The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected THE WEB (Trainer Chris Crook) at the barriers prior to the start of this race and passed the gelding fit to take its place in the field.

As the start was affected, MADAM MASQUE (T Atkin) jumped out, carrying REGALETTE (M Ball (a)) out on to DARK EMBRACE (S Gates) which was crowded for racing room between that gelding who lost some ground and SONAR EXPRESS (D Robinson (a)) and as a result, DARK EMBRACE appeared to clip the heels of REGALETTE (M Ball (a)).  Jockey S Gates became momentarily unbalanced as a result.

BACK AT TWO (S Snell) jumped awkwardly and lost a little ground as a consequence resulting in Jockey Snell becoming momentarily unbalanced.

DARK EMBRACE (S Gates) raced green the entire length of the home straight.

Jockey S Maskiell reported on return to scale that THE WEB wanted to hang in throughout the event.  Jockey Maskiell also reported that he had to restrain his mount down the back straight when trapped extremely wide.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BACK AT TWO (Trainer Walter McShane).

As the gates were released BIG MAMA BEAR (S Gates) jumped awkwardly then shifted out and bumped with PO (M Ball (a)) who in turn made contact with TYCOON SALI (B McCoull).

BIG MAMA BEAR (S Gates) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

MINN (K Bandy) over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

Prior to the winning post, ORPEN TIME (D Robinson (a)) shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider, crowding SUPER POWER (D Parish) in on to BIG MAMA BEAR (S Gates).

RACE 3  - BOOK NOW FOR THE HOBART CUP VIP MARQUEE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1205 METRES  -  DIVISION 1

After receiving a confirmed telephone call from Trainer D Howlin, stewards declared DESERT ROMEO to be a late scratching at 11.48 am after the gelding refused to be loaded into the horse-float to be transported to the racecourse.

DON’T TELL GRANDMA (C Kingston) was slow away.

IMOLICITY (S Snell) got its head up and raced fiercely in the middle stages.

At approximately the 550 metre mark, UNTIL SUNDOWN (D Oakford) appeared to slip behind which momentarily unbalanced Jockey Oakford.

At approximately the 250 metre mark, DON’T TELL GRANDMA (C Kingston) shifted out to improve and carried IMOLICITY (S Snell) a little wider on the track.

Jockey S Snell reported at scale that IMOLICITY was fractious in the barriers.

A post-race veterinary examination of IMOLICITY (Trainer Brian Lomasney) revealed the filly to be slightly short in its action at a trot but no soreness was found.  Trainer Lomasney stated that this was normal.  No other abnormalities were found.

Stewards and a deputation of jockeys carried out an inspection of a section of the track between the 500 – 600 metre mark and were satisfied with the condition of the track, however, they will monitor that area during the day.

RACE 5  - CADBURY TASMANAIN DERBY ON 12/02/2005 MAIDEN / CLASS 1 PLATE – SET WEIGHTS – 1920 METRES

The start of this race was delayed when LONGUEHAIEINE (T Atkin) became fractious in its barrier stall and GOIDELIC (J Borrett) broke through the front of its barrier stall and galloped a short distance before being quickly restrained and returned to behind the barriers where the Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected both horses and passed them fit to take their places in the field.  Shortly thereafter BIG TRAIN (S Gates) became fractious in the barriers resulting in IGOLIDE (L Goodrick) breaking through the front of its barrier stall.  IGOLIDE was quickly restrained by its rider and returned to behind the barriers.   BIG TRAIN  (S Gates) was unloaded from its barrier stall and both horses underwent veterinary examinations before being passed fit to take their places in the field.  The start was further delayed to allow Race 4 at Newcastle to run at 2.06 pm.  Stewards advised Trainer C Crook that LONGUEHAIEINE has been stood down until the gelding can pass a barrier trial or jump out to Stewards’ satisfaction.  In not taking more severe action against BIG TRAIN (Trainer G White), Stewards took into account that the horses had to stand in the barrier for some five minutes.

FATHER PATRICK (C Kingston) and WINEBERRY (NZ) (R Bradley) were both slow into stride.

IGOLIDE (L Goodrick) over-raced out of the straight on the first occasion at the 1700 metre mark.

