Prior to the running of this event Jockey Kevin Ring was examined by the on course ambulance staff and passed fit to take his mounts.

DARK LADONI was a late scratching at 11.53 by order of the Stewards on Veterinary advice, due to an injury sustained in the float en route to the course.

This race was rescheduled to start at 12.40 p.m. due to the late arrival of an ambulance on course and a camera having to be repositioned in the Judge’s tower.

The start of the race was further delayed 6 minutes when CALAMITY ROSE (D Pires (a)) and WESTELLE (S Snell) both dislodged their riders en route to the barriers and thereafter proved difficult to catch. CALAMITY ROSE was inspected by the Veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place in the field. WESTELLE was a late scratching at 12.44 pm by order of the Stewards on Veterinary advice. Both Apprentice Pires and Jockey Snell were examined by the on-course Ambulance staff and were passed fit to take their mounts.

Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on WESTELLE (2/1) prior to 12.44 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 12.44 pm to be paid less thirty five cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and twenty cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket.

CALAMITY ROSE (D Pires (a)) was slow to begin.

STORMY GAL (L Goodrick) made the turn at the 750 m mark awkwardly and as a result carried DANDERA (B McCoull) wider on the track.

RACE 2 – GRENVILLE STUD FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 2) – 1400 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

RACE 3 – THE PUMP SHED COLTS AND GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE – 1400 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

As the start was effected SOMERVILLE STAR (K Ring) jumped in and contacted with BRAGANZA (L Goodrick) who in turn contacted with BELFRY BOUNTY (D Parish).

A post race Veterinary examination of TIPTON revealed the gelding to be lame in both forelegs and Trainer G McCulloch was advised that a Veterinary certificate of fitness must be tendered prior to its next race start.

As the start was effected MY LOVER (C Kingston) jumped inwards contacting with LONELY SHORE (B McCoull) who in turn contacted with MIDNIGHT BREW (D Pires (a)).

RACE 6 – T A BRICKNELL CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed until 4.06 p.m. when Jockey K Moore the rider of the 3rd placed runner DAYBREAK DAWN, after viewing the film of the race, lodged a protest against the 2nd placed horse DAZZLING VINTAGE (S Snell) on the grounds that DAYBREAK DAWN suffered interference rounding the home turn. The protest was dismissed and Stewards confirmed the Judge’s placings. It was established that rounding the home turn DAZZLING VINTAGE when racing to the inside of SILENT AUCTION (K Sanderson) shifted inwards slightly when under pressure and in doing so crowded DAYBREAK DAWN for racing room. As a result this gelding had to be steadied for a number of strides. In all circumstances Stewards reprimanded Jockey S Snell under AR 137 (a), careless riding, for allowing his mount to shift ground and advised him that he must take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

As the start was effected DAZZLING VINTAGE (S Snell) jumped inwards and contacted with DAYBREAK DAWN (K Moore). As a result DAYBREAK DAWN lost ground as a consequence.

The start of this race was delayed when SCENTIAN BELLE became fractions in the barriers. Following a Veterinary inspection SCENTIAN BELLE was found fit to take its place in the field.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed until 5.29 pm when Jockey D Parish the rider of the 2nd placed runner WILLOW SPRINGS lodged a protest against the 1st placed horse DEI GRATIA (C Burt) on the grounds that WILLOW SPRINGS suffered interference in the home straight. The protest was upheld and Stewards confirmed the Judge’s placings to read 4, 5 and 1 on the grounds that the interference suffered exceeded the margin at the winning post. It was established that at approximately the 100m mark Jockey Burt permitted her mount to shift ground inwards when insufficiently clear of WILLOW SPRINGS causing that mare to be checked out over the heels of DEI GRATIA. In all circumstances Stewards found Jockey C Burt guilty under AR 137 (a), careless riding, and suspended her from riding in races for two (2) Tasmanian racemeetings from midnight Wednesday 1st January 2003 to expire midnight Wednesday 8th January 2003.
