Stewards accepted Trainer G White’s explanation for all his riders being omitted from the race-book for today’s event.  A public announcement was made to this effect prior to the race start. 

RACE 1 –  CADBURY TRIPLE DECKER MAIDEN PLATE – (3YO&UP SW) - 1600 METRES

INCHCAPE (J Borrett) was slow into stride.

At approximately the 1400 metres MATTINGLY (B McCoull) who was over-racing, shifted ground outwards and bumped with MYSTIC MILLIE (M Maskiell).  Shortly thereafter MYSTIC MILLIE rolled in marginally and as a result tightened MATTINGLY in on to LITTLE SAD (D Oakford) who was hampered and lost ground in consequence.  At the same time, DARK EMBRACE (J Cameron) who was over‑racing, threw its head in the air on several occasions and was inconvenienced and steadied off the heels of LITTLE SAD.  MELAMEE (D Yendall) who was following was also steadied.  Thereafter both DARK EMBRACE and MELAMEE over-raced.

WIITIKO (G Ryan) over-raced in the early stages when the pace eased.  INCHCAPE (J Borrett) shifted wider on the track to avoid the heels of WIITIKO and as a result bumped with QUEEN OF DENMARK (S Gates).

At approximately the 600 metres MYSTIC MILLIE (S Maskiell) shifted ground inwards and inconvenienced MATTINGLY (B McCoull).

Rounding the home turn LITTLE SAD (D Oakford) shifted ground outwards then bumped with TWOFOLD (S Snell) and carried that mare wider on the track.

At approximately the 250 metres, BURNT BACK (P Michaelides) when racing greenly, shifted ground inwards abruptly.  As a result BURNT BACK made heavy contact with the running rail and raced greenly thereafter.  Jockey Michaelides stopped riding momentarily to straighten the gelding.

INCHCAPE (J Borrett) laid in in the home straight.

Jockey S Maskiell (MYSTIC MILLIE) reported that his horse felt touchy in the mouth.  A post-race veterinary inspection of MYSTIC MILLE (Trainer John Hill) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of LEX LOCI (Trainer Royston Carr) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of NIGHT FIGHTER (Trainer Jack Green) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BURNT BACK (Trainer Chris Crook). 

RACE 2 – CADBURY DAIRY MILK SUPERVOBIS (TAS) 3YO CLASS 6 HANDICAP

                   1400 METRES

ON CURFEW (T Atkin) threw its head in the air at the start and as a result was slow into stride.

FUN ALLY (S Hamer A) laid out in the home straight.

Stewards advised Apprentice Hamer (FUN ALLY) that in future, he must stop riding and straighten his mounts when they commence to shift ground.

A post-race veterinary inspection of  PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the filly.  Apprentice M Ball stated that he was of the belief that the filly did not handle the firmer surface today.  Trainer Goggin advised that PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER would now be turned out until such time as the tracks become rain-affected.

RACE 3 – NAVY WEEK CLASS 1 HANDICAP  -  1400 METRES

SPECIAL HONEY (J Borrett) and BIONIC BOY (J Kehoe) were both a little slow into stride.

Approaching the 600 metres FOREST PEAK (B McCoull) and MANTLE TALK (G Ryan) bumped on several occasions.

Approaching the 400 metres, SPECIAL HONEY (J Borrett) was held up behind runners in front.

At approximately the 300 metres, BIONIC BOY (J Kehoe) had to be eased out over the heels of the tiring STEAMBOAT ROCK (D Pires) to obtain a clear run.

HEEDFUL (T Atkin) was inconvenienced when ESTATE KING (S Hamer) to his inside, hung out rounding the home turn.

Jockey B McCoull (FOREST PEAK) stated that his mount had a tendency to hang out and he felt there may have been something amiss with the gelding.  A post-race veterinary inspection of FOREST PEAK (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of IRISH JOKER (Trainer Darrel Carr) revealed minor abrasions to its near hind fetlock.

RACE 4 – CARBINE CLUB CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

ANDRE THE GIANT (M Gatt) over-raced in the middle stages.

Stewards questioned Trainer T Roles in regard to the improved performance of DRUM TIME today.  Trainer Roles stated that the addition of blinkers and removal of the tongue tie and also a change in his work schedule during the week, lead to the improved performance.  Stewards noted Trainer Roles’ explanation.

RACE 5 – MOTORS SAAB 2YO STAKES – SET WEIGHTS – NO CLAIMS – LISTED 1100 METRES

TROUNSER (D Pires) was a late scratching at 3.27 pm by order of the Stewards when the colt refused to be loaded into its barrier stall.  Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on TROUNSER to be refunded in full.  All bets made prior to 3.27 pm to be paid less seven cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and less seven cents in the dollar on the face value of the place ticket.  Stewards advised Trainer Graeme McCulloch that TROUNSER must undergo two consecutive barrier tests to Stewards’ satisfaction prior to racing. 

The start of this race was further delayed when BRAKIM LASS (B McCoull) broke through the front of its barrier gates.  The filly was restrained by its rider and returned to behind the barriers by the Clerk of the Course, where the veterinary surgeon inspected it.  After inspection, BRAKIM LASS was passed fit to take its place with the field. 

BRAKIM LASS (B McCoull) jumped in at the start on to SANTORINI SKY (J Borrett).  As a result SANTORINI SKY lost some ground.

