Wednesday's Balaklava Races Report

The one and a quarter length win on the part of two year old filly Our Iridium gave her rider Matthew Neilson the first of three winners and brought up the first leg a double for mentor David Balfour in the opening event of 1300 metres at Balaklava on Wednesday.

Being returned at $41 the Refuse to Bend filly Our Iridium, from the Celestial Bounty mare Dustricia, was a near all the way leader and beat the $1.90 favourite Sister Swank for the training combination of Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and jockey Clare Lindop.

Designer $2-60 was a farther five lengths away third for David Hayes and Paul Gatt.

Jockey Matthew Neilson scored the middle leg of his treble when he rode the Jake Stephens charge Role Of The Dice $8 to a three quarters of a length win in the second race which was run over 1050 metres.

From the Southern Appeal matron Social Cyclone and fathered by Face Value, Roll Of The Dice was well placed during the journey and beat the David Hayes mentored Paul Gatt guided Huvafen $4.  Three quarters of a length away was the third placegetter, the $3.50 favourite and the one time leader The Verge for Daniel Clarke and Dominic Tourneur.

Rider Matthew Neilson brought up win number three when  he steered the Ken Sweeny mentored Edge Off to a two length win in race six which was contested over 1200 metres.

Starting the public elect at $3 and fathered by Racer’s Edge out of the Zoffany matron She Zoff, Edge Off defeated the Simon Casey cared for Simon Price ridden Valoroso $4.20.   Miss Newenham $4 was another one and a half lengths away filling the minor placing for Fred Meuring and apprentice Claudia Lions.

Trainer David Balfour brought up his double when his apprentice Scott Westover rode Henryfield $20 to one and a half length victory in the 1400 metre seventh event.

Sired by the United States bred entire Mr. Henrysee from the Zephyr Zip mare Rosita’s Gem, Henryfield was well placed and beat the John Hickmott prepared Todd Panell ridden Ruling To Win $18. Monde Avion $6 was another long neck away third for Jon O’Connor and apprentice Amy Herrmann.

Having its third start in three years the Kirsty Cordon cared for Simon Price ridden Sweet Franny, the $2.60 punter’s choice, was the one and three quarter length victor of the third race which was contested over 1200 metres.

From Sweet Submission a Mr. Henrysee mare, and fathered by the American bred Fantastic Light, Sweet Franny came with a strong run in the centre of the track in the straight to beat the Phillip Cole cared for Justin Potter ridden Flicker Of Oz $10.  Hollywood Dream also at $10 was a farther length away third for Daniel Clarke and Damien Robinson.

Having the services of Clare Lindop the three year old Dash for Cash filly Blue Simone gave the training partnership of Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas a short head win in the fourth race which was run over 1600 metres.

From the Fuji Kiseki sired Carnatic Blue Simone settled well and led the field at one stage of the race before surrendering that lead but then she fought back in the concluding stages and went on to beat  Lafayette Lady $4.20 for the training and apprentice partnership of David Jolly and Claudia Lions.

The $12 returned Drifting Ice was a farther two and a quarter lengths away taking out the third prizemoney for David Hayes and Paul Gatt.

After receiving a request from jockeys the stewards reduced the distances of race five from 2205 metres to 1600 metres because of a slippery patch just after the turn out of the straight caused by a leaking pipe.

After being well placed the Bianconi sired Whitebait $7, whose dam is the Imperial Prince mare Tidfish, gave trainer David Hayes and rider Paul Gatt a short neck win in the re-distanced event.

Destined for a jumping career Whitebait beat the John Hickmott prepared apprentice Jordon Frew guided Toast To Lenny $18. Goldstinger $4.40 was a farther length away third for Ken Sweeney and Clare Lindop.

Trainer John Croucher and jockey Jeffrey Maund were well pleased with the long neck win of the $3.60 chance Tasteofenergy in the 1400 metre final event.

From the Zeditave mare Sardana and sired by Niello, Tasteofenergy beat Chargeable Vic $3.80 for horse carer Gary Seale and rider Adrian Patterson.  Pick The Face $5 was a farther three quarters of a length away third for David Hayes and Paul Gatt.
