* The Club’s doctor advised Stewards that Jockey Leah Goodrick would be unable to fulfill her riding engagements today due to illness. Stewards advised Jockey Goodrick that she is to present a medical certificate declaring her fit to ride before she resumes riding in track work, trials or races.

** Following the running of Race 1, the Club’s doctor advised Stewards that Jockey Lisa Balding would be unable to fulfill her remaining riding engagements today due to illness. Stewards advised Jockey Balding that she is to present a medical certificate declaring her fit to ride before she resumes riding in track work, trials or races.

As there was no suitable rider available at the time of declaration of riders, Trainer Ms J James was given permission to wait until race-day to allow her the opportunity to find a rider for this horse.

RACE 1 - TOTE SPORT RADIO MAIDEN PLATE – 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1600 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

Trainer Chris Crook advised Stewards that the following riding tactics would be adopted in relation to CELTIC RANGE to race this horse from a forward position and if possible try to lead on this gelding. In addition, Trainer Crook advised Stewards that BADGER’S RETREAT, her other runner in the event, would race from off the pace.

The start of this race was delayed for a short while when it was established, after loading LENNOX (M Hamilton A) into its barrier stall, that the strap on Apprentice M Hamilton’s goggles had broken. Miss Hamilton’s goggles were quickly repaired by the barrier attendants and the start was effected immediately thereafter.

DALIOCHA (S Snell) laid in throughout in the straight.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DALIOCHA (Trainer Steve Griffiths) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of CELTIC RANGE (Trainer Chris Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BADGER’S RETREAT (Trainer Chris Crook).

RACE 2 - GOODWOOD MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 1 - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

LIGHT RANK (J Borrett) and FEENISH (C Burt) brushed on a number of occasions shortly after leaving the 1000 metres mark. Thereafter at about the 900 metre mark, HELLO HEAVEN (M Hamilton A) shifted in marginally and brushed with LIGHT RANK (J Borrett) to its inside. As a result, LIGHT RANK had to be checked by its rider and lost some ground on the field. Shortly thereafter, HELLO HEAVEN (M Hamilton A) shifted outwards slightly. Simultaneously, BALLY QUI (K Sanderson) shifted in slightly, resulting in these two horses contacting.

REINOD (T McAllister) had to be momentarily steadied off heels of runners in front at about the 450 metres mark.

LIGHT RANK (J Borrett) had to be eased for a number of strides rounding the home turn when ZEQUEST (P Michaelides) shifted out. Upon inquiry it was established that ZEQUEST (P Michaelides) had switched out to avoid the heels of BALLY QUI (K Sanderson) who was starting to give ground in front and that LIGHT RANK (J Borrett) had a tendency to lay in and race very greenly. Stewards were of the view that LIGHT RANK’s behaviour had contributed to the incident but notwithstanding this fact, reminded Jockey Michaelides of his obligations when shifting ground and advised him to take far greater care in future.

LIGHT RANK (J Borrett) and ZEQUEST (P Michaelides) both laid inwards in the straight.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BALLY QUI (Trainer Chris Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 - MONTROSE MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2 - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

As HAZELHURST (Trainer Graeme McCulloch) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Stewards advised Trainer Graeme McCulloch that a warning had been placed on the gelding and that this gelding’s future behaviour would be closely monitored.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, racing in a tightly bunched field RAILTON (P Michaelides) became crowded for galloping room to the outside of JOIN THE QUEUE (C Burt) when KAQESTA (R Bradley A) shifted outwards slightly. As a result RAILTON (P Michaelides) had to be checked by its rider to avoid the heels of JOIN THE QUEUE and in consequence ALVA (T McAllister) who was following, had to be checked by its rider to avoid the heels of RAILTON. In all the circumstances, Stewards advised Apprentice Bradley, the rider of KAQESTA, that she should take far greater care when shifting ground in future and showed her the video of the incident.

STRATHMORE LUCK (M Hamilton A) laid in over the concluding stages and had to be straightened by its rider.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SCREENPLAYER (Trainer Royston Carr) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 4 - MEDIA, NEWS & SPORT CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for Jockey Ken Moore to ride ENCOSTA NOVA one kilogram over the allotted weight.

HIDDEN MOMENT (Trainer G E Blacker) was a late scratching at 1.07 pm by order of Stewards when it was established that this mare was not on course. When questioned, Trainer Mr G E Blacker stated that at no stage did any employee of the Tasmanian Racing Club advise him that his horse had gained a start. After making inquiries with the Chief Executive Officer of the Club, it was established that although the Club will make every endeavor to advise trainers of emergency runners when they gain a start, it is the Club’s view that the responsibility is with the trainer to inquire with the Club as to whether his or her runner has gained a start. It would appear that on this occasion there had been no notification either on the part of the Club or inquiry from Mr Blacker. Mr Blacker also stated that in the past he had always been advised when his horses had gained a start. Stewards noted their explanations.

