RACE 1 - FALL OF SINGAPORE SUPERVOBIS (TAS) 2-Y-O

MAIDEN PLATE - DIVISION 1 - 1080 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Jockey S Maskiell (PRIMA CAVALLO) was dislodged from his mount en route to the barriers. Jockey Maskiell re-mounted and proceeded to the barriers.

DUGANOWL (L Goodrick) and SPECIAL HONEY (J Borrett) were both slow into stride.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, PETER’S PICK (D Pires A) rolled in slightly. As a result TOM’S TOP (B McCoull) had to be steadied by its rider and shifted out slightly. At the same time BORN A QUEEN (K Bandy) shifted in marginally which in turn resulted in ROYAL RELAY (P Michaelides), who was over-racing at the time, becoming crowded for galloping room for a number of strides before being restrained by its rider. As a result of this incident ALSANDREA (R Hanby A) had to be checked by its rider and switched to the outside of the heels of LITTLE STUART (S Gates) who had shifted in slightly.

GRAND ARTIST (C Burt) and SUPER BREW (S Tsaikos) laid in throughout in the straight.

CLAUSE TWO (K Sanderson) raced greenly in the straight.

The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that he inspected GRAND ARTIST at the barriers and found the gelding to have a heavy infection of a skin disease consistent with ringworm over its shoulder, ribs and the left foreleg. Trainer McCulloch will be advised that a veterinary certificate is required prior to GRAND ARTIST’s next race start to ensure the infection has cleared.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BORN A QUEEN (Trainer Terence Evans).

RACE 2 - DARWIN MEMORIAL SUPERVOBIS (TAS) 2-Y-O

MAIDEN PLATE - DIVISION 2 - 1080 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed when the horses arrived at the barrier a little late.

The start was further delayed when CLANCY QUEST (K Bandy) proved fractious at the barriers and difficult to load. Stewards will advise Trainer Graeme McCulloch that a warning had been placed on this colt’s manners at the barriers.

BRIDGEWATER JERRY (W Stacey A) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event and was difficult to restrain.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening, BRIDGEWATER JERRY (W Stacey A) became crowded for galloping room to the inside of LE TOUCH (C Burt) and CENTERTAIN (B McCoull) and had to be steadied by its rider when attempting a tight run to the inside of LE TOUCH.

Shortly after straightening, DESIGN ACADEMY (S Gates) switched to the inside of LE TOUCH (S Burt) to obtain a clear run. Shortly thereafter, LE TOUCH shifted in slightly and as a result DESIGN ACADEMY shied away from it and shifted inwards. Thereafter BRIDGEWATER JERRY (W Stacey A) became crowded between DESIGN ACADEMY and the inside running rail and had to be checked by its rider. Notwithstanding the fact that DESIGN ACADEMY (S Gates) had shied away from LE TOUCH (C Burt) to its outside, Stewards issued Jockey Gates with a reprimand, AR-137(a) (careless riding) and advised him that in the circumstances he should have stopped and straightened his mount sooner than he had done on this occasion.

DESIGN ACADEMY (S Gates) jumped the shadow at the winning post.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race FOR US ALL (Trainer Chris Crook).

RACE 3 - P.O.W. SUPERVOBIS (TAS) 2-Y-O HANDICAP

1205 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

CAITLIN’S BEST (C Kingston) and SAVILLE (L Goodrick) were both slow into stride.

CAITLIN’S BEST (C Kingston) raced ungenerously for some distance in the middle stages of the event.

At approximately the 700 metre mark CURRENT TREND (B McCoull) who was racing ungenerously, had to be restrained off the heels of FINE OMENS (S Maskiell) who had rolled in marginally, and shifted to the outside of this horse’s heels and in doing so contacted with CAITLIN’S BEST (C Kingston) to its outside. As a result TRISTALE (K Bandy) who was racing to the outside of CAITLIN’S BEST (C Kingston) was carried a little wider up the track.

A post-race veterinary inspection of QUEE DEE failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 4 - KOKODA TRAIL MAIDEN PLATE - 1205 METRES

11 RUNNERS

Apprentice R Hanby (BACKSTAGE LASS) and Jockey C Burt (CALL ME ROSIE) were each fined $25 under AR-175(k) for presenting themselves in the incorrect colours in the mounting yard.

