RACE 1 - THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS TASMANIAN SUPERVOBIS - 2-Y-O HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

KATS CLAUSE (S Snell) jumped awkwardly and inwards at the start and contacted with GENUINE BLONDE (D Pires A). Thereafter, KATS CLAUSE (S Snell) raced green throughout.

Approaching the 600 metres, STORMIN’ FEVER (J Nevin A) when placed awkwardly inside the heels of KATS CLAUSE (S Snell) switched to this filly’s outside.

QUEEN OF EGYPT (S Maskiell) laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

STORMIN’ FEVER (J Nevin A) raced wide on the home turn and into the straight.

A swab sample was taken from the fourth placegetter KATS CLAUSE (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 2 - INGHAM LOVE ‘EM MAIDEN PLATE – 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1100 METRES - 17 RUNNERS

The race-book did not show PRINCESS AVENGER (Trainer Neil Richardson) as wearing blinkers when in fact a Stable Return had been submitted indicating blinkers as part of this filly’s gear. A public announcement was made prior to this event and in addition, a Press Release to this effect was released on Friday, 24 January 2003.

LORD OF THE TURF (K Cook) was slow away at the start, losing one to two lengths.

BYE ALL SEASONS (J Nevin A) jumped in at the start and contacted with MISTELLA (D Keating A) and as a result GOLD SEQUEL (B McCoull) was inconvenienced and clipped the heels of MISTELLA.

Approaching the 1000 metre mark, OUR DASHING DANE (P Michaelides) who had a tendency to lay in, shifted in and inconvenienced JOIN THE QUEUE (K Dodge) for a number of strides.

At about the 700 metre mark, OUR DASHING DANE (P Michaelides) who had continued to lay in, shifted in and brushed with SCREENPLAYER (C Burt).

Approaching the 600 metre mark SCREENPLAYER (C Burt) became crowded in a tightly bunched field to the outside of HEARTLESS (S Snell) and PRINCESS AVENGER (D Parish) to its outside who had shifted ground inwards slightly at the time. Shortly thereafter SCREENPLAYER dropped back in the field and as a result CALAMITY ROSE (W Stacey A) who was following, had to be steadied by its rider. Notwithstanding the fact that Stewards considered Jockey P Michaelides (OUR DASHING DANE) had fallen short of contravening AR-137(a), Stewards showed Jockey Michaelides the video footage of the early part of this race and advised him that he must ensure that he allows more room for his fellow riders when crossing the field in future.

Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening, LORD OF THE TURF (K Cook) when attempting a run between IAM IAM (D Pires A) and SCREENPLAYER (C Burt) had to be restrained out over the heels of SCREENPLAYER when that horse shifted in marginally and was giving ground.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SCREENPLAYER (Trainer Royston Carr) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 - TATTERSALL’S CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES - 17 RUNNERS

Stewards acceded to a request from Trainer Mr Troy Blacker (deputizing for Trainer Mr G E Blacker) that Jockey Luke Currie ride HIDDEN MOMENT one and a half kilograms overweight.

PAINTED RHIARI (J Borrett), HIDDEN MOMENT (L Currie) and ALLEY CHAT (S Snell) were all slow to begin.

Shortly after the start, MESTINOS (S Maskiell) who had commenced to over-race, contacted with CRUDONI (L Goodrick) for a number of strides.

Shortly after straightening ROMANTIC SCORE (B McCoull) switched to the outside of MOSSANTO (D Parish) to obtain a clear run and in doing so inconvenienced MESTINOS (S Maskiell) who was making ground to its outside which resulted in this horse being steadied by its rider. Jockey B McCoull was shown the video of the race and advised to take far greater care in future when shifting ground. As a result of this incident MESTINOS (S Maskiell) contacted with POPULAIRE (C Kingston). Jockey McCoull was shown the video footage of the incident and advised to take more care in future.

RACE 4 - MOORILLA 1000 GUINEAS - 3-Y-O- FILLIES – NO CLAIMS - SET WEIGHTS – LISTED – 1600 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

STRATHMORE LUCK (J Nevin A) laid in under pressure in the home straight.

VENUS A GO GO (D Pires A) laid in over the concluding stages and had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of ALL STEALTH (W Hokai) just prior to the finishing line.

Apprentice Nevin was examined by the Club’s Doctor following the running of this race and subsequently stood down from his remaining riding engagements due to an injury to his right hand.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race ALL STEALTH (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 5 - INGHAM JOCKEY CLUB CUP – 2200 METRES – 15 RUNNERS

Stewards acceded to a request from Trainer Mr John Blacker that Jockey Luke Currie ride UNDERTAKE one kilogram overweight.