ANNIFURY (Trainer L Dalco) was a late scratching at 1.38 pm by order of Stewards when there was no rider available for this mare.

JEKYLL (Trainer Chris Crook) was a late scratching at 1.40 pm by order of Stewards when there was no rider available for this gelding.

LITTLE LUCILLE (P Michaelides) blundered at the start.

Shortly after straightening, LADY QUEST (B McCoull) elected for a run to the outside of BIANCHI (C Kingston) but had to switch back in over the heels of this horse when BIANCHI shifted out slightly.

Jockey S Quilty, the rider of the winner, WEST WITH PRIDE, was dislodged shortly after the winning post. Jockey Quilty was reunited with his saddle on return to the winner’s enclosure and was weighed in as per normal procedure. Upon inspection it was established that the tree of the saddle broke on the near side which resulted in the stirrup leather becoming undone.

RACE 5 - TRIPLE T CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1600 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

CICERO (K Moore) was held up for some distance rounding the home turn and just prior to straightening.

NOT ALL OVER (D Pires A) laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race DEI GRATIA (Trainer Chris Crook).

RACE 6 - CITY OF GLENORCHY CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1200 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

WILDEST (C Burt) over-raced in the early and middle stages and thereafter approaching the 600 metres mark, threw its head up and raced ungenerously for a number of strides.

EL QUISTADOR (K Dodge) shifted in over the concluding stages and JAKE’S CHOICE shifted out resulting in these two horses making contact just prior to the winning post.

Trainer Gary White was questioned in regard to LAKE SOLVEIG’s apparent poor performance. Mr White stated that this mare had prepared well for today’s event and had shown no signs of any abnormality. He added that she may not be best suited to today’s distance of 1200 metres but given the manner in which she had finished off in her previous outing, he was confident that she would be competitive over 1200 metres. Mr White was requested to report to Stewards should he find anything amiss with this mare on her return to stable and noted his explanation.

A post-race veterinary inspection of JAKE’S CHOICE revealed that this horse had bled from both nostrils. Trainer Graeme McCulloch was advised of the provisions of AR-53A (4). JAKE’S CHOICE may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two (2) months and it may not start in any race for a period of three (3) months effective 15/09/2002, whereafter it is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

A post-race veterinary inspection of LAKE SOLVEIG (Trainer Gary White) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 7 - "THE MERCURY" CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 2100 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

Pre-race swab samples were taken from MAN IN BLACK (Trainer Chris Crook) and LAKE ARTHUR (Trainer Terry Roles).

Approaching the 1900 metre mark LAKE ARTHUR (B McCoull) shifted in slightly, as a result MAN IN BLACK (L K Dodge) and MR TRUSCOTT (C Kingston) racing to its inside, became crowded for galloping room between this horse and FOLDING NOTES (S Snell). Thereafter MAN IN BLACK had to be checked by its rider and switched out over the heels of LAKE ARTHUR. Jockey B McCoull, the rider of LAKE ARTHUR, was shown the video of the incident, issued with a reprimand [careless riding AR-137(a)] and advised to take far greater care in future when shifting ground.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MAN IN BLACK (Trainer Chris Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 - WIN TELEVISION CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1100 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

SPRINGFIELD MAN (P Michaelides) was slow away.

QUI LADY (C Kingston) and VIDEO FLYER (K Moore) brushed on a number of occasions in the early stages of the event. Thereafter QUI LADY had to be steadied off the heels of SOME CHEER (B McCoull) approaching the 600 metre mark.

Approaching the 150 metre mark QUI LADY (C Kingston) elected for a tight run between SOME CHEER (B McCoull) and VIDEO FLYER (K Moore) who had a tendency to lay in and brushed with VIDEO FLYER on a number of occasions.

GENERAL

A routine urine sample was taken from Apprentice David Pires at today’s race meeting.

Trainer Mr T M Roles advised Stewards that Trainer Mr Guy Newitt will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his runners at today’s race meeting.

Stewards heard a complaint lodged by Mrs C Burt against Mr John Luttrell in relation to an incident at the Elwick racecourse on Wednesday, 11 September 2002. After taking evidence in this matter, Stewards were unable to conclusively determine whether either of the parties had conducted themselves in a manner that could be seen to be in breach of the Rules of Racing. In the circumstances, Stewards took no direct action against either party other than to advise them to ensure that they resolve personal or private disputes in such a manner to ensure that their conduct does not infringe on the Rules of Racing.
