Prior to the commencement of the meeting Stewards ordered pacifiers off all runners in view of the heavy track conditions.

Following the running of Race 1 the track was upgraded to SLOW at 1.30 p.m. A public announcement was made to this effect. Stewards further advised that the section of the track between the 450m and 300m marks was still rated as HEAVY.

Following the upgrade of the track at 1.30 p.m. Stewards allowed horses to race equipped with pacifiers.

Trainer Craig Conron advised he had placed Apprentice David Keating in the care of Trainer Terry Roles from 20-23 October 2002.

* Jockey Mason advised Stewards at 12.22pm that he would be unable to fulfill his engagements due to illness, he was advised to tender a Medical Certificate declaring him fit to ride prior to riding in any trackwork, trials or races.

RACE 1 – AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER, THREE YEARS OLD CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES - 6 RUNNERS

LA VAIN (P Michaelides) was re-saddled at the start.

Both MIDNIGHT BREW (K Dodge) and LYMINGTON (S McFerran) were slow away at the start.

VANDELLA (S Snell) was momentarily tightened for galloping room at approximately the 900m mark between MIDNIGHT BREW (K Dodge) and IMPONDERABLE (S Maskiell).

Leading up to the home turn IMPONDERABLE (S Maskiell) commenced to lay in, shifted in and contacted with MIDNIGHT BREW (K Dodge) to its inside, thereafter both horses made contact for a short distance resulting in MIDNIGHT BREW having to be checked by its rider.

IMPONDERABLE (S Maskiell) continued to lay in in the straight which resulted in Jockey S Maskiell having to stop riding and straighten his mount.

RACE 2 – VODKA CRUISER MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 1) – 1200 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for EILY’S LASS to race without blinkers. An announcement was made to this effect prior to the running of the event. Stewards granted permission acting on the assurance of Trainer John Parkinson that a Stable Return removing blinkers as gear had been lodged. Trainer Parkinson was advised that if Stewards records do not reflect the lodgment of the Stable Return action may be taken.

NUVOLARI (S Maskiell) jumped out at the start and contacted with DAZZLING VINTAGE (S Quilty).

SINODAL (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start and as a consequence was slow away.

AUCTION ANNIE (R Bradley (a)) and INSURED (J Borrett) were slow away at the start.

At about the 500m mark DAZZLING VINTAGE (S Quilty) shifted to the outside of EILY’S LASS (M Goring) to obtain clear running and shortly after doing so became crowded between EILY’S LASS and NUVOLARI (S Maskiell) to its outside when this colt who was held up for a clear run for a number of strides shifted in marginally. As a result DAZZLING VINTAGE shifted in and contacted the hind quarters of EILY’S LASS, turned this filly sideways, who in turn became unbalanced and shifted outwards contributing to DAZZLING VINTAGE’s inconvenience.

LAKE JULIAN (S Snell) had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

A post race Veterinary inspection of AUCTION ANNIE which revealed this filly to be in season, and sore in near side knee. Stewards advised Trainer Donna Hayes that a Veterinary Certificate of fitness was required prior to this mare’s next race start.

RACE 3 – CARLTON DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 2) – 1200 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

Prior to the start MESTINOS (C Kingston) became fractious and reared in the barrier and got its front legs caught over the barrier partitions. This gelding was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and permitted to take its place in the field. Stewards advised Trainer Gary White the gelding is to trial and prove tractable prior to its next race start.

STIHLMACK (S Maskiell) jumped out at the start and contacted with WINDAWAY (M Goring) who in turn contacted with OUR MUMMA (S McFerran). As a result OUR MUMMA became unbalanced.

DEVON’S EDITION (R Bradley (a)) was slow into stride.

SWEET MAMA (J Borrett) was held up for a number of strides rounding the home turn behind D’OR FILLE (P Michaelides).

On return to Scale it was established that D’OR FILLE (P Michaelides) had cast an off hind plate in running.

A post race Veterinary inspection of MESTINOS revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event BEAN STALKER (Trainer Peter Geeves).

RACE 4 – MILDARA BLASS FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

Trainer G E Blacker was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club colours on CABAL EYES.

PASIELLES (D Keating (a)) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

Rounding the home turn shortly before straightening BUFFALO LASS (C Burt) became momentarily inconvenienced between LITTLE EM (L Balding) and COUNTESS SOPHIE (B McCoull). Shortly thereafter COUNTESS SOPHIE was slightly inconvenienced when HIDDEN MOMENT (S Snell) shifted out and carried DONNA MAJELLA (S Maskiell) and PASIELLES (D Keating (a)) a little wider on the track. In the run to the line HIDDEN MOMENT had a tendency to lay out.

A post race Veterinary inspection of BUFFALO LASS revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 5 – PLEXUS COMPUTING COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

TOPO MIO (S Quilty) jumped awkwardly at the start.

Rounding the home turn SO SOSTENUTO (L Balding) was held up for a number of strides behind TOPO MIO (S Quilty).

Shortly after straightening WEST CENTRAL (D Sparks) shifted in and carried TOPO MIO (S Quilty) inwards which momentarily inconvenienced SO SOSTENUTO (L Balding) who was giving ground at the time.

JAMAICAN MONEY (D Pires (a)) laid in in the straight and as a result Apprentice Pires had to stop riding his mount shortly after leaving the 200m mark and switch outwards to avoid the heels of HUTTON (P Michaelides).

RACE 6 –THE BENCHMARK WINE CLUB HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

No report.

RACE 7 – THE XEROX SHOP CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for TAJAZ (P Michaelides) to race without a noseroll. A public announcement was made to this effect prior to the event.

MONAGELA (L Balding) jumped awkwardly and threw its head up shortly after the start.

A post race Veterinary inspection of MISS MOXIE revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 – SHAW CONTRACTING CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

Approaching the home turn PRINCE SALEM (M Goring) became crowded for galloping room for a number of strides between TAME A TIGER (D Pires (a)) and DEEP BENCH (S Snell) when CANWAL (K Moore), racing to the outside of DEEP BENCH, shifted in slightly away from TRUMPED STAR (K Dodge) to its outside who had shifted in marginally when tiring.
