In the vicinity of the 400 metres BLAZING IMAGE (Darren Holland), when improving inside LEVITE (B. Claridge), was obliged to steady off the heels of TALUSE (C. Lindop), which had commenced to weaken, at the same time as KASHMIR KING (R. Faehr) rolled in, inconveniencing LEVITE.

Inside the 200 metres KALAMAYA (J. Burgess) shifted in under riding onto KINCHEGA (J. Lyon), resulting in that gelding having to be steadied off the heels of KALAMAYA. J. Burgess pleaded guilty to a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and was suspended for a period to commence at midnight Thursday 7th January and to expire at midnight Sunday 12th January 2003. A period of four meetings. In assessing this penalty, Stewards took into consideration that Ms. Burgess had not been charged with Careless Riding since April 1997.

An objection was lodged by Darren Holland, rider of BLAZING IMAGE, 2nd Placegetter against KASHMIR KING (R. Faehr) being declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference in the vicinity of the 400 metres. After considering the evidence taken, viewing the official films and acting on their own observations, Stewards dismissed the objection as they could not be satisfied that the interference suffered by BLAZING IMAGE was fully attributed to KASHMIR KING.

Vale explained that in the vicinity of the 1400 metres he was racing in the three wide position, on the back of SOUTHERN RENEGADE. He stated that shortly after SOUTHERN RENEGADE went forward to sit outside the leader and he had been obliged to race without cover. He said, in his view however, there was good pace in the race and in anticipation of the pace easing, he had elected to allow his mount to stride forward, as he had previously won on the gelding when ridden similarly. Inside the 1000 metres he had become concerned the gelding was inclined to lay in and was not travelling as well as he would have wished. B. Vale was advised that in future he would be required to ride with greater initiative than he had on this occasion.

PUISSANT KING, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to have an irregular heartbeat. Mr. G.
