Regal Kiss Hoping to Bow Out a Winner

Mother-to-be, Regal Kiss, is hoping to bow out of racing on a high note with a win in this Saturday's $70,000 R A Irwin Stakes at Morphettville.

A brilliant winner of last year's Irwin Stakes, Regal Kiss will be lining up for the last time on Saturday, as she is in foal to Giant's Causeway.

Trained at Morphettville by Leon Macdonald, the Royal Academy four-year-old has been a model of consistency throughout her 17 start career, winning six races with four placings and stake earnings of in excess of $310,000.

Regal Kiss's major victories apart from her 2002 Irwin success include the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial at Rosehill, where she defeated the cream of Australia's sprinting fillies, the Listed Dequetteville Stakes and the Listed Balcrest Stakes at Morphettville.

However, perhaps her best run came in defeat when she finished an unlucky seventh after being slow away and blocked for a run in the 2001 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill behind Ha Ha.

"I think she should have won the Slipper given any luck" Macdonald said. "She's just a super little mare with so much ability but plagued with so many problems. She's the best two-year-old I've trained, nearly the best horse I've trained."

Saturday's R N Irwin Stakes promises to be a great clash, with acceptors including Victorian visitors Bomber Bill, Super Elegant, a last start Caulfield winner, promising fillies Crest Of Gold and Crystal Decanter, as well as top locals Lazing About and Empress Waltz.
