* Apprentice David Keating advised he would not be able to fulfill his engagements due to a fall on Friday 17/1/03 on the mainland.

** Jockey S Snell was stood down suffering from a severe headache following the running of the event, and was advised by Stewards he must present a medical certificate of fitness prior to riding in trackwork, trials or races.

Master Clarry Connors (Victoria) advised Apprentice Michelle Allen would be in the care of Trainer Patricia Quarrell for today’s race meeting.

Trainer Royston Carr advised Trainer Trevor Hitchens was in charge of his runner US ONLY at today’s race meeting.

RACE 1 –SHAW CONTRACTING MAIDEN PLATE– 2100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) jumped awkwardly at the start and contacted with TERVORT (K Ring).

TERVORT (K Ring) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages of the event.

SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) had to be eased off the heels of FANTA’S LUCK (C Burt) at about the 700 m mark when this mare commenced to give ground. As a result of this RUTHAIN (J Nevin (a)) who was following had to be steadied by its rider, shifted out and contacted with DELFINO (B McCoull)

At about the 700m mark FLY GEORGIE (S Snell) shifted out and contacted with WESTELLE (L Goodrick).

Approaching the home turn SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) again had to be checked off the heels of CHARZARD (C Kingston) when this horse commenced to give ground and as a result SQUIRE MOOR shifted outwards and inconvenienced LIBERAL LOVER (D Pires (a)) and SONAR DREAM (W Stacey (a)) to its outside.

SONAR DREAM (W Stacey (a)) shifted in under pressure approaching that 150m mark and brushed with DELFINO (B McCoull).

RACE 2 –LILS MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 1) – 1100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

PRINCE SALEM (S Tsaikos) was slow away at the start.

Jockey B McCoull was found guilty of a charge under AR 137 (b) the particulars of the charge being that whilst riding LANGKAWI he failed to ride this filly out to the end of the race over the concluding stages of the event. Jockey McCoull was fined the sum of $100.00. In coming to this decision Stewards took into account that this filly did have a tendency to lay in in the straight, but notwithstanding this fact Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey McCoull could have ridden the filly more vigorously over the concluding stages. Jockey McCoull has the right of Appeal.

A post race Veterinary inspection of LANGKAWI revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 –HALLAMS WATERFRONT RESTAURANT MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 2) – 1100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

SMART SIGNAL (K Cook) jumped out and contacted with QUICK AS A BLINK (K Moore) at the start.

SUNJOY (K Dodge) threw its head up at about the 1000m mark and raced ungenerously for some distance thereafter.

ROSIE’S VAIN (M Allen (a)) and CHARMING PRETENDER (B McCoull) brushed shortly after the start when CHARMING PRETENDER (B McCoull) shifted in slightly. Shortly thereafter ROSIE’S VAIN shifted out and contacted with CHARMING PRETENDER resulting in ROSIE’S VAIN becoming unbalanced for a number of strides. Thereafter ROSIE’S VAIN jumped the crossing at about the 800m mark.

RACE 4 –TOM G JOHNSTON SUPERVOBIS TWO-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP – 1100 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

MANCHA (C Kingston) was slow into stride.

WEST EXIT (J Nevin (a)) raced greenly throughout.

Approaching the 600m mark GEHENNA (S Snell) shifted out when placed awkwardly on the heels of BRAINPOWER (S Maskiell) and carried MANCHA (C Kingston) a little wider on the track.

Shortly after straightening NICKY SUE (D Pires (a)) switched out to obtain a clear run and in doing so contacted with MANCHA (C Kingston) to its outside.

A post race Veterinary inspection of MANCHA revealed this gelding to be short in front. Stewards advised Trainer Gary White a Veterinary Certificate of fitness was required prior to this horse’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event GEHENNA (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 5 –TASMANIAN TURF CLUB LIFE MEMBERS CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

JUST LU (W Stacey (a)) was slow away at the start

Approaching the 1200m metres CLEVER JEEL (C Kingston) had to be steadied off the heels of COMICS (K Dodge).

Leaving the 600m mark MOUVOIR (S Snell) shifted outwards and carried LICAM LACAL (L Goodrick) out on to BILLIE THE DRILLER (S Tsaikos) resulting in these two horse making contact and BILLIE THE DRILLER becoming unbalanced for a number of strides. Stewards severely reprimanded Jockey Snell (careless riding AR 137 (a)) and advised him in the strongest terms that he is to ensure at all times that he keeps his mounts on a straight course and in the event he shifts ground he does so without causing any inconvenience to his fellow riders.

Approaching the home turn CLEVER JEEL (C Kingston) shifted in slightly, carrying AERIAL PURSUIT (D Parish) inwards resulting in AERIAL PURSUIT becoming crowded for galloping room. At the same time DEVON RELAY (K Cook) racing to the inside and ahead of AERIAL PURSUIT shifted out after making contact with ISLE OF EASE (M Allen (a)) to its inside. DEVON RELAY then contacted with AERIAL PURSUIT and became unbalanced. Stewards reprimanded Jockey Kingston (careless riding) and reminded Jockey Allen of her obligations when shifting ground

WINGS OF JADE was held up for a clear run from approximately the 350m mark to the 100m mark.

On return to the mounting yard Trainer Bill Ryan advised Stewards BILLIE THE DRILLER (S Tsaikos) had cast its near front shoe in running.

Stewards spoke to Apprentice W Stacey regarding his use of the whip whilst riding JUST LU and was reminded of the Rules of Racing relating to the use of the whip when a horse is out of contention, and showing no response to the whip.

A post race Veterinary inspection of DEVON RELAY revealed the gelding had sustained superficial lacerations to the back of both hind legs.

RACE 6 –CITY OF LAUNCESTON –1600 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Stewards spoke to a number of riders in relation to the tactics adopted during the running of this race. After noting their comments and viewing the video of the race and having scrutinised the betting sheets, Stewards could find nothing untoward.

SINODAL had a tendency to lay in in the straight and as a result Apprentice D Pires had to stop riding on two occasions to straighten his mount.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event MR SOHO (Trainer Mick Burles).

RACE 7 –THE MALUA CLUB STAKES –1600 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Stewards reprimanded Trainer Mark Ganderton for presenting his horse SILK ‘N’ ROSES late in the mounting yard.

At about the 700m mark MONDI (M Allen (a)) threw its head up in the air and raced ungenerously thereafter for some distance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of event BUNDALAGUAH (Trainer D Pires (a)).

RACE 8 – CARLTON DRAUGHT CLASS 6 HANDICAP–2100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

NOUTURN (L Goodrick) jumped awkwardly at the start.

Shortly after the start UNDERTAKE (K Sanderson) shifted in abruptly and contacted with CANWAL (S McFerran) to its inside.

BADGER’S RETREAT (K Dodge) pulled hard in the early stages.

RACE 9 – AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

At about the 100m mark Apprentice W Stacey took hold of his mount (SCENTIAN BELLE) and switched out over the heels of ALWAYS SLICK (K Ring) when this mare shifted inwards slightly. As a result of this BOMBAY BOY (C Burt) who was following had to be steadied by its rider. Jockey Ring, the rider of ALWAYS SLICK was reminded of his obligations and advised to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

GENERAL

Trainer Ken Dixon advised Stewards that on return to stable after this horse’s last run he ordered a blood test of JOHNY GUM ROL, the result of which indicated JOHNY GUM ROL had a virus which Trainer Dixon believed had affected its performance.