Rounding the 500 metre mark, FATHER PATRICK (C Kingston) was held up behind the tiring BIG TRAIN (S Gates).

Following the running of this race, Jockey T Atkin (LONGUEHAIEINE) was examined by the on-course ambulance officers who declared him fit to fulfill his remaining riding engagements.

A post-race veterinary inspection of LONGUEHAIEINE (Trainer Chris Crook) revealed the gelding to have minor hair loss over its left eye but no other abnormalities were found.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BIG TRAIN (Trainer Gary White) revealed the gelding to have a minor laceration to its near hind thigh but no other abnormalities.

Trainer Mrs Christine Crook advised Stewards that upon her return to her stables, IGOLIDE was found to be lame.  Stewards advised Trainer Crook that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered before the gelding’s next race start or trial.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race DURRENMATT (Trainer John Luttrell)

RACE 6  - RACT FASHIONS ON THE FIELD CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1920 METRES

The start of this race was delayed approximately two minutes due to a delay in Race 6 at Benalla.

MAN IN BLACK (L Goodrick) and CORINDHAP (D Parish) were both a little slow into stride.

At about the 250 metre mark CORINDHAP (D Parish) got its head up and was inclined to lay in resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten the gelding.

Over the concluding stages, YES NO YES (M Ball (a)) shifted ground outwards.  As a result HEARTLESS (B McCoull) who was racing to its outside was carried wider out on to SCOTTISH SYMBOL (T Atkin) who was in turn bumped and pressured inwards by CORINDHAP (D Parish) who was laying in despite the efforts of its rider.

RACE 7  -  WREST POINT LADIES DAY ON 30/01/2005 – FILLIES & MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1310 METRES

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey Brendon McCoull, rider of the second placegetter, PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER, lodged an objection against LITTLELIONHART (D Robinson (a)) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 300 metre mark.  After viewing the official patrol videos, hearing the evidence from all parties and from the Stewards own observations, Stewards dismissed the protest and the Judge’s placings stood.  At a subsequent inquiry it was established that at approximately the 250 metre mark, PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER which was racing to the outside of LITTLELIONHART, laid in.  At the same time LITTLELIONHART shifted ground outwards.  Stewards were of the opinion that both horses contributed to the interference.  Stewards advised Apprentice D Robinson that in future, he must ensure that he stops riding and straightens his mounts when they commence to shift ground.

As the start was affected, TWIGMOSITY (M Ball (a)) jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped with STRATHMORE MAID (S Gates).  Shortly thereafter TWIGMOSITY got its head up and commenced to over-race.

GOOD GOD (J Borrett) made the turn at the 1200 metre mark awkwardly.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race LITTLELIONHART (Trainer Harriet Paul).

Trainer C Crook advised Stewards that she had instructed Jockey Snell (MATSERATI) to settle the gelding off the pace and not to lead if possible in today’s event.

PROVIDE FOR ALL (C Kingston) failed to muster early speed.

KELLEN (B McCoull) hung out in the home straight.

Jockey D Oakford (SINOLOGY) pleaded guilty under AR137(a) careless riding in that at about the 200 metre mark, he shifted ground inwards when insufficiently clear of MATSERATI (S Snell).   As a result MATSERATI was checked by its rider and appeared to clip the heels of SINOLOGY dislodging its rider.  Jockey D Oakford’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of three race meetings in Tasmania commencing at midnight 14 November 2004 and to expire at midnight on 28 November 2004.

Jockey S Maskiell (BAY RITZ) reported at scale that his mount wanted to over-race down the back straight.

GENERAL

Stewards today concluded an inquiry from Race 3, the Raine & Horne Kingston Supervobis 3-Y-O Maiden – 1200 metres at Elwick on Tuesday, 2 November 2004 into the reasons why THE WEB (S Maskiell) was eased out of the race upon entering the home straight.  Dr M Buckerfield inspected THE WEB after trackwork on Wednesday, 3 November 2004 and could find no abnormalities with the horse.  After re-interviewing Jockey Maskiell today, he again stated that he felt there was something amiss with the horse.  After taking into account the pre-race incident, Stewards noted his explanation.
