RACE 1 - RAINE & HORNE INTERNATIONAL MAIDEN PLATE 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS
1100 METRES – 17 RUNNERS

The racebook failed to indicate Jockey K Lewis as the rider of BALMY. An announcement was made to this effect, prior to the start of the event.

Apprentice David Keating was spoken to by Stewards in relation to him being unable to claim only half a kilogram of his allowance on HELLO HEAVEN and advised him that they expect him to claim a larger portion of his allowance in future.

Apprentice David Pires, the rider of STRATHMORE LUCK, pleaded guilty to a charge under LR-19(h)(iii), the terms of the charge being that he was unable to claim any portion of his allowance when weighing out to ride this filly. He was fined the sum of $50.

Jockey P Michaelides pleaded guilty to a charge under AR-120(b), the terms of the charge being that after being declared and having accepted the ride on MISTELLA in this race, he was found to be overweight. Jockey Michaelides was fined the sum of $150. In the circumstances, Stewards granted permission for Jockey Michaelides to ride this filly one kilogram over the weight allotted to it.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Stewards viewed the video of the start to establish whether BALMY (K Lewis) had been denied a fair start. After viewing the video, Stewards declared this horse to be a starter and announced correct weight. It was established that BALMY reared as the gates opened and as a consequence was slow away, losing about two lengths.

BALLY QUI (L Balding) raced onto the heels of runners in front shortly after the start and then threw its head up and raced fiercely for some distance. Shortly thereafter, BALLY QUI shifted out and carried HIGHSTRUNG (K Sanderson) and LAKE PENAH (C Kingston) wider on the track.

At about the 600 metre mark PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) when electing for a run closer to the rail, was momentarily steadied off the heels of SHANTLE (S Maskiell).

HELLO HEAVEN (D Keating A) had a tendency to over-race in the early stages of the event.

Leaving the 500 metre mark, BEAR’S SCENE (K Dodge) became crowded for galloping room and had to be checked by its rider when MINNIE MOUSQUITO (M Hamilton A) shifted in. At the same time PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) shifted ground outwards slightly. As no one rider could be held responsible for the interference suffered by BEAR’S SCENE (K Dodge), Stewards took no direct action other than to remind Apprentice Hamilton, the rider of MINNIE MOUSQUITO, that she is to ensure that she keeps her mounts on a straight course at all times.

Shortly after straightening, BEAR’S SCENE (K Dodge) was again held up for a clear run behind PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) and MINNIE MOUSQUITO (M Hamilton A) and had to switch to the inside of PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) to obtain clear running.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BALLY QUI failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race RILEY REDWING (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 3 - RAINE & HORNE SUPERVOBIS ALEXANDRA PLATE 2-Y-O COLTS & GELDINGS – SET WEIGHTS
900 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

BEAMISH RED (S Snell) and RADAR ROCKET (M Hamilton A) made contact shortly before the winning post when BEAMISH RED (S Snell) shifted outwards and RADAR ROCKET (M Hamilton A) shifted in under pressure.

A post-race veterinary inspection of RADAR ROCKET (Trainer Jack Green) revealed the colt to be shin sore. Trainer Jack Green will be advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered prior to the colt’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BRAINPOWER (Trainer T Young).

RACE 4 - RAINE & HORNE KINGSTON CLASS 1 HANDICAP
1100 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

The racebook failed to indicate Jockey K Lewis as the rider of DEVON’S BOY. An announcement was made to this effect, prior to the start of the event.

BLETCHINA was inspected at the barriers by the Club’s veterinary surgeon after the filly was kicked on the near-side hindquarters, and passed fit to take its place with the field.

1400 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

CAITLIN’S HOPE (D Pires A) broke through its barrier gate after being loaded and had to be re-loaded.

Rounding the home turn shortly before straightening MISLAID (D Keating A) was held up for a clear run for a number of strides behind CREIGHTON (NZ) (K Dodge) and METEOR MAN (NZ) (C Kingston) and thereafter shortly after straightening METEOR MAN (NZ) when attempting a run between CREIGHTON (NZ) and BETTER THINK (J Borrett), was inconvenienced when CREIGHTON (NZ) shifted out slightly and had to be eased by its rider. As a result MIDLAID had out to switch to the inside of METEOR MAN (NZ) to obtain clear running.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race CREIGHTON (NZ) (Trainer Neil Richardson).

A post-race veterinary inspection of THE SPUNK failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 - RAINE & HORNE HOBART CLASS 4 HANDICAP
1600 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

Jockey S Snell was struck in the face by HIGHCLERE on the way to the barriers. Jockey Snell was examined by the on-course ambulance staff who declared him fit to take his ride on HIGHCLERE in this event. Stewards advised Jockey Snell that he is to present a medical certificate declaring him fit to ride before he resumes riding in track work, trials or races.

At about the 500 metres, PAPPA BEAR (S Quilty) had to be checked off the heels of DISGUISE THE EYES (P Michaelides) who compounded badly and dropped back in the field. As a consequence PAPPA BEAR had to switch to the inside of this gelding to obtain a clear run.

Approaching the 200 metre mark, NOT ALL OVER (L Balding) shifted in slightly and carried WEST CLASSIC (J Borrett) inwards slightly. As a result SUBTLE ‘N’ SLY (L Goodrick) racing to her inside, was momentarily inconvenienced. Race 7 – Post Billpay Class 2 Handicap – 1920 metres – 6 runners

Stewards inquired into a report made by the trainer of CALL ME DIGGER, Mr Douglas Brazendale. Mr Brazendale reported to Stewards that it was his opinion that this gelding was not ridden to instructions and consequently was not run on its merits. Mr Brazendale stated that his instructions were for this gelding to take up a forward position and for Jockey Michaelides to allow the horse to stride freely. When questioned, Jockey Michaelides stated that as a result of this gelding being tardily away at the start and this coupled with the fact that runners on his inside were being ridden forward, he was unable to take up a forward position. Thereafter, at the crossing at about the 1800 metre mark, he found himself three deep and elected to take a seat behind BADGER’S RETREAT (K Dodge). Jockey Michaelides was of the opinion that if he had encouraged his mount at this point to go forward, he would have found himself four to five deep on the turn and this, in his opinion, would have been detrimental to the gelding’s chances. After considering the evidence by both parties and after viewing the video footage of the race in question, Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey Michaelides may not have ridden to instructions on this occasion, however, they were satisfied that there was sufficient reason that prevented Jockey Michaelides from riding to instructions. It was Stewards’ view that no action be taken in this matter as they could not establish that this gelding had not been ridden on its merits.
