Adelaide Cup To Remain In March

CapecoverThe Adelaide Cup will retain its March date with Premier Mike Rann rejecting calls to return the race and its public holiday to its former date in May.

Thoroughbred Racing SA wants to ditch the second Monday in March date as the event has struggled to compete due to the raft of high profile festival events in South Australia during that month.

The Adelaide Cup was moved to March in 2006 because crowds were impacted by bad weather in May.

However Rann says the date won't be moved again.

"Cabinet has just met and we have resolved not to change the Adelaide Cup holiday," the premier said on Monday.

"That was a once off change."

"The disruptive effect of changing it again is too much."

People like having the holiday during March, when Adelaide hosts Clipsal 500, the Fringe Festival, the Adelaide Arts Festival every second year, and the Womad music festival, he said.

"It fits in with the Mad March of events," Rann said.
