Sunday's Gawler Races Review

Tony McEvoy and Simon Price were the power-house when they won six of the eight races at Gawler on Sunday.

The pair scored early when the Encosta de Lago three year old filly Joy Toy, the $2.20 favourite, was the short half head winner of the opening event.

From the Sunday Silence mare Sunday Joy and raced by the Strawberry Hill Syndicate, managed by John Singleton, Joy Toy was a near all the way winner and beat the Todd Pannell ridden Mark Kavanagh prepared Blameitontheboogi $4.40.

Handsome As $8.50 was a farther one and three quarter lengths away third for Adrian Patterson and Roslyn Day.

The McEvoy/Price combination brought up an early double when the $1.70 favourite Sky Raider recorded a four and a half length win in the 2100 metre second race.

A Reset gelding from the Kashani mare Bright Time and owned by a group of Melbourne businessmen, Sky Raider led all the way and beat the Barry Brook mentored Paul Gatt ridden Dumosa $10.

The Ken Sweeney trained Troy Baker ridden Shez A Gaze $9.50 was a farther two and a half lengths away third.

The Queensland owned Grand Ginger, the $2.80 favourite, gave Tony McEvoy and Simon Price a treble in the 1500 metre fourth race.

Racing for the third time and recording his first win the Grandera sired Grand Ginger, from the Canny Lad mare Ginger Meg, held a prominent position throughout and finished full of running to record a two and a quarter length win over Leckey $3.60 for Gawler trainer Sandy Brennan and Adrian Patterson.

Perfectamundo $4.20 was a long neck away third for another Gawler trainer John MacMillan and apprentice Amy Herrmann.

McEvoy said after the event that Grand Ginger will have his next run in city company over 1800 metres.

Simon Price ended the day in fine fashion bringing up win number five when the $2.50 favourite Eikept gave his trainer Tony McEvoy a quartet of winners in the 1200 metre final event.

A Keep the Faith three year old gelding from the Dehere matron Mishere, Eikept was well positioned and beat the Bill Bogarts mentored Michael Hoppo ridden Under The Radar $12.

Mount Me Up $5 was another head away third for Jeffrey Searle and Paul Gatt. Tony McEvoy said after the race that he will look for a suitable 3yo event in the city for the gelding and has not ruled out the possibility of looking at a start in the Queensland Derby for him in June.

Trainer Phillip Stokes and jockey Chad Lever provided the winner of the main race of the day the Kingsford Hotel Barossa Cup when Naratel was the one and a quarter length winner of the 1500 metre event.

Starting at $7 the King of Prussia sired six year old gelding from the Our Poetic Prince mare Princess Kara, Naratel was always handy to the lead and beat the $3.20 favourite Landamman for the husband and wife training duo Kevin and Heather Frew and their apprentice son Jordan.

Fast Frank $5 was a farther two and a quarter lengths away third for Daniel Clarken and his apprentice Lauren Stojakovic.

Raced by the Saddler’s Knife Syndicate headed by Birdsville racing identity David Brook, Naratel will now progress to the Alice Springs Cup of 2000 metres on Monday May 2.

Previously trained by Jarrod McClean and David Hayes the Fusaichi Pegasus sired four year old mare, from the Archway mare Aldarch, was mid field for most of the race before making a late run in the straight to beat the Ken M Knowles trained Michael Hoppo ridden Countess of Tiba $7 by one and a half lengths.

Secret Weekend $9.50 finished a half head away third for local mentor Dan Peverall and rider Wayne Kerford.

Searle said that he will give Athena Pegasua a short let up before bringing her back for distance events during the winter.

Punters suffered a blowout when the $31 chance Ramsgate took out race three which was contested over 1200 metres. Having the services of apprentice Jordan Frew the Jess Giles trained Ramsgate held down a midfield position before sprinting to the lead in the latter stages and defeating King Rodney $6 for the local training combination of Ron and Brett Campbell.

Starting at $6 Junood was another half neck away third for John Hyam and Troy Baker.

Consistent provincial winner Race Memory $5 gave her trainer Ken Sweeney and rider Clare Lindop a three quarters of a length win in the 1200 metre fifth event.

Having her fifty seventh start and recording her seventh win the Racer’s Edge mare Race Memory, from the Snippets matron Recollection, came from a rearward position and beat Sierra Skies $20 for Paula Trenwith and her apprentice Amy Herrmann.

Highland Dancer $7.50 was a farther long neck away third for Gawler trainer John MacMillan and apprentice Jackson Matthews.
