CALANTE LAD (R Hanby A) proved fractious in the barriers and as a result was slow to begin.

DARING QUEST (C Burt) and TARNI ROSE (T Atkin) both had a tendency to lay in in the straight.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race LILAC SKY (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 2 - O’KEEFE’S HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS
SET WEIGHTS - 1550 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

BOLD DIP (Trainer Len Dixon) was a late scratching at approximately 9.15 am by order of Stewards. It was established that DON SERENE (Trainer Michael Trinder) in Race 1 had inadvertently been given as a scratching when this horse was in fact a starter. BOLD DIP was in fact a scratching on Friday afternoon, 08/08/2003, at 1.57 pm. It should also be noted that as soon as Stewards became aware of the inadvertent scratching of DON SERENE, the matter was corrected by the Race Club at approximately 8.35 am.

CALL ME DIGGER (E Chan A) was slow away.

BLUE LANI (S Maskiell) was held up for a number of strides rounding the home turn.

BE WHY OH (C Kingston) laid in in the straight.

Stewards questioned Jockey C Kingston (BE WHY OH) regarding his riding instructions. He stated that he was given no specific instructions and was told to either race the horse forward if the horse jumped well or settle back and race where he felt comfortable. He further stated that when he jumped, the horse was a little timid and he found himself behind WESTELLE (L Goodrick) and elected to take up a position behind the field. When asked about this gelding’s response in the straight, he stated that the gelding responded well but added that the reason he did not improve his position in the early and middle stages was to avoid racing wide. Stewards noted his explanation.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BE WHY OH failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 - LILS SUPERVOBIS (TAS) 3-Y-O MAIDEN PLATE
SET WEIGHTS - 1205 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

RACE 4 - RACEHORSE OF THE YEAR DINNER CLASS 1 HANDICAP
1205 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

SEARCH WEST (P Michaelides) was a late scratching at 1.41 pm by order of Stewards when the gelding proved difficult to load and as a result barrier staff were unable to load the gelding into its barrier stall. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on SEARCH WEST (5/4) prior to 1.41 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 1.41 pm to be paid less forty five cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and twenty five cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket. As a result, the start of this race was delayed approximately one to two minutes. Trainer Rodney Seymour was advised that in view of SEARCH WEST’s behaviour and history, he is to trial, during which he is to load into the barriers in a satisfactory manner, before he will next be allowed to start in a race.

BARNWELL (J Borrett) broke down in the pull up area after finishing this event. The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had bowed a near foreleg tendon. Trainer David Cousins was advised that a veterinary certificate must be tendered prior to the gelding’s next race start. As a result, correct weight was delayed for a short while. Jockey Borrett was accompanied by a Steward to the scales where she was weighed in at the correct weight.

RACE 6 - CARRICK PLATE HANDICAP – 1550 METRES
8 RUNNERS
