Kittens Wins Hill Smith Stakes

Mark KavanaghMark Kavanagh bounced back from the disappointment of witnessing Whobegotyou being soundly beaten by So You Think in the Yalumba Stakes with Kittens winning the $80,000 Listed Cams Management Hill Smith Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville this afternoon.

The three-year-old filly by Redoute’s Choice left it late to break her maiden status, grinding down the outside to nab Magnifique Soleil right on the line, preventing Darren Weir from training back-to-back winners of the Hill Smith after Keep Control won last year.

Kittens ($4.40) defeated Magnifique Soleil ($1.90 fav) by a half head with Tale Of Thunder ($7) a further 3-1/4 lengths away in third.

Lalla Rookh ($101) added value to first fours while Milestone ($3.60) finished fifth for apprentice Jason Maskiell.

Kavanagh was pleased with the performance and said that Kittens would now race at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“She’s beaten the boys today and it’s a nice race for her,” he said.

“She’ll probably go through the Wakeful and we’ll see how we go from there and whether we go onto the Oaks.”

Kittens has raced five times for a win and two thirds. She has now won in excess of $55,000 in prizemoney.
