RACE 1 : MARSH HANDICAP - 1812 metres

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow Mr. G. Kennewell to view the official print for second. After considering a submission from Mr. Kennewell, Stewards were satisfied with the official placings and Correct Weight was declared.

LYRICAL PRINCE (B. Blacker) jumped away awkwardly.

S. Price, the rider of REGAL SHAMROCK, explained that after receiving a brush from LYRICAL PRINCE (B. Blacker) in the vicinity of the 1400 metres, his mount had commenced to race a little more keenly than he would have wished and had commenced to lay out. He stated that REGAL SHAMROCK continued to race on one rein for the remainder of the event and from the 700 metres he had to niggle his mount to keep to the back of BELTELLO (W. Kerford). In the vicinity of the 600 metres, due to his mount not responding, he had been unable to prevent BELTELLO shifting out and dictating to him. He added that in the straight REGAL SHAMROCK, in his opinion, had been one paced.

Stewards questioned Apprentice B. Blacker regarding her riding of LYRICAL PRINCE over the concluding stages of the race. B. Blacker was reprimanded and advised to ensure that she ride her mounts to the finish of a race in accordance of the Rules in future.

S. Price, the rider of REGAL SHAMROCK, was questioned regarding his riding of that filly over the final strides of this event. S. Price explained that his mount had raced on one rein for almost the entire distance and he had genuinely formed a belief that he had headed the second placegetter. After considering this explanation, Stewards reprimanded S. Price and advised him that if they had not considered there were extenuating circumstances to his predicament, a penalty would have been imposed, however, informed him he had an obligation under the Rules to ride his mount to the finish of a race.

RACE 2 : MALAYSIA AIRLINES HANDICAP - 1000 metres

Mr. S. Lockhart, representing Mr. A. McEvoy, the trainer of OUR PERFECT WORLD, which proved difficult to load, was advised that a repetition of that filly’s behaviour would lead to action being taken against it in future.

LUCRATIVE DAME (P. Gatt) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after lost its position when tightened by AVANELLA (J. Holder), which shifted in.

Subsequent to the event OUR PERFECT WORLD was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 : JAYCO HANDICAP - 1000 metres

Mr. M. Minervini, representing Mr. M. Hyland, the trainer of HIGHBURY, was questioned regarding the late notification of a rider for that gelding. After considering the explanation tendered, Mr. Minervini was advised that Mr. Hyland was fined $50.

HIGHBURY (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the 200 metres LAWSON’S STORM (J. Bowditch), which was attempting to improve into a run inside HIGHBURY (N. Tomizawa), was disappointed as a result of that gelding shifting in.

BUSH OUTLAW was subjected to an endoscopic examination, which revealed low grade internal bleeding. Mr. R. Jolly, the Trainer of the gelding, informed Stewards that it would be his recommendation to the owners that BUSH OUTLAW be eased in its work.

RACE 4 : smoke-free HANDICAP - 1410 metres

For a short distance at the entrance to the straight VERSE LAGO (P. Gatt) was held up.

Inside the 300 metres VERSE LAGO (P. Gatt), was tightened when attempting a tight run between DUA AWALI (D. Tootell), which rolled in, and JEUNE AMOUR (S. Price), which commenced to edge out. Shortly afterwards P. Gatt was forced to check his mount as a result of JEUNE AMOUR shifting out. S. Price was advised that although not entirely responsible for the incident, Stewards would issue a reprimand as, in their opinion, he had shifted ground when insufficiently clear of VERSE LAGO.

From approximately the 200 metres DEBBEN (J. Bowditch) was unable to obtain clear ground.

Near the 200 metres D. Tootell, the rider of DUA AWALI, accidentally dropped his whip. D. Tootell was informed that similar incidents of carelessness may lead to action being taken against him.

VERSE LAGO (P. Gatt) was unable to obtain clear ground over the concluding 100 metres.

RACE 5 : ALCOHOL GO-EASY HANDICAP - 1310 metres

Mr. B. Papazaharoudakis, the trainer of ANOTHER FARE, was questioned regarding the late notification of a rider for that mare. After considering the explanation tendered Mr. Papazaharoudakis was fined $50.

The start of this race was delayed owing to FONNIX dislodging its rider, J. Lyon and returning to the enclosure. Upon being recaptured FONNIX was returned to the start, examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start, however, required some attention from the farrier.

BRINKLEY LASS, which became cast in the gates, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled unfit to start. Acting on that advice, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of BRINKLEY LASS at 3.16 pm.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on BRINKLEY LASS be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 8 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 9 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

LA SUPREMO stood in the gates and missed the start.

After jumping ANOTHER FARE (J. O’Connor) and VANDECLARE (D. Tootell) were slow into stride.

Near the 200 metres SMILINGLY (P. Gatt) rolled out and inconvenienced FONNIX (J. Lyon).

Inside the 100 metres FONNIX (J. Lyon) shifted out and inconvenienced OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa), taking that mare out onto HONOURABLE AMI (H. McKechnie). J. Lyon was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 6 : HONDA HANDICAP - 1460 metres

WINNING SPIRIT (W. Kerford) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out onto BRAVE DECISION (C. Buchiw) taking that gelding out onto KING’S HAVEN (C. Bryant), which shifted out tightening PRIOR MINISTER (N. Tomizawa) onto UNBRIDLED LAD (S. Price) resulting in UNBRIDLED LAD and PRIOR MINISTER continuing to make contact for a short distance.

On entering the straight BRAVE DECISION (C. Buchiw), which was inclined to lay out, commenced to shift out and approaching the 200 metres, shifted out abruptly under pressure.

Approaching the 200 metres SCIATICA (M. Pumpa), which was inclined to shift out and away from BRAVE DECISION (C. Buchiw), shifted out and inconvenienced PALIENTE (J. Holder).

C. Buchiw, the rider of BRAVE DECISION, explained that she had been instructed to ride her mount in a forward position and not to fight the gelding as it was inclined to over-race when being restrained. She stated that in hindsight she may have erred in her riding of BRAVE DECISION in the early stages of the race and after obtaining the lead had preferred not to restrain it more than she had, in consideration of the instructions. Stewards will interview Mr. J. Smith, the trainer of BRAVE DECISION, who had left the course, in respect of his instructions at a later date. BRAVE DECISION was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

UNBRIDLED LAD was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 : BONNETTS HANDICAP - 1310 metres

Shortly after the start ABOVE ALL (J. Bowditch) was inconvenienced by SADLER JOH (P. Gatt), which shifted in.

TO PAY UP (D. Tootell) raced fiercely in the middle stages of the event.

RACE 8 : COLLEX HANDICAP - 1000 metres

UNROCEL TAP (S. Tronerud) and MAYGAZR (J. Lyon) jumped away awkwardly.

HOT FLICKS (J. Bowditch) shifted out on jumping away and tightened BRETON ROSE (C. Lindop) onto RADIANT SOCIETY (J. Holder) taking that gelding out onto FAIRE MONTER (J. O’Connor), which became unbalanced, and laid back resulting in RADIANT SOCIETY being taken back in onto BRETON ROSE, which was obliged to lose its position.
