The race book failed to show Stan Tsaikos as the rider of GRAND EVENING. A public announcement was made to this effect prior to the running of this event.

BEER BUDDY (Phil Michaelides) was slow to begin.

At approximately the 200 metre mark AZURE MELODY (Stephen Maskiell) laid in under pressure and in doing so carried BIRDIE GRAND (Mark Goring) inwards, who in turn shifted in and crowded GRAND EVENING (Stan Tsaikos). As a result Mr Tsaikos had to take hold of his mount and ease off the heels of SUPER SCAY (Kelvin Sanderson).

PETER’S PICK (Will Stacey (a)) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

At approximately the 80 metre mark AZURE MELODY (Stephen Maskiell) continued to lay in under pressure and as a result crowded SUPER SCAY (Kelvin Sanderson) who became unbalanced for a number of strides.

RACE 2 –THE SIGNMAKER MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

The start of this race was put back ten minutes due to EXPRESS PRESS (Corey Kingston) becoming fractious in the mounting yard, rearing over, dislodging its rider and striking its head heavily on the ground. The mare was attended to by the veterinary surgeon and transported off course. The race was then put back another ten minutes due to the unavailability of barrier staff who were attending EXPRESS PRESS. EXPRESS PRESS was a late scratching at 1.28 p.m. acting on veterinary advice and as a result all bets placed on this mare prior to scratching time were refunded. Stewards ordered all win and place bets be paid less ten cents on the face value of the tickets. The veterinary surgeon reported that EXPRESS PRESS was unable to regain her feet after the fall and began to thrash her legs in convulsions. The mare was treated with heavy sedation, high doses of anti-inflammatory drugs and then anaesthetised to allow removal from the course. She was further treated with anti-inflammatories and after approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes was able to regain her feet. EXPRESS PRESS was further monitored for another hour thereafter and she began to drink and eat. After standing, the mare appeared dazed and ataxic to some degree, but stable. She will require further monitoring over the next few days. A veterinary certificate of soundness will be required prior to her next race start.

As the start was effected SOMERVILLE STAR (David Keating (a)) jumped in the air.

JACARANDA PARK (Stephen Maskiell) jumped inwards at the start contacting BELFRY BOUNTY (David Pires (a)) and as a result BELFRY BOUNTY made contact with ALI’S BEST (Jodi Borrett).

BELFRY BOUNTY (David Pires (a)) was inclined to pull hard in the early and middle stages.

It was noted that SOMERVILLE STAR (David Keating (a)) raced very greenly throughout.

TIPTON (Stan Tsaikos) made the crossing at approximately the 200 metre mark awkwardly.

RAYMOND STREET (Mark Goring) cast a near hind plate in the running. A veterinary inspection revealed the mare had been galloped on the near hind during running. She suffered skin lacerations to back of cannon. The area was bandaged, treated with anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis. A veterinary certificate of soundness will be required prior to this mare’s next race star.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race JACARANDA PARK (Trainer Mr Leon Wells).

RACE 3 – J.W. DAW MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed fifteen minutes due to the events of Race 2.

The race book failed to show Dianne Parish as the rider of FLY GIRL. A public announcement was made to this effect.

ANTONIO was a late scratching at 12.00 midday due to non-arrival on course. After speaking with the Club secretary and trainer Graeme McCulloch it was determined an attempt by the Club to notify Mr McCulloch, via his mobile phone, was unsuccessful and as a result Mr McCulloch was unaware that ANTONIO had obtained a start. Mr McCulloch, therefore, did not transport the gelding to the course.

SONAR DREAM (Kevin Dodge) was a late scratching at 12.27 p.m. by order of stewards. Upon enquiry it was determined that the scratching of this gelding had been notified to the Tasmanian Race Club on Tuesday 17 December 2002. However, due to a communication problem the Devonport Racing Club did not receive official notification. It is the stewards’ intention to attempt to standardise a scratching notification procedure in an attempt to alleviate future problems in this area.

The start of this race was delayed slightly when SKI STAR (Will Stacey (a)) had to be resaddled behind the starting gates and then further delayed another two minutes when BALMY (Kellie Cook) reared and got its off foreleg over the barrier structure. As a result BALMY was taken out of the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place in the race.

As the start was effected BALMY (Kellie Cook) and OUR GIRL THROB (David Pires (a)) contacted heavily.

FANTA’S LUCK (Phil Michaelides) and RUTHAIN (Stan Tsaikos) were inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages.

Over the concluding stages RUTHAIN (Stan Tsaikos) and WRAP IT UP (Stephen Maskiell) came together and brushed on a number of occasions.

RACE 4 – THE BEACH HOTEL CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed by 10 minutes due to the incidents at the barrier in the previous race.

PINTERRY NOBLE (David Pires (a)) was a little slow to begin.

After this event Mr Mark Goring, the rider of CHOKITO, was reprimanded, under A.R.144, for failing to weigh in on return to scale. In not taking further action, stewards took into account Mr Goring’s good record in this regard.

Stewards questioned Mr Stephen Maskiell, the rider of DALWINA, in particular with regard to his apparent lack of vigour over the concluding stages. Mr Maskiell explained that this mare pulled very hard throughout and when placed under pressure failed to improve and had a tendency to lay out. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of DALWINA which revealed cuts and ulcers present in the left and right cheeks at point of contact with the bit. Stewards noted Mr Maskiell’s comments.

RACE 5 – RUNDLE FAMILY HOTEL CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

SILK ‘N’ ROSES (Leah Goodrick) and TETON DAKOTA (Jodi Borrett) bumped shortly after the start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, I’LL GET BY (Trainer Graeme McCulloch).