US AND MAKA (D Keating A) laid in throughout in the home straight which resulted in Apprentice Keating having to stop riding his mount and straighten on a number of occasions.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BRORAMA STAR (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race US AND MAKA (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 6 - THETOTE.COM.AU HOBART GUINEAS 3-Y-O– NO CLAIMS - SET WEIGHTS – LISTED – 2100 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey B McCoull, the rider of DREAM QUEST, placed second by the Judge, wished to view the official photo. There was some further delay as a result of technical difficulties experienced by the staff manning the photo finish. After viewing the photo, correct weight was announced and the Judge’s placings stood.

DREAM QUEST (B McCoull) blundered at the start.

HIGHCLERE (S Snell) and CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) made contact shortly after the start and as a result CONFABULATOR became crowded for galloping room to the inside of HIGHCLERE and was forced to ease.

At about the 1900 metre mark HIGHSTRUNG (K Moore) shied inwards away from BIRLE’S GAMBLE (S Maskiell) and inconvenienced CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) for a number of strides. Shortly thereafter BIRLE’S GAMBLE shifted inwards slightly and HIGHSTRUNG (K Moore) again shied in and away from BIRLE’S GAMBLE which resulted in CONFABULATOR having to be checked by its rider. CONFABULATOR then threw its head up in the air and as a result lost its position. After inquiring into the incident, Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider as they were of the opinion that the incident was a result of horse manners.

On return to scale it was reported that KINGDOM OF STARS (S Cahill) had cast an off-fore plate in running.

Stewards spoke with Trainer B Lomasney in relation to the saddling of HIGHSTRUNG for today’s event. He was advised that he is to ensure that in future this horse is presented in its correct stall within the confines of the race-course.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BIRLE’S GAMBLE (Trainer G White).

RACE 7 - TATTERSALL’S STAKES - NO CLAIMS - WFA - LISTED - 1200 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

A post-race veterinary inspection of FLEWELLA (Trainer John Blacker) revealed the mare to have a laceration to her near hind fetlock. Trainer Blacker was advised that FLEWELLA must undergo a veterinary inspection before its next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race KING FLYER (Trainer John Luttrell).

RACE 8 - AUSTRALIA DAY CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 16 RUNNERS

Jockey S Maskiell was dislodged from DON SERENE en route to the barriers. The gelding then galloped for some distance before being recaptured by the Clerk of the Course in the chute at the 1600 metres. DON SERENE was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon at the barriers and passed fit to take its place with the field.

DRY WHITE (W Hokai) broke through the front of the gates and on return to the barriers, was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who passed the mare fit to take its place in the field.

Jockey W Hokai was questioned regarding the apparent disappointing performance of DRY WHITE in today’s event. He explained to Stewards that this horse stood awkwardly in the gates, missed the start and thereafter failed to muster early speed. In addition he felt something was amiss with this mare in the early part of this event. He stated that after entering the home straight, the mare did respond to some extent and made some ground on the field. Stewards, after viewing the video footage of the race, advised Jockey Hokai that he is to ensure that in future he reports matters that may have affected his horse’s performance on returning to scale. Stewards also advised him that in cases where a horse is showing some response notwithstanding the fact that it had earlier raced in a manner which raised concern in his own opinion, that he is to ride the horse in his normal manner with more vigor than he had done on this occasion.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DRY WHITE (Trainer Gary White) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of TACAMO (Trainer Leon Wells) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

GENERAL

Pre-race blood samples were taken from the following horses in Race 5 – Ingham Jockey Club Cup: PAPPA BEAR, MARETTE, UNDERTAKE, CAITLIN’S HOPE, SUPER CLASSIC, OTAKIMAN

Jockey Luke Currie was fined $50 under AR-120(b) for accepting rides on today’s race programme (Race 3 – HIDDEN MOMENT : Race 5 – UNDERTAKE) and then subsequently being found to be overweight.

Jockeys at today’s racemeeting expressed their concerns in respect to safety regarding the new raised presentation area in the mounting yard. Stewards have undertaken to address the matter with the Club.

Jockey Phil Michaelides tendered a medical certificate which declared him fit to fulfill his duties at today’s racemeeting.

Apprentice David Keating tendered a Work Cover Certificate of Capacity which declared him fit to fulfill his duties. He also advised that his Master wished to place him in the care of Trainer John Luttrell for today’s racemeeting.

Trainer Mr G E Blacker advised Stewards that Trainer Mr Troy Blacker will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his runner, HIDDEN MOMENT at today’s race meeting.

Stewards opened and concluded an inquiry today into an incident in the TRC’s mounting yard on 12 January 2003 after Race 6. After taking evidence from the Gate Attendant, Steward Mr W M Harris and Trainer Mr Ian Hay, Stewards reminded Mr Hay in the strongest terms of his obligations as a Trainer in his actions towards officials in the future.
