SAJC Committee Member Claims Sexual Discrimination

The Adelaide Advertiser reports today that one of the two South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) female representatives has lodged a complaint with authorities after alleging sexual discrimination and harassment.

Judy Morton, one of the state's most recognisable former breeders and racehorse owners, has filed a report to the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Rachel Hancock reports that the commission has confirmed it received the complaint on January 24 and was currently investigating the matter.

"I just think the whole thing is sad," Ms Morton told Hancock.

"I will do anything for that jockey club but I will not be humiliated," she added.

Morton made history in mid-1996 when she became the SAJC's first female committee member in its long history.

Steve Ploubidis said he had not been advised about the complaint when contacted by the newspaper and he declined to comment to the reporter.

SA Bookmakers' League chief executive John McBain, one of the state's most highly regarded industry members, came out in support of Morton.

"I think she's a lady that has the guts to stand up and say what she thinks and to cop it sweet when she is wrong," he said.

"She's honest, sincere and, from the racing side of things, you couldn't ever doubt her commitment," McBain added.
