (B. Dunn) had to be steadied from the heels of GOD SENT (R. Faehr).

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of IMELDA SEA revealed no visible abnormalities.  Trainer, Mr. J. Francis, was advised that a warning had been placed on IMELDA SEA in relation to its poor performance.

RACE 2 – MAGIC MILLIONS/SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP  -   1000 metres

CHIFLEY’S FIRE was unruly en route to the barrier and dislodged its rider, N. Tomizawa, on two occasions.  N. Tomizawa was examined by the Club’s Medical Officers at the barriers and passed fit to ride.  Trainer, Mr. N. Reidy, was advised that a warning had been placed on CHIFLEY’S FIRE in relation to its unruly behaviour.

SPHINXI (C. Buchiw) missed the start by several lengths.

Prior to the declaration of Correct Weight, C. Buchiw approached the Stewards regarding SPHINXI being held in the gates.  Stewards took evidence from Apprentice C. Buchiw, Starter, Mr. G. Woods, and Barrier Attendants, Messrs. R. Ness & R. Adams, in relation to the reason for SPHINXI missing the start by several lengths.   After taking evidence from all parties, acting on their own observations and viewing the official patrol film head-on at the start, Stewards declared SPHINXI a non-runner under ARR 134A for being denied a fair start when it was determined that the filly was being held by two barrier attendants when the gates were released.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on SPHINXI be refunded.   Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN -            29 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE -       20 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

Trainer, Mr. M. Hebberman, was advised that a warning had been placed on SPHINXI for being fractious in the barriers.

Inside the 100 metres LINCOLN SEA (R. Faehr) had to be steadied from the heels of CADBURY (S. Price).

RACE 3 – AZTEC  SERVICES PTY LTD FLYING HANDICAP  -   1000 metres

No report.

RACE 4 – YALUMBA DISTANCE CLASS 2 HANDICAP  -  1750 metres

BLAZING IMAGE (Darren Holland) was slow to begin.

RUSSIAN ROCKET (K. Stra) was fractious in the gates prior to the start and momentarily had its neck caught under the starting gate.

RACE 5 – EYRE AUTO GROUP CLASS 4 HANDICAP  -  1250 metres

Near the 1000 metres SUPREMELY (Darren Holland) shifted in for a short distance and as a result DIGBURY (C. Buchiw) had to be steadied momentarily.   Darren Holland was advised to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of SUPREMELY revealed that the mare was sore in both front fetlocks.  Trainer, Mr. R. Angelo, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before SUPREMELY was accepted for any future races.

SPRING DANCE (B. Dunn) raced wide on the home turn.

RACE 6 – HOME TIMBER & HARDWARE CLASS 2 HANDICAP  -   1000 metres

RIVER CHI (J. Bowditch) jumped out at the start and hampered WALK TALL (C. Buchiw).

DIAD (B. Grimston) jumped in at the start and bumped VAINEST (K. Stra).

Inside the 800 metres GIL ECHO (J. Burgess) shifted out and inconvenienced DIAD (B. Grimston).  Shortly after DIAD, which was showing a tendency to lay in, shifted in onto VAINEST (K. Stra), which in turn shifted in onto ANTIQUE EDGE (C. Lindop) causing that gelding to lose its position.  No action was taken other than to advise B. Grimston and K. Stra of their obligations when placed in a similar situation in future. Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of RIVER CHI revealed that the gelding was lame in the off foreleg.  Trainer, Mr. B. Cozamanis, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before RIVER CHI was accepted for any future races.

RACE 7 – BOSTON BAY WINES HANDICAP  -  1950 metres

Correct Weight was delayed in being semaphored for this event to allow N. Tomizawa, the rider of the third placegetter BAUDIN, to view the official Stewards’ patrol film of the finish.  After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, N. Tomizawa lodged an objection against the second placegetter BAD BOY BUCK (B. Claridge) alleging interference over the final 150 metres.  After taking evidence from all parties, acting on their own observations and on viewing the official Stewards’ patrol film, Stewards dismissed N. Tomizawa’s objection.

Over the concluding stages BAD BOY BUCK (B. Claridge) shifted in at the same time as LOCANDO (Darren Holland) shifted out slightly and as a result BAUDIN (N. Tomizawa) was inconvenienced.  B. Claridge was reprimanded and advised to exercise more control over his mounts when they commence to shift ground.

Trainer Mr. H. Oats, and Jockey, W. Kerford, were both questioned regarding the apparent poor performance of KOORAN KID in today’s event.  W. Kerford advised Stewards that KOORAN KID had commenced to race in his normal fashion towards the rear of the field early in the race but passing the finish post on the first occasion had commenced to pull very hard and did so until approximately the 1200 metres.   He informed the Stewards that approaching the 700 metres, when in last position, KOORAN KID had failed to respond at all to his riding and even over the concluding stages, when he had struck KOORAN KID with his whip, he had failed to respond.  He also added that KOORAN KID had sweated up badly before today’s race, which was highly unusual for the gelding.  Mr. Oats advised the Stewards that KOORAN KID had worked normally going into today’s race and he was confident that the gelding would perform well.   He further advised Stewards that it was his intention to continue on with the preparation of KOORAN KID leading up to the Port Lincoln Cup.  Stewards advised Mr. Oats and W. Kerford that they would note their explanations and further advised Mr. Oats to inform them of anything that may become obvious to explain the gelding’s poor run, in the next few days.  KOORAN KID was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

Subsequent to the race, when in the swabbing stall, BAD BOY BUCK was treated by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon after developing thumps.

RACE 8 – PORT LINCOLN FRESH FISH COMPANY CLASS 1 HANDICAP   -  1350 metres

FIND THE LINE was withdrawn by Stewards at 3.37 pm acting on confirmed advice from Trainer, Mrs. K. Faulds, that the gelding was sore in the near foreleg.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of KALAMAYA (J. Burgess) revealed that the mare had returned sore in the near fore fetlock.  Trainer, Mr. S. Drewitt, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required for KALAMAYA before it was accepted for any future races.
