Hobart Cup Winner's Ideal Draw for Launceston Feature

It was a mixture of good and bad news for the connections of interstate invaders entered for the 2005 AAMI Launceston Cup after today’s official barrier draw in the Launceston City Mall.

The Tony Vasil-trained pair Under The Bridge and Bondy did well drawing barriers five and seven respectively and the Peter Moody-trained and Tasmanian-owned Highclere also drew ideally in barrier three.

However, New Zealand gelding Burning Platform, prepared by John Wheeler, fared poorly with barrier 19 and South Australian mare Dakasha will start from gate 13.

The Tony Noonan-trained Pattie Royale will start from near the middle of the field in gate nine while the Tony McEvoy-trained You Little Beaut fared better than he did in the AAMI Hobart Cup drawing barrier eight.

It is unlikely that fourth emergency Roman Thunder, from the Robert Smerdon stable, will gain a start but if he does the gelding will start from barrier one.

AAMI Hobart Cup winner Our Dashing Dane drew barrier 11 but will start from gate nine if the third and fourth emergencies (Yomee and Roman Thunder) fail to gain a start. Since 1914, barrier 11 has been the most successful gate with 12 winners, while barrier nine is third best with eight wins (behind 12 with 11).

The Keith Horobin-trained mare Wild Rapid drew barrier two and Surge Of Power, who was third in last Monday’s AAMI Hobart Cup (2100m) also fared well with barrier four.

Vasil was more than pleased with how his two candidates fared at the draw and confirmed Bondy a definite starter but the jury was still out on Launceston Cup top weight Under The Bridge, who ran second to Our Dashing Dane in the AAMI Hobart Cup.

“At the moment both horses are heading to Launceston but Under The Bridge is also nominated for the Mornington Cup next Wednesday,” Vasil said.
