RACE 1 : - SILVERLINE SECURITY HANDICAP 2400 metres

SHOWGAZER (J Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 2 : - SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1800 metres

MISS STRESS (S Tronerud) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 500 metres, PALIENTE (J Lyon) shifted out and brushed TOP KALA (C Buchiw).

Inside the 500 metres MEDIPAL (C Bryant) in attempting to improve shifted out and brushed BELLTON (M Neilson), which upon receipt of pressure, shifted out onto TOP KALA (C Buchiw), which was tightened on to CROWNED SERDAR (J Holder) resulting in TOP KALA (C Buchiw) having to ease and lose position.

RACE 3 - WOLF BLASS HANDICAP 1300 metres

ALI GEE (J Holder) jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the 800 metres CYCLONE AT SEA (D Yendall) became ungenerous and shifted out brushing RUN LIKE BLEVIC (N Tomizawa) and became unbalanced for a short distance.

Near the 700 metres, as the pace slackened, BRETON ROSE (C Lindop) was obliged to steady off the heels of RUN LIKE BLEVIC (N Tomizawa).

RUN LIKE BLEVIC, whichperformed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported a prolonged elevated heart rate

RACE 4 - KPMG BALCREST STAKES 1000 metres

PAY KEYS (P Marks) was slow to jump.

Near the 600 metres, BLUCHER (S Price) shifted in and tightened LUCRATIVE DANCER (D Carney) onto KINGSTON SEA (C Lindop) taking that gelding in onto GOLD ON GOLD (B Claridge). Shortly after, whilst continuing to race tight, LUCRATIVE DAME (D Carney) shifted in and away from BLUCHER (S Price), resulting in KINGSTON SEA (C Lindop) being forced to steady off the heels of LUCRATIVE DAME (D Carney). Although not held entirely responsible for the incident, S Price was advised that in future he would be required to give riders on his inside more room, particularly in two-year-old races.

S Price the rider of BLUCHER explained that he was pleased with the manner in which the colt raced until the 400 metres. However, he stated that when placed under pressure after entering the straight, BLUCHER had not responded to his riding. BLUCHER was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Stewards ordered a swab sample to be taken from BLUCHER.

RACE 5 - PETER COCHRANE HANDICAP 1450 metres

LEADER’S PRIDE (T Creek) was slow to jump.

Inside the 1200 metres, BELL’S SPIRIT (B Claridge), which had continued to race greenly, shifted out and brushed CRYSTALLION (C Bryant).

In the vicinity of the 400 metres NANCY ELEANOR (J Bowditch) was held up for some distance.

Near the 100 metres FLASH HENRY (M Neilson) shifted out onto CRYSTALLION (C Bryant), taking that gelding out onto NISKIKAWA (J Holder), which was tightened onto the hindquarters of SHANGHAI MOON (NZ) (S Price), resulting in that mare being turned in. In consequence, CRYSTALLION (C Bryant) and NISKIKAWA (J Holder) were forced to check off the heels of FLASH HENRY (M Neilson). M Neilson was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and was suspended from riding for a period from midnight on Sunday 16 March and to expire at midnight on Thursday 27 March 2003, a period of six meetings.

Correct weight for this event was delayed to permit Simon Price the rider of the third placegetter SHANGHAI MOON (NZ) to view the official footage of the concluding stages. S Price lodged an objection against the second placegetter FLASH HENRY, on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding 100 metres. After considering the evidence, viewing the official footage and acting on their own observations, Stewards were not convinced that FLASH HENRY was totally responsible for the interference suffered by SHANGHAI MOON (NZ) and dismissed the objection.

P Gatt, rider of AKHADALANE, explained that he felt that colt was sore in the front and had got its tongue over the bit. AKHADALANE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported AKHADALNE to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Mr J Murray, representing Mr J Hall trainer of AKHADALANE, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required before accepting for any future event.

RACE 6 - H C NITSCHKE STAKES 1450 metres

Approaching the 1300 metres, ICELAND (N Tomizawa) shifted in tightening JAMEELA (C Bryant) onto MR JAZZ MAN (S Tronerud), resulting in JAMEELA losing its position. N Tomizawa was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137 (a) and was suspended from riding for a period from midnight on Saturday 15 March 2003 and to expire at midnight on Wednesday 2 April 2003, a period of six meetings.

Shortly after this incident MR JAZZ MAN (S Tronerud), which was inclined to get its head up, was taken in by ICELAND (N Tomizawa), as a result that gelding being tightened by YVONNE (S Price), which shifted in. S Price was reprimanded for shifting ground when insufficiently clear.

Approaching the finish KING’S ARCH (D. Tootell) was obliged to steady off the heels of YVONNE (S. Price), which shifted out at the same time as MR. JAZZ MAN (S. Tronerud) rolled in.

Correct weight for this event was delayed to permit Shane Tronerud, rider of the second placegetter MR. JAZZ MAN, to view the official footage. S Tronerud lodged an objection against the winner YVONNE, on the grounds of alleged interference 150 metres after the start. After considering the evidence, viewing the official footage and acting on their own observations, Stewards were not convinced that YVONNE was totally responsible for the interference suffered by MR JAZZ MAN and dismissed the objection.

J Bowditch, rider of DEBBEN, reported that he felt his mount was reluctant to extend its stride during the event. DEBBEN was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 -FORREST ESTATE WINES HANDICAP 1450 metres

The start of this race was delayed owing to SHANICITY (NZ) refusing to load. Acting on advice from the Starter, Mr. L. Cromwell, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SHANICITY (NZ) at 4.28pm. Mr G Lesnikowski, trainer of SHANICITY (NZ), was advised the gelding would be suspended from racing for a period of two months, and would be required to trial twice to the satisfaction of Stewards before accepting for any future event.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on SHANICITY (NZ) be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 3 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 4 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

Shortly after the start, WINNING SPIRIT shifted out and inconvenienced CATLIGHT (H Akiyama).

Inside the 1300 metres CATLIGHT (H Akiyama) shifted in onto WINNING SPIRIT (W Kerford), taking that gelding onto SADLER JOH (C Lindop), which was tightened onto WESTACE (N Tomizawa), resulting in that gelding’s hindquarters being turned in and SADLER JOH (C Lindop) having to steady and lose its position. An inquiry into this incident was adjourned until next Saturday 22 March 2003, owing to C Lindop being given permission to leave the course.

Approaching the 200 metres WESTACE (N Tomizawa), in anticipating a run between CATLIGHT (H Akiyama) and ZIBELLINO (NZ) (C Bryant), became held up for a short distance.

CATLIGHT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

TO PAY UP, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to have a lower than expected heart rate.

RACE 8 - EVRIGHT TROPHIES HANDICAP 1250 metres

NIGHT THUNDER (J Lyon) jumped away awkwardly.

AMBERLIGHT (S Price) and MISS BALHANNAH (D Yendall) were slow to jump.

On jumping away, JACK OF SPADES (W Kerford) shifted out and tightened ONYX RIVER (C Bryant) onto TAOS PLEASURE (S Tronerud).

Shortly after jumping away, AMBERLIGHT (S Price) was hampered by MISS BALHANNAH (D Yendall), which shifted out.

CULLEN BAY, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and was found to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Mr Fryer was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required before accepting for any further event.

AMBERLIGHT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported that gelding to be sore in both fore feet. Mr. R. Jolly, the trainer of AMBERLIGHT was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to accepting for a future event.