The start of this race was delayed when it was established that the reins fitted to CALL ME ROSIE (Jockey C Burt - Trainer Douglas Brazendale) required replacement at the barriers. The start was further delayed when NOTORIOUS DEE (C Kingston) and GO WAY OUT (K Bandy) broke through the front of their barrier gates. After galloping a short distance, both geldings were restrained by their riders and returned to behind the barriers where both horses underwent veterinary inspections. After inspection, NOTORIOUS DEE and GO WAY OUT were passed fit to take their places with the field. An announcement to this effect was made prior to the event.

CALL ME ROSIE (C Burt) became buffeted between SECRETARY LADY (S Gates) and AVENGING STAR (R Bradley A) shortly after the start and lost some ground on the field as a result. When questioned, Jockey Burt stated that after suffering some interference shortly after the start, she felt something amiss with this filly and as a result she eased this filly out of the event shortly thereafter.

FLOPPY BUMBLE (B McCoull) threw its head up and raced ungenerously for some distance between the 800 and the 600 metre marks.

SECRETARY LADY (S Gates) and PRINCESS OF NIME (R Hanby A) had a tendency to lay in in the straight.

Trainer Douglas Brazendale pleaded guilty to a charge under AR-8(n) in that he presented CALL ME ROSIE in a set of reins which were deemed to be unsuitable and unsafe which resulted in a different set of reins having to be fitted to this filly at the barriers. Trainer Brazendale was fined the sum of $100. In coming to this decision, Stewards took into account that this was Mr Brazendale’s second offence of this nature and advised Trainer Brazendale that in future, a substantially heavier penalty may be imposed for similar breaches. In the circumstances, Stewards confiscated the reins.

A post-race veterinary inspection of CALL ME ROSIE failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 5 - 2/40 BATTALION MAIDEN PLATE - 1310 METRES

10 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected MATSQUI BOY after the gelding became fractious in its barrier stall and sustained a minor graze to its left hock. MATSQUI BOY was subsequently passed fit to take its place with the field.

DEMON DIVER (K Cook) was slow into stride.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, OUR DASHING DANE (P Michaelides) shifted out slightly and carried MISS LEWINSKY (C Burt) a little wider on the track.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DEMON DIVER revealed the colt to have a slow recovery. It was also noted that DEMON DIVER had cast an off-fore plate in running.

RACE 6 - GALLIPOLI CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1205 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for Jockey K Cook to ride BLUE BIALIA one kilogram over the mare’s allotted weight. At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey Cook was reprimanded under AR-120(b) for accepting a ride for which she was subsequently found to be overweight.

A post-race veterinary inspection of ANNIFURY revealed the mare to have a grazed fetlock near foreleg with minor bleeding.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race EMPEROR NAPOLEON (Trainer John Luttrell).

RACE 7 - ANZAC HANDICAP - 1205 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

Stewards gave permission for Jockey L Goodrick to replace Jockey S Tsaikos as the rider of GOODNIK at half a kilogram over the weight allotted to this gelding. Stewards accepted the explanations tendered by both Trainer C Goggin and Jockey S Tsaikos in regard to the change of rider for this gelding.

Jockey S Gates replaced Jockey K Bandy as the rider of CAITLIN’S HOPE when Jockey Bandy was found to be overweight. At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey Bandy was reprimanded under AR-120(b) for accepting a ride for which he was subsequently found to be overweight.

RACE 8 - DEFENCE FORCES CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1550 METRES

8 RUNNERS

DEVON RELAY (K Cook) was slow into stride.

MY LOVER (S Gates) broke down shortly after straightening. As a result Jockey S Gates eased this gelding out of the event. The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had an injury to its off hind leg and was subsequently euthanased.

LIGHT RANK (L Goodrick ) laid in throughout in the straight. Jockey Goodrick reported at scale that as a result of this horse laying in, she was unable to ride the gelding out in her normal manner.

RACE 9 - VIETNAM CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1080 METRES

5 RUNNERS

LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) (E Chan A) was slow away at the start.