UZIGAL (G Ryan) and TOBY’S QUEST (M Ball A) over-raced in the early stages.

HILDAGO (M Gatt) and MY MISSY ROSE (D Oakford) raced greenly in the back straight. 

HILDAGO (M Gatt) hung out rounding the home turn when tiring.  A subsequent post-race veterinary inspection failed to reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Campbell will advise Stewards if anything becomes apparent with HILDAGO after its return to his stables.

MY MISSY ROSE (D Oakford) was held up at the top of the straight behind HILDAGO (M Gatt).

Over the concluding stages, SANTORINI SKY (J Borrett) shifted ground abruptly and bumped heavily with HILDAGO (M Gatt).

UZIGAL (G Ryan) returned to scale with blood in both nostrils.  Trainer Troy Blacker was advised of the provisions of AR 53A (4) in that UZIGAL may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months and it may not start in any race for a period of three months effective 12/02/2005, whereafter it is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

Jockey S Snell (WEST SPECTOR) reported at scale that he felt there may have been something amiss with the gelding during the race. A post-race veterinary inspection of WEST SPECTOR (Trainer Paul Jones) revealed the gelding to have a stiff, shuffling gait.  Trainer Paul Jones was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered before WEST SPECTOR’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BRAKIM LASS (Trainer Charlie Goggin).

RACE 6 – CADBURY TASMANIAN DERBY 3YO SET WEIGHTS – NO CLAIMS – GROUP 3 2100 METRES

Pre-race blood samples were taken from the following horses:

The announcement correct weight was delayed when Jockey M Gatt (EXPUNGE) wished to view the video of the start.  After viewing the film, he was satisfied that he had not been disadvantaged at the start and correct weight was given.

STUYVESANT (C Kingston), DROOPY (M Allen), EXPUNGE (M Gatt) and PORTLAND PROPHET (J Patton) were all fractious in the barriers before the start was affected.

The barrier gate with DROOPY (M Allen) opened before the start but Jockey Allen restrained DROOPY before the gelding could break through.

DROOPY (M Allen) and EXPUNGE (M Gatt) were slow away at the start.

Shortly after the start RUMKER (V Caddy) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of TAXI TOM (J Borrett).

SHINING STORM (D Pires) broke down when making the crossing at the 1900 metres.  A MY UNCLE TED (D Yendall) and LADETO (J Cameron) were both inconvenienced as a result.  SHINING STORM (Trainer Peter Luttrell) was retired from the race. SHINING STORM was euthanased after the race by the Club’s veterinary surgeon.

At approximately the 1800 metres, TAXI TOM (J Borrett) became momentarily inconvenienced and had to be steadied by its rider when it bumped with VISCOUNT CAMERON (G Murphy) on a number of occasions.

YOMEE (S Gates) was inconvenienced behind SHINING STORM (D Pires) at about the 1600 metres.

VISCOUNT CAMERON (G Murphy) over-raced in the early stages of the event before going forward to take up a forward position.

At approximately the 1100 metres, EXPUNGE (M Gatt) shifted outwards abruptly and carried YOMEE (S Gates) wider on the track.

On the home turn, VISCOUNT CAMERON (G Murphy) shifted wider on the track and bumped with EXPUNGE (M Gatt).

STUYVESANT (C Kingston) shifted in abruptly over the concluding stages.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race PHANTOM THIEF (Trainer Lee Freedman).

RACE 7 – ARROWFIELD BOW MISTRESS TROPHY – FILLIES & MARES – WEIGHT FOR AGE  NO CLAIMS – 1200 METRES

At the start, KATS CLAUSE (S Snell) jumped outwards and inconvenienced CHRONOMETER (V Caddy) who in turn made contact with FABER (J Patton).

LA BELLA ZOCCOLA (M Allen) knuckled on jumping.

MISLAID (C Kingston) was slow into stride.

At approximately 700 metres VENUS A GO GO (S Maskiell) was momentarily inconvenienced when MISLAID (C Kingston) rolled in marginally.

FLOPPY BUMBLE (G Murphy) which lead, compounded on the home turn.  A post-race veterinary inspection of FLOPPY BUMBLE (Trainer David Brunton) revealed the mare to have slight soreness in the off-side front fetlock.  Trainer D Brunton was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered prior to the mare’s next race start.

At approximately the 200 metres LITTLELIONHART (M Ball A) laid out under pressure.  As a result this mare carried ALWAYS SLICK (D Yendall) out on to HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) who in turn bumped with FABER (J Patton).

Jockey L Goodrick (MYRAYOV) reported on return to scale that the mare was inclined to hang out from the 600 metres.  A post-race veterinary inspection of MYRAYOV (Trainer Barry Campbell) failed to reveal any abnormalities with the mare.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race NUCLEAR FREE (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 8 – SCHWEPPES AQUAVETA CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 2100 METRES

                   ***Weights Raised 0.5***

Leaving the 600 metres, FATHER PATRICK (D Pires) was held up and at approximately the 450 metres when endeavouring to obtain a run to the outside of MOONLIGHT BELLE (NZ) (S Hamer A) and SQUANDERMANIA (G Ryan) to its outside, was inconvenienced and as a result lost ground in consequence.

FATHER PATRICK (D Pires) was slow into stride and laid in in the home straight and as a result the gelding had to be straightened by its rider.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MR BEE (Walter McShane) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the gelding.
