Sunday's Gawler Cup Day Review

Electronic MillionApprentice Jordon Frew scored the biggest win of his career when he guided Electronic Millions, who is trained by his parents Heather and Kevin Frew, to a long neck win in the $40,000 Gawler Cup which was run over 2100 metres at the Gawler Racecourse on Sunday.

Starting at $4.40 the Towkay sired seven year old gelding Electronic Millions, from the Centaine mare Gaysutina, led throughout and beat the David Jolly trained and his apprentice Claudia Lions mount Lennybe, the $3.60 favourite.

Belle Addiction $5 was a farther two and a quarter lengths away third for local trainer Trevor Saltmarsh and Matthew Neilson.

When asked if the race was run to suit Electronic Millions Jordon Frew said, “I was quite happy with the tempo of the event at the 800 metre mark and I thought I had the race won 200 metres from home.”

Frew’s mother Heather said that Jordon had ridden the gelding every day last week and declared him spot on for the Cup after giving him a searching test last Wednesday.

Racing opened when the Mujahid sired Andronica, from Mycedes - an Encosta de Lago mare, was the three and three quarters of a length winner of the 1100 metre opening event.

Starting the $2.25 public elect the Mark Minervini cared for Andronica was guided to victory by Adrian Patterson and will now be given a chance at city company by her trainer.

Andronica beat the locally prepared Tornado Lil $6 for John Macmillan and jockey Simon Price. The $18 returned Special Kate was a farther three quarters of a length away third for another local trainer Graham Fryer and apprentice Tillie Neve.

Apprentice Claudia Lions and trainer William Smart shared in the one and a quarter length win of Marizza’s Dream $4-60 in the 2100 metre second race.

From the Nassipour matron Rose Of Marizza and fathered by Fusaichi Pegasus, Marizza’s Dream was no farther back than second for the entire journey and beat the Ricky Moore trained Dominic Tourneur mount Dirty Harry, the $4.40 equal favourite with the unplaced High’N’Rye. No Half Measures $19 was a farther one and three quarter lengths away filling the minor placing for Paula Trenwith and Clare Lindop.

Jordon Frew brought up the first leg of a double when Impact Point $8 was the half neck winner of race number three which was contested over 1200 metres.

Prepared by John Hickmott the Catbird sired Impact Point, from the Arch Sculptor mare Hopelessly Devoted, held down second position before going on to beat the John Macmillan mentored Matthew Neilson guided Belle’s Star $9. The $3.20 favourite Junood was a neck away third for David Hayes and Ben Claridge.

Trainer Richard Jolly said that he will pick out a mile event in the city for his charge Miss Piggy Bank who was the one and a quarter length winner of the 1500 metre fourth race.

Having the services of Chad Lever the Secret Savings fathered Miss Piggy Bank $4.40 from the Royal Academy mare Fawayez, was a clear last at one point of the event before gaining the lead and going on to beat the $3.60 punter’s choice Seminole for local mentor Gary Searle and apprentice Brodie Petherick.

Another Gawler trained runner Strum $4.20 was a farther nose away third for Darren Magro and Simon Price.

Starting at the odds of $6.50 and sired by the French bred stallion Helissio out of the Vettori mare Florenette, Teairra gave her trainer Daniel J Clarke and jockey Matthew Neilson a three quarters of a length win in the 1700 metre fifth race.

Being well placed Teairra beat Tar A Bata $14 for mentor John Hickmott and jockey Tillie Neve. Just a Giggle $16 was a farther one and a quarter lengths away third for Garry Searle and Adrian Patterson.

Mentor Tony McEvoy trained his second winner since resuming when Foxham was the one and a half length winner of the sixth race which was run over 1500 metres.

A Tale of the Cat gelding from the Centaine mare Centrestream, Foxham was well placed and beat the Jon O’Connor trained Jeffrey Maund ridden Homicide Hank, the $3-30 favourite. A farther half neck away third was Silky Smooth $9 for David Hayes and Omer Ay.

Tony McEvoy said afterwards that Foxham will run in a 1700 metre event at Sandown on Saturday week.

Leading all the way My Uncle Vinnie was the three quarters of a length winner of the 1200 metre final event for trainer Karen Letts-Maund and jockey Brodie Petherick. Starting at $5-50 the Carnegie sired My Uncle Vinnie, from the Mark of Esteem mare Perilla, beat the John Dunn prepared Amy Herrmann ridden Black Whiskey $51.

A farther long neck away third was Call Me Nugget $15 for John O’Loughlin and Tamara Zanker.
