Bold Reef Set for Another Walk in the Park

A winner of seven of 10 starts - a class above or good placement? A little of both when it comes to the Phillip Stokes-trained Bold Reef, who is shooting for her eighth win but tackles open class for the first time tomorrow.

Bold Reef, despite her excellent record and stunning form, will carry just 54kg - 2kg over the minimum - courtesy of the 3kg claim for stable apprentice Jason Lyon and she looks placed to add to her already impressive record.

The highballing mare not only has weights in her favour but has drawn ideally and will be suited by the tight 1250m inner-track circuit at tomorrow's big twilight meeting at Victoria Park.

"She's done well since her last win, just doing some easy work down at the beach," Stokes said. "She has a few things in her favour - such as the track, the trip and a good alley, and Jason (Lyon) rides her down at the beach as well. My only concern is the heat. She's only a tiny little mare and it's going to be a very hot day. I'll just have to try to keep her settled and hope she doesn't use up a lot of energy before the race."

After tomorrow's assignment, Stokes will send the mare to his father Ron's property at Gawler where she will have a couple of weeks off.

"She's into open class now but the owner would like to breed from her," Stokes said. "I'll give her a freshen up and look for a suitable black-type race over the next month or so."

Bold Reef looks perfectly placed for her first open-company test tomorrow, and is testament to Stokes ability to find the right races for his horses. Although he train a small team, he boasts a winning city strike-rate of almost 40 per cent. He is currently fifth on the metropolitan premiership.