RACE 6 – C-MAX FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Corey Kingston, the rider of the second placegetter, CLEVER JEEL, wished to view the official video patrol film. After viewing the film, Mr Kingston announced that he wished to lodge a protest against BELTCHINA (Stephen Maskiell) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference on the home turn and in the home straight. After considering evidence from all the parties concerned, viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films, and acting on their own observations, the protest was dismissed. Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared.

SINODAL (Brendon McCoull) was slow to begin.

As the start was effected PIA BOOMBA (Kelvin Sanderson) jumped outwards and contacted with FLAMIN’ EMMA (Jodi Borrett).

At approximately the 950 metre mark CLEVER JEEL (Corey Kingston) had to be momentarily eased off the heels of BLETCHINA (Stephen Maskiell) when BLETCHINA shifted inwards slightly.

WESTERN CHEER (Will Stacey (a)) raced fiercely in the early and middle stages.

Leaving the 800 metre mark HIDDEN MOMENT (Mark Goring) had to be restrained off the heels of PIA BOOMBA (Kelvin Sanderson). As a result, ELL HARMONY (David Keating (a)), who was following, also had to be steadied and BLETCHINA (Stephen Maskiell), who was racing behind and slightly to the inside of ELL HARMONY, when being steadied, shifted ground inwards and tightened SINODAL (Brendon McCoull), which was racing back to the inside of ELL HARMONY. In all circumstances Mr Maskiell was advised that, while he was not entirely to blame for the incident, he must ensure that he takes greater care when shifting ground in future.

HIDDEN MOMENT (Mark Goring) made the home turn awkwardly and as a result carried BLETCHINA (Stephen Maskiell) out on to CLEVER JEEL (Corey Kingston).

At approximately the 200 metre mark CLEVER JEEL (Corey Kingston) and BLETCHINA (Stephen Maskiell) bumped.

At approximately the 100 metre mark CLEVER JEEL (Corey Kingston), when laying in under pressure, bumped with BLETCHINA (Stephen Maskiell), carrying this filly in on to HIDDEN MOMENT (Mark Goring) and as a result HIDDEN MOMENT had to be steadied off the heels of FLAMIN’ EMMA (Jodi Borrett).

WESTERN CHEER (Will Stacey (a)) tired noticeably over the concluding stages.

RACE 7 – CARLTON DRAUGHT GOLDEN MILE – 1600 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

The race book failed to show that this event was a non-claiming race for apprentice riders. A public announcement was made to this effect.

SUPER CLASSIC (Mark Goring) and SURGE OF POWER (Leah Goodrick) bumped on jumping.

SUPER CLASSIC (Mark Goring) began awkwardly and brushed with SURGE OF POWER (Leah Goodrick) shortly after the start.

At approximately the 1100 metre mark SUPER CLASSIC (Mark Goring) raced awkwardly on the heels of VAIN EDITION (Phil Michaelides) and had to be momentarily steadied by its rider.

At approximately the 500 metre mark SURGE OF POWER (Leah Goodrick) steadied off the heels of MURPHY’S MAGIC (Brendon McCoull) and shifted to the outside to obtain a clear run and in doing so momentarily inconvenienced SUPER CLASSIC (Mark Goring) which was racing to the outside of that gelding.

Mr Brendon McCoull, the rider of MURPHY’S MAGIC, reported he was held up for a run from the 300 to 600 metre mark.

A swab sample was taken from the third placegetter in the race, FROSTY’S TOY (Trainer Rex Harris).

RACE 8 – M D ‘TATE’ BROWN CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

Mr Stephen Maskiell, the rider of I’M A RACER, was reprimanded under A.R.140A for a negligent act in that he weighed out for his mount without stirrup irons. In not taking further action stewards took into account that this problem was resolved quickly with no inconvenience to other people.

As the start was effected COMICS (Corey Kingston) and I’M A RACER (Stephen Maskiell) contacted.

Shortly after the start PETER GUN (Will Stacey (a)) shifted outwards and contacted with WINGS OF JADE (Jodi Borrett), who in turn shifted out and inconvenienced FATHER PATRICK (David Pires (a)). A veterinary inspection of WINGS OF JADE subsequent to the event revealed blood in the gelding’s mouth which was of nil significance

Leaving the 600 metre mark COMICS (Corey Kingston) laid inwards and bumped with GEEZER (Stan Tsaikos).

Stewards enquired into the reason why BICAPOBLUE (Mark Goring) was checked at approximately the 550 metre mark. Upon enquiry it was established PETER GUN (Will Stacey (a)), who was racing three wide at this stage, shifted ground inwards slightly. As a result I’M A RACER (Stephen Maskiell), who was inclined to hang in, racing to the inside, was forced to shift inwards to avoid that gelding’s heels and in doing so was crowded and checked by BICAPOBLUE. In all the circumstances stewards decided that a reprimand be issued against Mr Maskiell, under A.R.137(a) for careless riding and in not taking harsher action, took into account that on this occasion it was evident that his mount hung in at this stage of the race. Stewards will enquire into the reasons why Mr S Maskiell left the course without first obtaining permission.

At approximately the 200 metre mark CATTO (Kevin Ring) shifted ground outwards abruptly and as a result carried SAFIN (Leah Goodrick) wider on the track. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of CATTO which revealed blood in the gelding’s mouth and ulcers on left and right cheeks at point of contact with the bit (a rubber bit was used).
