Alcopop Wins Penny Edition

One-time Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop returned to the winners’ list, claiming the $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Trained by Jake Stephens and ridden by Troy Baker, Alcopop ($9) secured victory in the last stride to defeat a gallant Glaneuse ($6) who travelled into the race three wide without cover from the 700 metre mark only to peak on his run late.
Magical Pearl ($21) finished third while Spacecraft ($2.80 fav) finished fourth.
Favourite Dusty Star ($2.35 fav) engaged in a speed dual with outsider Glaze ($151) and both noted front-runners dropped out of contention soon after straightening.
Today was expected to be Alcopop’s final run in South Australia before venturing to Victoria to possibly contest the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Alcopop has now raced 24 times for nine wins and two placings with prizemoney in excess of $570,000.
