RACE 1 – NEIL TANNER MEMORIAL / SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1000 metres

PAGEANT NIGHT (D. Tootell) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 100 metres LEX LUTHOR (Darren Holland) was obliged to ease off the heels of KALA CHARM (T. Barras), which shifted in under riding. T. Barras was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under ARR 137(a) and suspended for a period to commence at midnight 5th March and to expire at midnight 11th March 2003. A period of three meetings.

Correct Weight was delayed to permit S. Price, rider of LA BOISSELLE, to view the official footage over the concluding stages.

RACE 2 – GUNDOOEE AGISTMENT CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1000 metres

Near the 700 metres SOULS (D. Carney) was forced to ease off the heels of RAMEN (J. Maund), which shifted in. J. Maund was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Near the 500 metres SOULS (D. Carney), which commenced to race keenly, clipped the heels of RAMEN (J. Maund).

Near the 300 metres RAMEN (J. Maund) was inclined to shift away from HUG A MUG (S. Price), which shifted out.

RACE 3 – WILLOW POINT WINES HANDICAP – 2200 metres

Near the 800 metres HULA STORM (J. Maund) was obliged to steady off the heels of ACCELERATING (K. Stra), which shifted in. K. Stra was advised of her obligations when shifting ground.

Near the 500 metres SHAMROCK DANCER (Shane Tronerud), which had commenced to weaken, was obliged to steady off the heels of HULA STORM (J. Maund), which shifted in and away from SPAGET (D. Tootell), at the same time as ACCELERATING (K. Stra) rolled out onto SHAMROCK DANCER.

Near the 150 metres B. Claridge, rider of DELEGATE, dropped his whip. B. Claridge was fined $50 for carelessness under ARR 137(a).

RACE 4 – MURRAY COMPUTER & OFFICE SHOP MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 metres

The start of this event was delayed owing to MANIRAQ dislodging D. Carney in the Mounting Enclosure prior to the event. On arrival at the barriers MANIRAQ was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start. Mrs. B. Perry, Trainer of MANIRAQ, was advised that a repetition of its behaviour would lead to action being taken against it.

WEST POINT ACADEMY (D. Tootell) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out onto FURANO (C. Bryant), taking that gelding out onto MANIRAQ (D. Carney), which shifted out, across the running of CRIMSON SEEDLESS (B. Claridge), which lost its position.

Near the 900 metres CRIMSON SEEDLESS (B. Claridge), which was inclined to race keenly, was obliged to steady off the heels of WEST POINT ACADEMY (D. Tootell).

Inside the 300 metres FURANO (C. Bryant) became held up for a short distance.

Near the 100 metres TOAST TO LENNY (Shane Tronerud), which was inclined to shift about under pressure, shifted in onto WHO NOW (M. Neilson), resulting in that gelding being taken in and brushing SERENE PRINCESS (N. Tomizawa).

TOAST TO LENNY lost its off fore plate during the race.

RACE 5 – WILLOW POINT WINES / SABIS FILLIES & MARE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1400 metres

Near the 1300 metres INTERCEPTION (NZ) (P. Gatt) shifted in onto MISS STRESS (M. Neilson), which had commenced to improve to the inside, resulting in that filly being taken in onto GOLDEN MILINA (Shane Tronerud), which was tightened onto STAATRIQ (K. Stra). STAATRIQ shifted in abruptly and hampered KULCURNA (C. Lever). Although not considered entirely responsible for the incident, P. Gatt was advised in future to give riders on the inside the room to which they are entitled. Apprentice M. Neilson was informed that in the Stewards opinion he had contributed to this incident by riding his mount into a position at the expense of other riders.

Near the 1200 metres GOLDEN MILINA (Shane Tronerud) was obliged to steady off the heels of MISS STRESS (M. Neilson), as a result of being tightened by that filly, which had been taken in by INTERCEPTION (NZ) (P. Gatt).

Near the 1100 metres INTERCEPTION (NZ) (P. Gatt) shifted in and tightened MISS STRESS (M. Neilson) onto SMURIFFIC (J. Maund), which became unbalanced for a short distance. P. Gatt was reprimanded and advised in future to take greater care when shifting ground.

Near the 700 metres KOODA POLO (B. Claridge) clipped the heels of MISS STRESS (M. Neilson), which shifted out.

INTERCEPTION (NZ) suffered abrasions to both hind legs during the event.

RACE 6 – MURRAYLANDS SECURITY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 metres

RENDL (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in abruptly, and severely hampered SIMONDE (B. Vale).

Near the 100 metres D. Carney, rider of RENDL, had his whip accidentally knocked out of his hand by J. Maund, rider of OLD SEA SALT.

RACE 7 – BLIGHT & O’NEIL MENSLAND CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1400 metres

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres TERTAIN’S GAMBLE (J. Maund) shifted out abruptly and hampered STYLISH PLAYBOY (J. Bowditch).

Near the 300 metres EVEN SCORE (C. Lindop) became held up for a short distance, when racing inside DUTTON (C. Buchiw).

When questioned regarding his riding of KWA HERENI approaching the home turn and the early stages of the straight, Apprentice J. Lyon explained that as the leaders had set a genuine pace and consequently he had elected to ease to their outside in the vicinity of the 500 metres, so as to avoid being hampered if the leaders weakened. He stated that KWA HERENI had travelled keenly during the race and had improved to the lead under a hold inside the 400 metres. He added that he had felt his mount may have switched off when in front in the straight prior to extending again when joined by the placegetters. Stewards advised J. Lyon this explanation would be reported.

KWA HERENI suffered a minor laceration to its near side hock during the event.

RACE 8 – TAILEM BEND RACING CLUB MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 metres

ZAKNIYA was withdrawn by Stewards at 9.08 a.m., acting on advice from the Trainers Services Centre, that the scratching had been overlooked due to a system malfunction.

DANCIN’ MAX (J. Bowditch), which had been restless in its stall, jumped away very awkwardly.

PRINCE BALETTA (C. Bryant), which had been inclined to lay out, hung out, making the turn into the straight. PRINCE BALETTA was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

Near the 400 metres BALLYSAX (Darren Holland), which was inclined to shift in and away from NADELLA (J. Holder), shifted in and tightened CROWNED SERDAR (J. Maund) onto RANGATAUNGA (J. Lyon), resulting in that gelding being steadied.

Inside the 200 metres FRENCH BELLE (P. Gatt) shifted in abruptly onto NADELLA (J. Holder), taking that filly in onto JAZZY GINA (Shane Tronerud), which was obliged to steady off heels.

SEACOAL LANE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and found to be lame in the near fore leg. Mr. L. Connolly, Trainer of gelding, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to accepting for a future event.

C. Lever, rider of DANCING LIGHTS, reported the mare was inclined to lay in throughout the event. A Veterinary examination of that mare failed to reveal any visible abnormalities.

Race 1:

Mr. G. D. Kennewell, Trainer of the third placegetter REGAL SHAMROCK, informed Stewards on the Monday after racing that filly underwent corrective manipulation to its lower back.
