Gawler Races Report

The four year old daughter of Flying Spur, Coustellet, from the Vlokstraad mare Mistrale, gave trainer Phillip Stokes and rider Paul Gatt a six and a quarter length win in the opening event of 1700 metres at Gawler on Wednesday.

Being in a class of her own having run second to the Tony McEvoy prepared Birdman at her last start, Coustellet, the $1.55 favourite, settled well and went on to beat the David Halliday trained Jordan Frew ridden Blue Simone$17.

Rhodes to Glory $4 was a farther neck away third for Darwin trainer Kerry Petrick and Adrian Patterson.

Coustellet will have her next run over 2000 metres in the city and then progress to the Listed Birthday Cup of 2000 metres on February 18th.

Supporters of Gary Searle's local stable were in full voice when his charge Ambush Al $5.50 was the one and a half length winner of race two which was contested over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Adrian Patterson the Al Maher sired three year old gelding Ambush Al, from the Catrail mare Tropical Splendour, led throughout and beat the Shane Oxlade prepared Ben Hoppo mount Ordynski's Hill $31.

Circle of Trust, the $2 favourite, was another long head away third for Tony McEvoy and apprentice Jake Toeroek.

Ambush Al will have its next run in a 1500 metre event at Gawler next Wednesday.

After finishing second in the previous race trainer Shane Oxlade found his way to the winner's circle when the Simon Price ridden Real Sharp $5 was the one and a half length winner of race three which was run over 1100 metres.

From the Eagle Eyed mare Sharp Focus and fathered by Real Jester, Real Sharp $5 came five wide with a searching run to beat Foxy Ruby $4.20 for trainer Bill Papazaharoudakis and rider Scott Westover.

The top weight Just Ranger $31 was another half neck away third for the combination of Kevin and Heather Frew and son Jordan.

Picking up a winning ride at the expense of the indisposed Todd Pannell, Adrian Patterson made it a double when he guided Kate's Dream $$3.20 to a half length win in the fourth race which was run over 1500 metres.

Trained by Murray Bridge mentor Colin Baker the Akhadan sired Kate's Dream, from the Dieu D'Or mare Makmore, settled well and, maintaining a forward position, went on to beat the Phillip Stokes prepared Jason Holder ridden Jewel of Johar $4.

Noble Mistress $3.70 was another two lengths away third for Matthew Sayers and Matthew Neilson.

Kate's Dream will now progress to a 1600 metre 0-75 Handicap at Morphettville on Saturday week.

Local trainer Ron Stokes gave Gawler its second winner when the Jason Holder ridden Super Silks was the three quarters of a length winner of race five which was run over 1500 metres.

A $4.20 chance the Dubai Destination sired Super Silks, from the Dream World matron Dream lass, was not very far off the pace for the entire journey and beat Better Ark Up $4 for the combination of mentor Scott Trenowden and rider Matthew Neilson.

Flash Mick was a farther long head away third for Sue Nolan and Clare Lindop.

The half neck win of Nevele Tol gave jockey Adrian Patterson his third winner for the afternoon and local trainer Gary Searle his second in the 2100 metre sixth race.

Sired by Skalato from the Rubiton mare Innovation Lass, Nevele Tol was well placed and went on to beat the Karen Byrnes mentored Paul Gatt ridden Sultan of Speed $3.60.

Master Robbie was a farther one and a half lengths away third for another Gawler trainer Andrew Beswick and jockey Tamara Zanker.

Searle said after the race that Nevele Tol, who he regards as a nice type, will go through his classes.

Tony McEvoy broke a nineteen-run drought when his apprentice Jake Toeroek rode Protector, the $3.20 favourite to a three quarters of a length win in the 1100 metre seventh race.

From the Rory's Jester mare Risky Banter, the Stratum sired Protector came from a mid field position to beat Test Pilot $3.50 for Mark Kavanagh and Matthew Neilson.

Rubilad $4 was a farther one and a quarter lengths away filling the minor placing for David Baylis and Jason Holder.

Darakan $6.50 gave his Murray Bridge trainer Matthew Sayers a half length win in the final event of 1200 metres.

Having the services of Matthew Neilson the Desert Sun sired seven year old gelding, from the Ardoss mare City Ex, Darakan led all the way and defeated Kelport $41 for the combination of David Halliday and Libby Hopwood.

Run Barry Run $31 was another three quarters of a length away third for John Castleman and apprentice Melanie Tyndall.
