Trainer Craig Conron advised Stewards that his Apprentice David Keating would be in the care of Trainer Terry Roles from 6th October 2002 to 13th October 2002.

Trainer Robert Waymouth advised Stewards that his Apprentice Rowan Waymouth would be in the care of Trainer Royston Carr at today’s racemeeting.

Trainer William Ryan advised Stewards that Mr Rick Currie would be in charge of Trainer Ryan’s runners at today’s racemeeting.

RACE 1 – VON BIBRA MOTORS MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 1) – 1400 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

LUCKY DALE (Leah Goodrick) pulled its off fore shoe in the mounting yard and had to be reshod by the farrier.

Trainer Graeme McCulloch was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club colours on HAZELHURST.

The racebook incorrectly showed VANDELLA to be wearing blinkers when in fact a gear change had been made prior to acceptances. A public announcement was made to this effect prior to the running of the event.

Stewards inquired into the reasons for the late arrival of TAME A TIGER into the saddling paddock. Stewards found Trainer Patricia Quarrell guilty of a charge under LR 35 (c) and fined Trainer Quarrell the sum of $100.00. Trainer Quarrell has the right of Appeal.

Shortly after the start DENON (L Balding) had to be checked off the heels of CLIFTON BELLE (S McFerran). It was established that CLIFTON BELLE shifted in slightly shortly after the start, at the same time DENON when being restrained over-reacted and threw its head up. Stewards reminded Jockey McFerran of her obligations when shifting ground.

Stewards questioned Jockey S McFerran regarding her riding instructions on CLIFTON BELLE. Jockey McFerran stated that she was to race from a handy position, was able to do so, and once she turned for home the mare responded under strong hands and heels riding. When questioned about why she refrained from using the whip in the straight s Jockey McFerran stated that this mare in her opinion does not find any extra when being encouraged by the whip and as a result she elected to continue to ride hands and heels to the line. Stewards noted Jockey McFerran’s explanation.

A post race Veterinary inspection of TIPTON revealed the gelding had been galloped on and sustained minor lacerations to the outside of the near hind leg.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event HUTTON (Trainer Rex Harris).

RACE 2 –DOHERTY’S CRADLE MOUNTAIN HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 2) – 1400 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

FYNDARN FLYER (K Moore) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

DAZZLING VINTAGE (S Snell) was held up for a number of strides at about the 200m mark and thereafter had to switch out over the heels of PLATINUM SONG (B McCoull) and FEENISH (C Burt) to obtain a clear run.

RACE 3 – ST LUKES PRIVATE HOSPITAL THREE-YEARS-OLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 6 RUNNERS

STIHLMAC (K Dodge) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

ZEQUEST (P Michaelides) jumped awkwardly at the start and cast an off hind plate in running. Thereafter ZEQUEST (P Michaelides) laid in in the straight and as a result Jockey Michaelides had to stop riding on a number of occasions to straighten his mount.

RACE 4 – B & E LIMITED HANDICAP – 2100 METRES – 4 RUNNERS

ALMOST SPRING (S Quilty) made contact with the running rail at about the 800m mark.

ALMOST SPRING (S Quilty) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

RACE 5 – CAPTAIN MARINE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 2100 METRE – 9 RUNNERS

Approaching the 1800m mark PINTERRY NOBLE (S Quilty) became crowded to the inside of VANTAGGIO (S Snell) when this horse was carried inwards slightly by BADGER’S RETREAT (K Dodge) who commenced to throw its head up in the air and shift in slightly.

Shortly after the start both DARING QUEST (C Burt) and O’CONNOR STREET (B McCoull) commenced to over-race and were difficult to restrain by their respective riders. Thereafter approaching the turn at the 1800m DARING QUEST shifted out to avoid the heels of RUSSIAN SPY (D Keating (a)) and immediately thereafter shifted inwards which resulted in BADGER"S RETREAT (K Dodge) becoming crowded to it’s inside and having to be checked by its rider. Jockey Burt the rider of DARING QUEST was shown the video and advised by Stewards to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

RUSSIAN SPY (D Keating (a)) blundered at approximately the 600m mark.

