RACE 1 – HEALY’S CAMEL WINERY TOURS HURDLE - 2700 metres

Mr. K. Elford, Trainer of ROSES AND WINE, which proved reluctant to travel to the barriers, was advised that a repetition of the gelding’s behaviour may lead to action being taken against it.

BAITENHAUSEN (P. Fahy) jumped the hurdle in the vicinity of the 1200 metres awkwardly.

STAR GAMES (T. Balfour) jumped the second last hurdle awkwardly.

J. MacMillan, rider of MONDERWYK, reported the gelding got its tongue over the bit during the race.

When questioned regarding his riding of BAITENHAUSEN from inside the 800 metres, P. Fahy explained he had attempted to ride the gelding in a hands and heels manner. Stewards advised P. Fahy his explanation was noted, however, in future he would be required to exhibit far greater vigour than he did on this occasion.

YOUNG WILLY lost its near hind plate during the race.

Subsequent to the event Mr. S. Gower, Trainer of BAITENHAUSEN, reported the gelding had suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack on return to the Trainer’s stables. Mr. Gower was advised the gelding was now suspended from racing for a period of three months in accordance with ARR 53A.

RACE 2 – HONDA / SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1050 metres

GETTABLE (S. Price) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, taking ZYHEERA (D. Carney) onto DANCING LASS (M. Neilson), resulting in ZYHEERA being hampered.

BELIEVE IN VICTORY (J. O’Connor) jumped away awkwardly.

Inside the 700 metres BENACHI (J. Lyon), which had been inclined to lay out, shifted out and became ungenerous when racing tight inside GETTABLE (S. Price).

In the vicinity of the 200 metres BELIEVE IN VICTORY (J. O’Connor) became held up momentarily when inside BLEVON (B. Claridge), which was inclined to shift about.

RACE 3 – JAYCO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres

Shortly after the start THE STRONGEST LINK (M. Henderson) shifted out and inconvenienced ERRAND (D. Carney).

Inside the 700 metres THE STRONGEST LINK (M. Henderson), when racing tight inside IT’S A GREY (M. Neilson), became ungenerous and shifted out, brushing IT’S A GREY.

Near the 500 metres PARLANCE (C. Buchiw), which was inclined to race greenly when being restrained off the heels of ERRAND (D. Carney), which had been taken out marginally by THE STRONGEST LINK (M. Henderson), shifted in and inconvenienced LANDLOPER (J. Holder), taking that gelding in onto SHADY MONDE (H. Akiyama).

S. Tronerud, rider of KAZAK (NZ), explained that after beginning well, his mount had been reluctant to gallop, and despite his efforts refused to compete. KAZAK (NZ) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly had a lower than expected heart rate, which was consistent with the it not having performed genuinely. Mr. J. Cornell, representing Mr. A. McEvoy Trainer of KAZAK (NZ), was advised that should the gelding perform in a similar manner in future action may be taken against it.

PARLANCE suffered a laceration to the near fore cannon during the race.

RACE 4 – FELTEX CARPETS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1050 metres

MITOBY (B. Claridge) and SOUTHERN MARAUDER (S. Price) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after brushed together.

At the entrance to the straight JUG FULL (C. Bryant) shifted out abruptly, taking SHEZA RIPPA (D. Carney) wider on the course.

WRANGLE, which had been restless in the gates, suffered a haematoma to the near side of its face and bleeding from its near side nostril, which was confirmed by the Veterinary Surgeon.

RACE 5 – EVENTS CORP CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1600 metres

KNIGHT REFLECTOR (C. Buchiw) was slow to jump.

Near the 1300 metres CIELO ROAD (N. Tomizawa) shifted in onto LUCENTIER (S. Tronerud), taking that gelding in onto MOVED (M. Neilson), which was tightened onto GO SPIDER (C. Bryant). As a result MOVED was obliged to steady and lose its position. N. Tomizawa pleaded guilty to a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and suspended from riding for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday 15th March and to expire at midnight on Saturday 22nd March 2003. A period of three meetings.

CIELO ROAD (N. Tomizawa), was inclined to race fiercely in the middle stages of the race.

CIELO ROAD, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

LUCENTIER sprung its near hind shoe during the race and sustained lacerations to its near hind coronet.

RACE 6 – MARSH / SABIS FILLIES & MARES CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

PIETA (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly.

LETA (J. Potter), which was inclined to lay out at the entrance to the straight, commenced to shift out over the concluding 200 metres, resulting in the saddle shifting to the inside approaching the finish.

RACE 7 – PETER ELBERG FUNERALS COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

TRUBRIDGE (J. Potter) knuckled on jumping away and shifted out abruptly onto LINDROS (C. Bryant), resulting in that gelding being tightened onto THE GREAT GATSBY (D. Carney), which was severely hampered.

OUTBACK AUSSIE (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in onto STUBBS (J. O’Connor), which was tightened onto INUIT (Darren Holland). At the same time SCARPIA (B. Claridge) jumped outwards, taking SAN SONATA (NZ) (S. Tronerud) out onto INUIT, which was hampered and lost its position.

THE GREAT GATSBY (D. Carney) raced ungenerously in the early stages of the event.

At the entrance to the straight INUIT (Darren Holland) became disappointed when attempting a run inside SAN SONATA (NZ) (S. Tronerud), which held its racing line.

In the vicinity of the 100 metres INUIT (Darren Holland) became held up.

KELMARK suffered a laceration to the near hind leg during the race.

S. Tronerud, rider of SAN SONATA (NZ), explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding in a similar manner to its previous start, when it raced back in the field and made one run from about the 700 metres. S. Tronerud stated that he attempted to carry out those instructions and due to formation of the field had formed the opinion his best option to obtain an uninterrupted run was to race away from the rail. Stewards advised S. Tronerud the explanation would be noted.

J. O’Connor, rider of STUBBS, explained that after receiving minor interference on jumping away, he was obliged to race outside SAN SONATA (NZ) in the early part of the race, and would have preferred to travel closer to the inside rail. However, due to the positioning of SAN SONATA (NZ), this option was not available unless he had severely restrained his mount. J. O’Connor was advised his explanation would be reported.

RACE 8 – SCHWEPPES DISTANCE CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1800 metres

PROUD RIVER (J. Holder) shifted out on jumping away and inconvenienced FRENCH BELLE (J. Bowditch).

Inside the 500 metres SIKA (C. Lindop) was obliged to steady off the heels of TIMBER COUNTRY (J. Lyon), which rolled in.

Inside the 400 metres KWAITPA (C. Buchiw) was disappointed and forced to steady when attempting a run inside BROTHER WINSTON (K. Louca), which had commenced to weaken and shift in. K. Louca was reprimanded and advised to take greater care when shifting ground in future.

J. Potter, rider of SCENIC SUNSET, reported the filly was inclined to lay out from approximately the 800 metres and continued to lay out until entering the straight.
