Super Sunday - Morphettville Races Report

After riding feature race winners throughout the world Kerrin McEvoy won his first home-state derby when he guided the Peter Snowden prepared Kidnapped to a long head victory in the 2500 metre Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville on Saturday.

After being backed from an opening quote of $5 into a starting price of $4.60 the Viscount fathered Kidnapped, from the Dehere mare Youthful Presence, came from well back and, with McEvoy steering the three year old through on the rails to won Kidnapped beat the Greg Eurell trained Chris Symons ridden Red Colossus $4.80.

The Colin and Cindy Alderson trained Danny Brereton ridden Sea Galleon $14 was a farther half length away third.

Peter Snowden said that Kidnapped will now go for a spell ahead of spring riches.

The combination of Caulfield based mentor Mick Price and Craig Newitt were well pleased with their in victory when Velocitea, who finished second in Robert Sangster Classic last month, went one better to win the SA premier sprint event, the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap of 1200 metres.

From the Felix The Cat mare Cat Shmea and sired by Volksraad, Velocitea $7 was fourth on settling down and, maintaining a forward position, scored a long head victory over the $2-60 favourite Catapulted for Mark Kavanagh and Simon Price. A farther three quarters of a length away third was Very Discreet $13 for Richard Jolly and Dwayne Dunn.

Mick Price said when asked what plans he had for the mare that he would have to consult with the owners to see where we go with her in the immediate future.

Trainer David Hayes and jockey Paul Gatt were the first of only three local combinations to enter the winner’s enclosure on Sunday when the $18 chance Precious Lorraine was the one and three quarter length winner of the listed Oaklands Plate of 1600 metres.

Stepping up in distance from 1200 to 16000 metres and being from Danehill matron Monsoon Wedding the two year old Encosta de Lago filly Precious Lorraine settled well and maintained a mid field position before going on to beat the Lee Freedman charge, the Kerrin McEvoy ridden Exchanges $10. A farther five and a half lengths away was Tale of Thunder $31 for John Thompson and Peter Mertens.

A pleased David Hayes said after the race that Precious Lorraine could possibly be a contender for the Gibson Carmichael Stakes at Flemington on May 15 or she may be bound for the paddock.

Starting for the third time and winning her second race the three year old filly Broadway Harmony gave her Ballarat trainer Darren Weir and rider Sebastian Murphy a two and a quarter length win in the listed 1100 metre Dequetteville Stakes.

From the Rokosz matron No Peace and sired by the United States bred entire Statue Of Liberty, Broadway Harmony settled fourth and went on to record a win over the Peter Morgan mentored Chris Symons ridden Jesse’s Girl $5.50 who finished a half length ahead of Across The Moon $14 for Michael Moroney and Mark Zahra.

The Irish bred stallion High Chaparrol and the Sir Tristram sired mare Queen Caelia provided Fairy Oak, the short neck winner of the 1600 metre Group 3 Auraria Stakes.

Being under the care of Peter Moody at Caulfield and with Luke Nolan as her pilot Fairy Oak was well back in the early stages before thundering home to win.

Starting at $7 Fairy Oak beat the Mick Kent cared for Jason Holder mount El Spark $21. A farther head away third was the $9 returned Legislature $7 for Peter Mertens and John Thompson.

Peter Moody said after the win of the lightly framed Fairy Oak, “I will see how she goes when she returns home and I will decide whether I take her to Brisbane for the June 5 Queensland Oaks or she goes for a spell.”

After being placed at her previous four starts Hanabananah $41 gave her trainer Mark Minervini and jockey Steven King a short half head win in the listed Proud Miss Stakes of 1200 metres.

From the Langfuhr matron Langtryst and fathered by the American bred King Charlemagne Hanabananah, who may have one more preparation before being retired to the breeding barn, beat the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas mentored Chad Lever piloted Impressive Eagle $5.

Another Macdonald and Gluyas cared for runner the Clare Lindop ridden Augusta Proud $6.50 was a half neck away third.

After running second and third in the previous race the co-training partnership of Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and rider Clare Lindop were rewarded when Majestic Music $9 was the short neck winner of the Group 3 Allan Scott Stakes which was run over 1600 metres.

An Al Maher three year old filly from the Royal Academy mare Royal Flute, Majestic Music came from mid field and beat the $4.40 public elect Life To The Full for mentor Robert Smerdon and rider Nicholas Hall. The $9 chance Tagus was a farther two and a half lengths away third for John Thompson and Peter Mertens.

After winning two heats of the Provincial Super Series Faldane $18 gave his trainer Barry Woosnam and jockey Michael Hoppo a half length win in the 1600 metre final.

Sired by the American bred Faltaat from the Danehill mare Dane Gu Li, Faldane came from well back and beat the Jeremy Kenny trained Dwayne Dunn mount In The Chair $6. Street Singer $21 was two and a quarter lengths away third for Daniel Clarken and Wayne Kerford.