Rounding the home turn just prior to straightening BADGER’S RETREAT (K Dodge) shifted out to obtain a clear run and in doing so carried VANTAGGIO (S Snell), DARING QUEST (C Burt) and PINTERRY NOBLE (S Quilty) wider on the track. Jockey Dodge the rider of BADGER’S RETREAT was shown the video was advised by Stewards to take far greater care when shifting ground to obtain clear running in future.

RACE 6 – AUTOBARN FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

FAST RIDE (R Bradley (a)) blundered at the start.

DONNA MAJELLA (C Kingston) shifted in slightly rounding the home turn and brushed with BORNLYTA (R Waymouth (a)).

LITTLE EM (L Balding) who was laying in shifted ground over the concluding stages. At the same time PASIELLES (C Burt) shifted out under pressure. As a result these two horses came together over the concluding 50m of the event, made contact, resulting in Jockey Burt becoming unbalanced. In the process Jockey Burt struck this horse forward of the shoulder with the whip on approximately three occasions. After inquiring into this incident Stewards took no action against Jockey Burt as it was clear it was not her intention to strike the horse with the whip forward of the shoulder, but that this action was as a result of her becoming unbalanced and crowded for room to her outside.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SEONA revealed that this gelding had bled from both nostrils. Trainer G E Blacker was advised of the provisions of AR 53A (4) and SEONA may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two (2) months and it may not start in any race for a period of three (3) months effective 6/10/02, whereafter it is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event SCENTIAN BELLE (Trainer Garry Glover).

RACE 7 – ST LUKES HEALTH CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

KENYAN (L Goodrick) was accidentally struck over the head at about the 100m mark by the whip by D Pires (a)) the rider of SUBTLE ‘N’ SLY.

RACE 8 – WALKER, YOUNGMAN & DIXON CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

No report.

RACE 9 – ROTARY CLUB OF CENTRAL LAUNCESTON COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 2 – 1200 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

TRUE CLASSIC (L Goodrick) jumped outwards at the start and contacted CANWAL (K Moore).

Leaving the 800m mark STORM YACHT (S Maskiell) shifted out slightly and brushed with TROIS GARCONS (K Sanderson) to its outside.

Approaching the home turn BICAPOBLUE (C Kingston) was held up for a number of strides and had to switch to the outside of PETER GUN (C Burt) to obtain clear running.

Approaching the home turn TRUE CLASSIC (L Goodrick), TIME TO LEAD (B McCoull) and SPRINGFIELD MAN (L Balding) became crowded for galloping room in a tightly bunched field. As a result TIME TO LEAD became buffeted between TRUE CLASSIC and SPRINGFIELD MAN.

A post race Veterinary inspection of PONTOON revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A post race Veterinary inspection of GEEZER revealed no obvious abnormalities.

GENERAL

Stewards Inquiry held 3rd October into an incident at Longford Training Centre on 25th September 2002

Jockey S Snell pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 83 (a), the terms of the charge being that on the 25/9/02 at the Longford Racecourse he misconducted himself when engaging in verbal abuse towards Mr A Groves. Jockey Snell was fined the sum of $200.00.

Mr A Groves was found guilty of a charge under AR 175 (a), the terms of the charge being that on the 25/9/02 at the Longford Racecourse he

  1. Acted in an improper manner by verbally abusing and threatening Jockey S Snell
  2. Attempted to physically dislodge Jockey S Snell from his mount and at the same time struck him on at least one occasion.

Mr Groves was fined $1,500.00 of which $1,000.00 was suspended for a period of 12 months provided he is not found guilty of a similar contravention during this period.

Both parties have the right to appeal.

Stewards Inquiry

Stewards resumed an inquiry which was adjourned from 22nd September 2002 into an incident at official Barrier Trials at Longford on 17th September 2002. Trainer Ian Hay was found guilty of a charge under AR 175 (j) the particulars of the charge being that he acted in an improper manner towards a Steward in relation to his official duties. Trainer Hay was fined the sum of $100.00. Trainer Hay has the right of Appeal.
